Genesis Wave...yay or nay???

I just got all three Genesis Wave books as well as Genesis Force for really cheap...just wondering the general consensus is? Are they any good? The only other John Vornholt book i've read is Sanctuary and it wasn't bad.:)

I read the first one, (well, listened to the audiobook) and found it lacking. Way too much Megadeath and worldwide destruction for me to take it seriously.

Don't know that there's a consensus one way or another, but it gets a pretty firm "nay" from me. The books aren't really bad, so much as they're boring and sort of tedious. They just keep going and going with very little plot and zero character development. Throw in a bit of continuity porn, and you've got the Genesis Wave books. Worth a read if you've got extra time on your hands, but don't be expecting a "Destiny" level experience. For that matter, don't expect a "Spirit Walk" level experience.

I really liked the first one, thought the second one was a step down though still enjoyable, hated the confused and seemingly unrelated third book, and enjoyed the first parts of the fourth book but felt it went seriously downhill after the wave hit and Worf showed up.

For that matter, don't expect a "Spirit Walk" level experience.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I really sort of felt like the series could have stopped with the second book myself. They weren't bad, but Book Three and Genesis Force felt more like spinoff stories dealing with the fallout from the first two books. I just felt you got the main story during the first half of Genesis Wave....

what do you mean by "continuity porn"?

what do you mean by "continuity porn"?

The term refers to fiction that overindulges in making references to characters and elements from existing series continuity, doing sequels or crossovers, exploring how events or elements from different episodes or shows tie together, explaining contradictions between them, etc. Some have used the term to refer to things like, say, The Eugenics Wars throwing in cameos by virtually every 20th-century character ever established in Trek.

I concur Trent. :bolian:

Similar feelings. Really enjoyed the first one. The sequel was good, but a bit of a downer. The third book had the best cover but the contents were very disappointing.

Total opposite for me. I really disliked "Genesis Force". Some Starfleet characters were interesting, but I had no interest in the two young people on the doomed planet, and I didn't start enjoying things until Worf and Alexander showed up halfway through.

Liked the first two, didn't care for the third one. Fourth one was somewhere between the first pair and the third book but don't remember which way it leaned at this point.

I liked the first one, but felt the second book didn't properly pay off on what the first book established.

The third book just left me scratching my head and wondering, "Why?"

The final book was a distinct improvement over the previous two.

Thanks everyone. The general consensus says the first book is the best, so i'll definitely give it a try and go from there:bolian:. Any thoughts on the Maximum Warp duology (or should I start another thread for discussion on them?)

Well, the first book is only half the core story. If you want to see how the story ends, you need the second too.
