General Trek Questions and Observations

I expect assimilation was voluntary until they assimilated some bad apples that influenced them to their current expansion policy. That could happen at any point in their history, whenever makes the most sense.

This is an interesting idea.

Maybe they literally bit off more than they could chew and assimilated a species that infected them this expansionist crusade towards 'perfection'. Previously, perhaps they were far more 'patient' and expanded very slowly.

okay so this might seem a little random, but i have a question...
...How, Would you handle the Kobayashi Maru?
only rule is you cant use an existing strategy. (and you have the technological capacities of the enterprise ncc-1701)
just as a recap: you receive a distress call from the kobayashi maru, which is surrounded by Klingons.
what do you do?

Start another argument on a Trek Forum,

Probably go on my merry way, and get relegated to an administrative position on a remote Starfleet supply base as a result.

We can't all be brave...

Assess the options, realize it's a no-win scenario, forward the distress signal to Starfleet, then tactically retreat, saving my crew to live another day and report on the fate of the Kobayashi to the victims' families.

Just what in the hell is the Kobayashi Maru doing in the Klingon Neutral Zone in the first place? That's like ignoring all the warning signs, driving across the North Korean border, somehow evading the minefield, and being surprised when the North Koreans start shooting at you. Some navigational error.

They must have been warned, and would have had adequate opportunities to change course or issue a distress signal if their ship had failed, and/or escape in escape pods. They seemed to be under their own power though. I bet they were trying to cut corners to deliver their cargo more quickly.

They plotted their route, they ignored the warnings. They knew what they were getting in to
I say, let them get smashed.

A question the Enterprise captain would have done well to ask before heading right into the Klingon trap. :shifty:

Kor

I see, so maybe the Klingons capture the Maru and forced it over the border is what you're saying. Well, even less of a reason to go after it then! The crew would likely be dead anyway, or about to be slaughtered.

It's a trap ! Blow them up and high tail it out of there...

They were goners anyway, and you might just get some Klingon street cred in the process :klingon:

That's what I was thinking. Or maybe the Kobayashi Maru was never actually there at all, and the distress signal was faked by the Klingons. Enterprise never actually confirmed the ship's location (or existence) on long-range sensors before Saavik charged in, and they never got a visual either. Of course, in case Saavik had bothered to order a scan, the Klingons could have been prepared for that with a probe in the Zone giving off false readings for the sensors, and also being used as a relay point for the distress signal. So then by the time the Big E got close enough for visual confirmation, it was too late and the Klingon ships had arrived.

You're twisted. I like you.

I think that what you do might influence what career path you wind up on. A person who plays it safe will get an administrative post. A person who risks going in will be more likely to get a command. And Mr./Ms. "Blow them up yourself" might get invited to join Section 31.

I think I that what you do might depend on what career path you wind up on. A person who plays it safe will get an administrative post. A person who risks going in will be more likely to get a command. And Mr./Ms. "Blow them up yourself" might get invited to join Section 31.

Ha ! I like option three !

In Psych 101's "The Trolley Question" I run over the 5 people then back up so I can get the other guy, too...

Unwinnable hypotheticals make me grouchy.

Could escalate further, decided not to.

Because the scenario is unwinnable, it strictly tests character, right? Ergo, I would think that it would influence your future in Starfleet. Possibly very profoundly...

I have an idea:

Is that a railroad hammer in your hand? If so, bonus points for poetic justice.
