I expect assimilation was voluntary until they assimilated some bad apples that influenced them to their current expansion policy. That could happen at any point in their history, whenever makes the most sense.

I see, so maybe the Klingons capture the Maru and forced it over the border is what you're saying. Well, even less of a reason to go after it then! The crew would likely be dead anyway, or about to be slaughtered.

I think I that what you do might depend on what career path you wind up on. A person who plays it safe will get an administrative post. A person who risks going in will be more likely to get a command. And Mr./Ms. "Blow them up yourself" might get invited to join Section 31.
In Psych 101's "The Trolley Question" I run over the 5 people then back up so I can get the other guy, too...
