I liked the hand drawn art in Archer's quarters of the "Enterprise" ships. As for Spock's mother, I think Jane Wyatt had much more class and really did a fine job for the role.
He most certainly did! It was his idea to link up a "Reed Alert" (that's what Tripp called it - lol) to the weapons to activate before any attack and give Enterprise a chance to fire back or first when there was an attack about to happen.Reed had more experience than farmboy nuKirk,
So did Lt. nuSulu, Lt. nuUhura, all the other commissioned officers aboard the ship prior to the assignment of the cadets, any fourth year cadet on the ship.Reed had more experience than farmboy nuKirk,

And any pets on the ship.
It's a homo-sapiens only club.Why didn't they make Spock the captain
So I watched the original series in reruns when I was a kid, liked it but never became a fanatic. Then watched some of TNG when I was in college but wasn't a can't miss an episode kind of guy after all I had a life to live. So a few months ago I decide I'm going to watch as much Trek as I can while sitting in front of my computer getting things done. Thought I'd share my thoughts about what I've seen so far.
Deepspace 9: Amazing, easily the best Trek since the original. I found myself caring for the characters and wanting the best for them. I liked the stories and though some were schlock many were amazing and the acting was startlingly deep for a Trek show. I hated the alternate universe bit but lived with it. Character progression felt right, and the addition of Worf was great and the death of Jadziah sucked balls especially when I read that they (the directors) got rid of her out of spite (at least that's what I read, that she wanted a bit more free time).
As I said DS9 was easily the best Trek for me so far, all the characters from the doctor to the chief were well written, well acted and deep. I found myself liking the Ferengi, they weren't as big a bunch of A Holes as I though, the Klingons were enjoyable and likable as well. Andrew Robinson as Garak was freaking amazing, just the look in eyes when they got big told the tale. The show really redeemed a lot of the races I didn't have high regard for and Benjamin Sisko is a bad ass Captain, I think second only to Kirk when it comes to baddassery.
Enterprise: Not as bad as many say, the openeing music was ok and I kind of grew to like it. The show felt like it was about 2 characters and everyone else just happened to be there. The Captain was ok, not a bad fellow and I liked how he became a grizzled war vet by the end of the series. I thought Bakula did a good job of showing how the stress of command and all those close calls gave him a severe case of PTSD which they could have introduced into the show but they just danced around how the Captain was acting in the last season.
I really felt like the writers left a lot on the table with the other characters. Dr. Phlox was great, very interesting character but we enever really got to explore his homeworkd much. T'pol was on the screen all the time, Captain archer and T'pol were the primary characters and that never seemed to change to much. It was an ok show with good acting by most accept T'pol whom Jolene Blalock played with far to many emotions showing. If I watched the series of over again I'd see if they had her show more emotions after she was mind melded against her will and that's why she's so emotional or if she just played the character that way.
Lastly Shran the Andorian was the best character, the episodes he was in were almost always the best ones in the series. Great acting, Great writing....
Voyager: I'm half way through this mess......worst Trek ever. The Captain isn't a warship Captain she has the reactions of a garbage scow Captain. Every enemy in the Delta quadrant gets the drop on her and the shields are at 50% before she realizes she might want to shoot back. We're taking fire Captain Janeway! Boom boom, evasive pattern Omega3 (its good for your heart!) boom boom, shields at 50%....then Janeway snaps out of her coma, stand up, adjusts her uniform and slowly asks someone to fire phasers.
It freaking drives me nuts, I hate this Captain, no you sexist pig not because she's a woman, because she doesn't belong in that chair and half the crew knows she's in over her head. Let's travel in a convoy for safety Janeway....nooooo she doesn't need a convoy. Let's not be so trusting, we are alone and so far everyone we meet wants to eat us, absorb us, clone us, or enslave us....noooooo that's not the Federation way.
So far Janeway is the only Captain I'd mutiny against, the freaking hollow Doctor would do a better job.
I'm struggling through the series and already see that Harry Kim is the universes bitch, Tom Paris will hook up with anything that has a heart beat on board, the Doctor is the best character on the ship, Chakotay has his name over pronounced and hates his job, Neelix is the comic relief, Kess is a cutey who is quite talented, and Tuvak is the most Vulcan of Vulcans and Bealana Torres was introduced as a bad ass Klingon but was really a nerd in disguise, at least that character was a different kind of Klingon with more smarts but still fiery.
I'm thinking of self harm if I go back to the death March that is Voyager but I must press on. I've begun breaking it up with episodes of "The IT crowd" from the BBC even though I've seen each one till I can say the lines along with the actors at least I laugh a bit.
Well that's my 10 cents, My opinion and a quarter might get ya a cup of coffee. I'll keep you all up on my Voyager death march, I'm still not to the sexy cyborg chick thrown in to save the show but I'll get their.
Liked your reviews of each series. Especially the Enterprise review. I think Shran made a damn good General. What did you think of Cmdr. Tucker, Lt. Reed, Ensign Sato & Ensign Mayweather? I think that the fact that this show kind of showed where some of the new devices came from (stun added to phaser, Red Alert with auto weapons turned on) and even showing how Section 31 was involved was fairly good. They could have done so much more with the show after that "Xindi" thing!!! Just wish they didn't kill off Cmdr. Tucker (he was the only original crew member to die).
Yes, I believe that since Vulcans did not have full control in her time, T'Pol was a very good exception to the rule. You mention Jolene being too emotional - as the show went on, I came to appreciate that. My view on what they were doing, was showing that the pure emotionless Vulcan philosophy wasn't quite yet fully formed. Or that maybe not every Vulcan subscribed to it. T'Pol believed in applying logic, but still allowed herself to feel and react emotionally, just a little. I was pleasantly surprised by Jolene - when the show began I assumed she was just there for the adolescent male eye candy, but I think she really gave us a good character to care about.
Ok so I've watched more Voyager....(SPOILER ALERT)........go away if you haven't watched it all and don't want to know.
Totally agree on Capt Janeway character but wasn't Capt. Archer the same way (until he got his butt kicked a few times)? When are writers going to understand that not everyone in Space is friendly like ET? If you saw ALIEN, you know what I mean and there is a new movie sequel to ALIEN coming out soon (and they look even more vicious!)
So Kess is gone......that sucks butt. Loved the character and the idea of the race, good acting and writing for her (for the most part).
The Sex robot is onboard now, Kim is an idiot for not taking her up on her offer. If I were 20ish again and not married I'd hit that like a base drum all day long. The character though not rediculous is written ridiculously. How about a normal Starfleet uniform or clothes and real women do have a waist so a corset? Really? I mean the guy in me says he'll yea! But the realist in me thinks it cheapens the character.
I've learned to utterly ignore Janeway, that's how I enjoy Voyager. Yes I put up with how she's written and interferes in what might have been a great character but the writers ruined it and her inflections are.....well they are like what a woman thinks a man acts like but with a once in a while female facial expression. She represents all the hallmarks of the worst kind officer, energetic yet dumb and that's the kind of leader that gets people killed.
Neelix seems to have hugely reduced screen time...kinda of a bummer.
While putting up with Chakotays name being over pronounced I still like the character. The episodes he's in a lot tend to be ok.
Kim is still the universes bitch and the oldest virgin in the Delta quadrant.
Paris and Belana are a thing...finally after 3 seasons of hinting about.
Tuvak is Tuvak....the anchor....the unchangingly written statue since episode one.
I'm sure I've missed some but I'm learning to live around Janeway (still hasn't joined a convoy) (still thinks running in to give hugs and warm welcomes to all species is a good idea). Overall it's getting better not based on actually getting better but based on how I've learned to watch it.
I did find that episode and story arc incredibly interesting. Actually it managed to shock me a bit but it added to the war weary ptsd of the Captain even more. You will like this part of the series.Oh boy! Just watched the first epi of Xindi attack on Earth! (the Expanse)? I missed a few of these earlier on but now I'm not going to miss one part! Really felt bad for Tucker losing his little sis like that. I wanted to see it all so I can get a better idea of how this affects(affected?) the whole series. So far, so good.
Thanks much. I will be watching tonight to see what happens next!I did find that episode and story arc incredibly interesting. Actually it managed to shock me a bit but it added to the war weary ptsd of the Captain even more. You will like this part of the series.
