George Lucas

I've read that that he doesn't read them but they run the summaries by him so he can veto it or not. I believe it was his decision to kill Anakin Solo to prevent reader confusion with Anakin Skywalker (since the Clone Wars books were coming out then). I believe it was also his idea to kill Chewie in Vector Prime but I may be wrong. I think he's also said that "Dark Empire" was closer to what he would have done with the sequels than any of the books in the 90s.

With regards to Chewie's unfortunate demise, Del Ray went to Lucas asking permission to kill Luke, and Lucas obviously said no. Instead he gave them a list of movie characters they were allowed to kill, and Chewie was on it.

Really? I never heard that before! They wanted to kill LUKE?! Man. I would not have been happy with that. Luke is my favorite EU character by a long stretch. Han and Leia are alright but I really don't care about Jaina. Ben is interesting but only in relation to Luke.

The only thing that I've ever read about Lucas on the EU is that he has as mentioned above veto power on what the editors can and can't do. Killing Luke would have created a major backlash from EU and regular Star Wars at that time, now that we know he does die at some point thanks to the force ghost in Legacy...it might not be such a big blow to fans.

Luke's demise was planned so that the Jedi introduced in The New Jedi Order would have room to grow into the heroes of the series, something that would be hindered by having an uber-powerful and experienced Jedi master around. Instead of dying we had indecisive Luke, which damaged his character in my opinion.

And those mourning the demise of Anakin Solo should also know that Jacen was originally going to play his role in the NJO, with Anakin being undecisive until the very end of the series. Jacen would have bit the dust too. So perhaps Anakin dying isnt so bad, at least he went out a hero instead of turning into Sith-lite.

Yeah I wasn't happy with Luke's indecisiveness in NJO. And LOTF for that matter. But he's still my favorite character... my Yoda... my Dumbledore... my Gandalf. It's ridiculous when you look at the war hero Jedi from the Clone Wars... and then you read NJO where Luke refuses to actually FIGHT the villains killing billions of people because it might turn them to the dark side. Puh-leez.

If you think about it Luke is scared of the Dark Side...his refusal to do anything that might lead to that path, the path of his father, is too much of a risk for him to take. I agree that Luke in recent time has been incredibly indecisive, it might also have to do with the creation of the new Jedi Council and having more voices added to the mix instead of the authority of his like back in the Jedi Academy days. The Jedi continue to repeat the mistakes they made before...and the Sith are waiting.

Which is annoying since Luke went to the dark side for a protracted period and came back stronger than ever! Not to mention this is the boy who murdered millions of people on the Death Star including women, children, doctors, bartenders, custodians, contract construction crews...

I don't remember seeing any women or children on the Death Star.

And those civilian workers...they knew what they were getting into... :shifty:

The novel "Death Star" is all about all the nice innocent people including slaves and prisoners who were living on the Death Star when Luke brutally snuffed out their sweet innocent lives like a monster. MURDERER!!!

Lucas reads the summaries for the novels and approves them. He also wrote the introduction to the paperback version of "Shatterpoint" as well as sitting down with author Matthew Stover when Stover was writing the novel of RotS and editing it line by line with him. Stover said he was pretty awesome to work with for what it is worth.

Lucas, from a few years back:

"I am the father of our Star Wars movie world – the filmed entertainment, the features and now the animated film and television series, and I’m going to do a live-action television series. Those are all things I am very involved in: I set them up and I train the people and I go through them all. I’m the father; that’s my work. Then we have the licensing group, which does the games, toys and books, and all that other stuff. I call that the son — and the son does pretty much what he wants." He laughs. "Once in a while, they ask a question like ‘Can we kill off Yoda?’, things like that, but it’s very loose.
Then we have the third group, the holy ghost, which is the bloggers and fans. They have created their own world. I worry about the father’s world. The son and holy ghost can go their own way."
I more recently read an interview with Lucas where he states he would have never taken the post-ROTJ story in the direction that Zahn and subsequent authors did. I thought I had bookmarked the quote, but I can't find it now.

EDIT: Found it. In an SFX interview:

I've left pretty explicit instructions for ther not to be any more features. No Episodes VII - IX, because there isn't any story. I mean, I never thought of anything! There have been novels about the events after Episode VI, which aren't at all what I would have done. The story is the tragedy of Darth Vader. That's the story. Once he dies, he doesn't come back to life, the Emperor doesn't get cloned, Luke doesn't get married.
