George Lucas on a Fifth Indiana Jones

George Lucas on a Fifth Indiana Jones
Source: The Sunday
July 28, 2008

With Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull having earned a massive $743.7 million worldwide (#27 on the all-time worldwide list), The Sunday Times asked George Lucas if he, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford would be up for a fifth film:

"We were hoping for box-office figures like that, which is, ultimately, with inflation, what the others have done, within 10%," Lucas explains. "So, we squeaked up there. Really, though, it was a challenge getting the story together and getting everybody to agree on it. Indiana Jones only becomes complicated when you have another two people saying 'I want it this way' and 'I want it that way', whereas, when I first did Jones, I just said, 'We'll do it this way' — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it's a little hard on a practical level.

"If I can come up with another idea that they like, we'll do another. Really, with the last one, Steven wasn't that enthusiastic. I was trying to persuade him. But now Steve is more amenable to doing another one. Yet we still have the issues about the direction we'd like to take. I'm in the future; Steven's in the past. He's trying to drag it back to the way they were, I'm trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that. It's kind of a hybrid of our own two ideas, so we'll see where we are able to take the next one."

Ah that explains KOTCS

Does Lucas remember that the old school way the first 3 movies were part of its charm ,and adding CGI and aliens just doesn't fit the Indy franchise?

If they do a fifth, Lucas should just keep quiet and let Spielberg do all the thinking.

Odd...Spielberg seemed plenty enthusiastic about Indy 4 as far as I knew...

After seeing Indy 4, it's obvious to me why Spielberg and Ford were against the idea Lucas had for so damn long. I guess they made the movie when they finally had a half-decent script and decided to run with it.

IF they make a fifth (and I am doubting they will), Lucas just needs to shut the hell up and let the series go back to its roots instead of pushing it to different places.

George Lucas is what happens when you become so powerful there's no one to check and balance you. It's like when Sylvester Stallone was at his peak and would get no-name directors he could boss around for his movies.

I think it'll be Indiana Jones and the Jedi Temple where Indiana happens to find a saucer shaped ship from a galaxy far far away and discovers that he is fact a clone of the charming rogue who was its captain.

The 4th Movie was so badly received by critics and and fans that it started it's own phrase for when a movie franchise starts to go downhill. A phrase very similar to "Jumping The Shark". "Nuking The Fridge".

Agreed, whatever they'll put on screen, it won't measure to the original trilogy.

Or maybe just here on TrekBBS :D

I respect what Lucas has done in his career. He has changed movie making forever for the better. But I do think that the point is long over due that he leaves the story elements to other people..

I was going to say. If that's what happens when a film is 'badly received' then no wonder the film companies keep rolling them out.

Yes, thankfully for the companies, the fans and critics are a small portion of the movie going public.

In a nutshell, Lucas wanted to do the Crystal Skulls for the 4th movie since the early 90s, but Spielberg was keen on that idea. After numerous adjustments, revisions, and discussions over the years, Spielberg started to like the story that was developing around the skulls and fully embraced it and really began to enjoy where the 4th film was going.

Badly received? Reality check time. It got a 76% over at Rotten Tomatoes...that is not "badly received" and is a higher ranking than other "better received" movies this summer such as Incredible Hulk.

This is the second time I've heard anyone use that phrase.

The Fonz isn't in any danger of losing his crown.

Oh yeah:

Shit Newsweek even did a story on "Nuking The Fridge".

Wow. Lucas has a whole new franchise to frak up. :wtf:

Nice to see he's keeping busy.

I think we'd be lucky to get something half that fun!

I'm looking forward to the day that we find out the sword-wielding Arab in the marketplace actually shot at Indy first. :p

I just don't see why they didn't:

1-send Indy after Excalibur

2-have Indy find Atlantis

3-have Indy find Bigfoot

\S/

I loved Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls, but I only want another film if all three agree on it. I also hope Lucas will be more willing to give some ground to Spielberg this time since it's clear Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls was more of his thing. I understand wanting to go in different directions (and I liked the direction Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls went), but Lucas needs to be willing to go where Spielberg wants to.

I don't know if you're being facetious or not, but Indy went after Atlantis in a popular and successful video game already. Bigfoot isn’t an artifact in the way that the previous McGuffins have been. Excalibur is a possibility, although Last Crusade already delved into Arthurian mythology already, and Stargate SG-1 has lately done the subject to death.
