Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

For me, Ghostbusters is a good mix of comedy, horror, and action, leaning more to comedy. I think thats one of the reasons why it is so good and still remembered years later.

Not all of us agree on what constitute as being serious, which is okay. When I say serious, I don't mean humorless. I think people can be serious at their job, even if they make or tell a joke, once in a while. As long as if it does not take too long, cause harm to themselves or others, or cause the mission to fail.

Before the first battle in the movie Gladiator, Russel Crowe's Maximus made a joke in his speech. "If you find yourself in a green field with the sun in your face, don't trouble yourself. For you are in Elysium and already dead." The soldiers laugh, but they were all serious about winning the war. The "doe ray egon" scene and Murray pulling the tablecloth trick took seconds, and did not and most likely would not cause any harm.

In the 2016 trailer, Kate McKinnon wore a wig and hat and waited quietly, which may have took a few minutes. She was pranking Kristen Wiig, who armed with a weapon. This like if Bill Murray purposefully moving his stream closer to others, yelling "Still not touching! Still not touching!" just to freak others out. Maybe if McKinnon and McCarthy were just investigating with PKE meters instead of on a ghost hunt, or maybe if the scene would have been funny for me, I wouldn't think it's childish horseplay.

Just to make it clear, I'm not trying to convince anyone to hate this, just explaining why this trailer disappointed me. Maybe the movie can be funny and be a good balance of comedy and horror, while this trailer just didn't do it for me.

And despite "taking the work seriously" or whatever, Ray still winds up summoning a gigantic marshmallow man who proceeds to go stomping around the western part of Manhattan.

Ray wasn't goofing off and Gozer was the one who summoned the marshmallow man.

Is the slap sillier than three dudes squirting purple ooze on someone to get a ghost out of them?

Yes. How threatning is an enemy if you can just slap them to win? Basically, almost anyone can stop them, and not with a lot of effort. The original ghostbusters have to build something to stop the enemy.

Name one smart thing Egon did that was actually shown on screen.

Egon figured out how to stop Gozer.

Ghostbusters is a fantasy comedy that happens to have high stakes at times. Probably the closest thing to that tone is Guardians of the Galaxy, although it's far more action oriented than Ghostbusters. But like Ghostbusters it's full of lovable and funny characters playing off each other and having to deal with a serious threat. They even sort of cross the streams at the end. Taking something set up as instant death and using it against the villain when all other methods fail.

The movie isn't serious because non-comedic scenes happen.

I like the reflective strips. It really makes ghostbusting seem like more of a public service job like police or firefighter. Yet they still look like something they bought off a rack at a surplus store. The originals are just Vietnam era nomex flightsuits.

Really all of the designs for the costumes and props have been great. They show a clear influence of the originals, but still look like something that a few scientists put together in their spare time with little funding. I was worried they'd have a sleek or seemingly mass produced props, like if Apple made a proton pack.

It's definitely growing on me, I had a good laugh when I saw the outfits, it's possible their outfits will get better. I had a chance to see The Real Ghostbusters series, and I loved the variations color with the outfits, I thought maybe the ladies outfits would be more colorful.

To prove pretty much every single thing you and those of a likemind are trying to disprove.
You'll have to spell it out for me.

1. Wiig's wand is holstered. 2. We have no idea the context of the scene. Just because Wiig is looking around tentatively, doesn't mean the situation is serious.

Remember when Venkman slammed a heavy book on a table while Egon was using a stethoscope on it? Yeah, fun times. ;)

What does everyone think about the ladies new GB outfits?
I like it. It's a nice update that keeps the original but modernizes it a bit to match other rescue services.

I hate the term "sheboot".

Reboots with women in formerly male roles has been done before and didn't cause the world to end!
Exactly. Sheboot is sexist and since today is international women's day (sorry you only get one day) I propose changing it back to Reboot.

Slimer is 100% scientifically accurate.
So is drilling a hole in one's head.

Aslong as there is a scene like in the first one with Ray and Winston discussing the end times and revelations, I'll be happy.

Haven't seen it mentioned here but I quite like the reworking of the theme tune. It is a nice update.

Sad to see the dislikes outweigh the likes 2:1 on the trailer on Youtube.

Ahh, that's just the Internet. Heck, it was true even before the Internet that the people who disliked something were more likely to say something than the people who liked it. After all, if you're satisfied with something the way it is, you lose nothing by staying quiet. So samples of voluntary responses like letter columns or comment sections are always going to be disproportionately skewed toward negative reactions.

The mantra of those who believe their opinion is the only one worth having.

I believe the director is on record as saying that he wrote the roles specifically for these four actresses. And it really is premature to judge anything from a few smattered lines and actions in a 90-second trailer. People today are in too much of a rush to form conclusions, to embrace vague first impressions as definitive. Understanding is a cumulative process. It takes time.
Agreed. The only conclusion I can draw is that 1. the trailer is awful, and 2. it doesn't make me want to see the film. This could be a great film that the trailer doesn't sell. I can't remember ever enjoying a film with a terrible trailer, but I suppose it can happen.

I don't see any major problems with it. Nothing is going to appeal to everyone.

Except no film has just one trailer these days. We've had two already, the teaser a couple of weeks ago and this one. I just saw a Russian-dubbed international trailer with more content, including significantly more of Chris Hemsworth's material. (And I was going to link to it, but YouTube took it down even as I was updating this post.) And with four months to go before the film comes out, we'll probably see another full trailer at some point. It's pretty typical to have a teaser and two main trailers, plus international variants, TV commercials, clips released online and on talk shows, etc. No single trailer is meant to be the entire campaign -- it's just one step in the process.

Correct on the second point. However, there are plenty of people who do have problems with it and plenty of great articles spelling out exactly what issues they have with the trailer.

Which, again, proves nothing. There's never a shortage of people on the Internet complaining about things. Reboots in particular tend to meet with a lot of skepticism. Once they come out, if they're actually good, then people forget all their complaints.
