General Trek Questions and Observations

Is it really possible to build your own spaceworthy ship with some centuries-old plans like the Bajoran lightship?

As the Bajorans probably don't really exist, their centuries-old plans for lightships don't either, so that would be a 'no'.

^ Then, imho, it's not much use asking if something is 'really possible' within that fictional universe either. I see far more implausible stuff happen in eps, and as we see it done, I'm strongly inclined to believe it is possible (in the fictional star trek universe). Though I wouldn't be surprised if 'the Sisko' cheated a little by using some advanced replication techs and perhaps some other tools the ancient Bajorans wouldn't have had.

We know he did. Sisko added artificial gravity.

True, but I meant, in migitating the difficulties of actually manufacturing the ship. For example use of an (industrial) replicator for some parts probably would have made the process a whole lot easier. Or perhaps some of those self-sealing stembolts :) (probably not, as it was intended to be an exact replica).

All parts had to be replicated, or this off-hours hobby would have required a leave of absence for several years.

The way the whole lightship project was presented in the episode made it seem about as simple as making your own raft or canoe, like you could just put together a working spacecraft in your garage. The parallels to Kon-Tiki were obvious, of course.

^True, and I apologise if I came across snarly.

This is the 24th century, and humanity has a lot more experience with spacetravel and constructing vessels and pods than today. Perhaps tools and materials have advanced to the point that building a basic survival pod (and attaching light sails) for space isn't really that hard anymore.

And of course, Sisko is a captain in Starfleet, which might mean he has easier access to both the required knowledge and the required materials and tools for the job than your average joe.

I assumed that the Bajorans built their lightships by hand, and that's why it was easy for Sisko to do it as well.

Remember, the lightship is a centuries-old (perhaps millennia-old) design by the time DS9 came along. Even if the Bajorans ever had replicator technology, the lightship surely came way before it.

This is a sort of weekend hobby. I don't think we are meant to believe that all these complex pieces are made by Sisko by hand. He's doing some by hand, like joining the big pieces together, but those big pieces must have been replicated. Sisko already has a job, and serious responsibilities.

Like a modular home, or a model airplane kit. I imagine the Bajorans might have such things, particularly if it's an important part of their (unproven until Sisko) history. Except most people would just display theirs. Maybe he custom-ordered a larger version of the typical tabletop model.

In the Voyager episode Tatoo, the native tribe that Chakotay and his father visited in South America (or was it Central America). They were called The Rubber Tree people. Didn't they have bumpy foreheads? Or at least some kind of ridge on the their foreheads. So were they saying this one tribe had some alien DNA or did they practice some kind of self mutilation to honor their gods?

Yes, there was genetic manipulation by the aliens ages ago. http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Rubber_Tree_People

Does anyone noticed any trends in the names chosen for Human characters in various series? I have the impression that TOS chose first and last name pairings for minor characters that were multicultural more often (first from one culture, last from another), or that more dignified/aristocratic sounding names were given to characters in those days. Whereas TNG did a bit of that early on but shelved it.

Am I off-base/missing something?

Should this not be in the General questions thread? I thought that thread was created for such small and insignificant questions like this. Am I right @1001001 and @The Old Mixer?
