Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

I've read a lot of people completely hated the trailer, and Sony is trying to work another trailer to put a positive light on the new movie. I look forward to seeing more Melissa in the film.

There is always another trailer... So that is the sort of statement that is it easy to prove...

I think Angry Joe says pretty much what I feel, minus maybe some his more extreme views and rhetoric (but that's kind of "his thing.") The movie seems too manufactured and "light."

The first movie had a tone of darkness and "reality" to it, you believed these characters could do what they were doing and the movie felt like it took place in the real world. This movie plays to a more comedic level, the characters and interactions don't feel "real" it feels all set-up for a comedic thing. Just a different tone, and not one I'm sold on yet.

ETA: take the slapping scene at the end. The basic gag - the slap expels the ghost, but the slapper doesn't realize it, so she slaps again - is promising. A clever way to visualize that would have been to show the ghost get slapped downwards, right through the floor and into the room below. Cut to McCarthy moaning, which Jones misinterprets, so she slaps again. Funny. Not funny, however, is what we get: a distracting cut to outside the building, with a hugely obvious "the ghost is leaving leaving" effect, followed by McCarthy saying an obviously non-possessed, cliched "that's gonna hurt" line, followed by Jones slapping again.

Yeah, it was just a very, very, broad slap-sticky scene. Especially with the over-the-top character screaming clichés and yeah, the "ow, that's going to leave a mark," line. Really?! That's the most overused, basic, line you can put there. And they did it. It's that scene that's kind of indicative to me of the type of "humor" in the movie, compared to the "drier" humor in the original movie. "The power of [whatever] compels you!!!" Ugh.

Kate McKinnon's character looks fun from some of the shots of her in the movie, but then they have the dumb one of her wearing the wig behind a shelf or something while they're on a job. Yeah, they're in the middle of this job, in a serious situation, and this woman decides to go and grab this wig and place herself behind a shelf to surprise/scare her friend/co-worker.

Just seems like an odd direction of humor to go with to make the movie take place in less of a reality and more of just in a cartoonish movie reality.

Ohh, they shouldn't think that way. There are always going to be fans who hate anything. Studios can't let it scare them into second-guessing their decisions. It's impossible to satisfy everyone, and trying to do so will only water down or compromise your creative vision.

Indeed, I tend to find that the more intensely some people love a thing, the more intensely others will hate it, and vice versa. The only way to offend no one is to delight no one, to produce something bland and middle-of-the-road. Anything worthwhile is going to attract haters, and they're always going to shout louder than everyone else, so you have to take that into account and not panic just because you got a negative reaction from some people.

As opposed to the cartoonishness of Slimer? ;)

The original films has some funny, cartoonish ghosts, but also many creepy, scary ones. Here, few look a little creepy, but the bright, neon blue light on ALL of them made them cartoony for me.

Yeah, I read that too. I agree with Angry Joe as well. Kate McKinnon's character goofing off came of childish. The originals took their job seriously. Their inexperience in their first case (with Slimer) made it funny.
It looks like they are trying to make it too kid friendly, like a live action cartoon. Again, I really hope the movie is better than the trailer.

I don't see any difference from how Peter Venkman acted. He wasn't taking any of it seriously. Heck, his "paranormal research" in the first act was just an excuse to seduce coeds and administer electric shocks to male students. He was a slacker while Egon and Ray did the bulk of the serious work.

As I believe I remarked, Holtzmann's behavior in the trailer strikes me as a cross between Peter's wry, humorous take on everything and Ray's cheerful enthusiasm about everything. She's having fun, but that doesn't mean she doesn't care about the work -- on the contrary, she really seems to be into it.

Yeah, her McKinnon's character is almost the most believable to me, trying to have fun in the serious situation. I know more people like this than not.

Or are people purposely forgetting "And the flowers are still standing" from the original? She has Venkman's professional attitude all over her.

Honestly, it's exactly the kind of humour I was expecting when the director was announced. It's what he does. It's not just a broad style, but a lot more heavy-handed, not very subtle. And that's not going to win everyone over.

when it comes to the original film i think some people have their nostalgia goggles on a little too tight. i certainly wouldn't describe it as having a tone of 'darkness and reality'. it was a comedy. it had wacky things in it.

As a teaser trailer that would be great but an official trailer needs to show dialogue being spoke and more background of the characters being introduced.

Typically but there have them some classics that did not. Granted this example is pretty old:

The argument that the originals took their jobs seriously makes little sense. Ray and Egon maybe took their jobs seriously, but anyone who thinks Peter or Winston did must have watched a different movie.

God knows how many people have seen this trailer. The amount of people actually going all butthurt about this is quite small compared to the amount of people not butthurting. And Sony still feels the need the respond like that??

That says a little bit too much about the power of whiny fanboys really. :(

This is the same dumb thing that "fan reedits" usually do, ie "If I make this look and sound more like that thing I already know I like, then I've improved it."

Mom's macaroni and cheese - it satisfies. Mind you, it wasn't really good for you back when it was turning you into a little beach ball of a 5th grader and it's destroying your circulatory system now, but it's comforting anyway.

You mean like using Sabotage for the Star Trek Beyond trailer? ;) I just like how it all comes together, I wasn't really thinking about it sounding familiar.

I'd say that Ray took it seriously to an absurd degree. Egon was so focused on the science that nothing he does could be considered normal human behavior. Remember that both slept with mood slime in the name of science.

Yeah, Ray was really the only true believer in what they were doing. Egon was fascinated with psuedo-science, and their job allowed him even greater access to it all; I can't even imagine how anyone wouldn't think he wasn't taking it seriously. Winston didn't believe any of it at first and thought it was just a cushy job, but once shit started getting real, he was a lot closer to Ray's point of view than Venkman's.

Of the four of them, Venkman was the only one who didn't take any of it seriously, and was just along for the ride.

I dunno about some of you, but in the world I live in, 3/4 is bigger than 1/4.

As for the tone of the original movie, it was actually pretty serious. The rest of the world, including the vast majority of the ghosts, were "straight men" for lack of a better term. Heck, even the librarian ghost was far and away more serious (and scary) than the silly slapstick that we see in the trailer.

Yeah Ray and Egon did take everything seriously, but hey Ray could have fun with it when he wanted to. At least when it comes to his dream lady ghost!

What did McKinnon do that was childish? Wear a funny hat and wig? She seems to be taking things about as seriously as Venkman did. (ie: Hardly at all.)

Yeah Ray and Egon did take everything seriously
Doe. Ray. Egonnnn! ;)
