General Trek Questions and Observations

^ Holographic water?

Holodecks don't work like that - water is only holographic up to the point it interacts with a physical object, at which point the holodeck replicates actual water. Hence why Wesley got soaked (and stayed soaked after leaving the holodeck) in Encounter At Farpoint.

I wonder whether or not a bond Vulcan style, or an extremely strong link can be perceived by the other party across say, Mirror universe to “”ours””

Greetings People of Goodwill!

I’m new here and first watched TOS as a kid during its original run in the 1960s.

What does BBS mean?

Is there an introduction somewhere to trekbbs.com? Something like, “this forum was launched in the year such-and-such in order to bring together Star Trek fans so that...”

^i always thought it was BeyondBullShit, but it's something less funny, It's Bulletin Board System.

Thank you. Is there an “About Us” post or thread? An introduction to what this BBS is about? I can’t seem to find the main welcome page.

Welcome aboard. BBS means "Bulletin Board System," a name inherited from the online discussion boards that you had to dial directly into over your phone line way back in the 1980s before the world wide web got big and websites like this even existed.

For an idea of how things work around here, you could start with the "Announcements" forum, and specifically the board rules thread: https://www.trekbbs.com/rules/

Thank you Kor. The rules you refer to could apply to any forum. I’m looking for a specific “Mission Statement” about this site.

I can’t find an introductory page that says something like “Welcome to the world of Star Trek. This discussion board is a great place for fellow Trekkers to exchange ideas and information about Star Trek.” Where is such a page? Thanks a heap, man!

It's fairly self-explanatory. It's a discussion board about Star Trek. For discussing things that are Star Trek related/adjacent. In fact, you seem to have figured that bit out with your post.

The subforums have more specific subheadings as to what belongs in each.

I choose to believe when Scotty said "Captain James T. Kirk must have sent you to rescue me" he wasn't addled.

No, he believed Captain Kirk would GENUINELY come back from the dead.

And he did!
Kirk dying in Generations was an alternate timeline created when Picard went back in time in First Contact...

Scotty came back from the dead before, no reason to think Kirk couldn't pull it off.

Why didn't the central triad in TOS represent the three devisions? Especially since the uniforms were so colourful in the first place in order to promote colour TVs.
Why not make the central characters a gold, blue and redshirt instead of one gold and two blueshirts?

The big three were usually accompanied by other crewmen wearing red shirts. So the full gamut of uniform colors was still represented on screen.

Also, McCoy wasn't planned to be part of any "triad" (he was just credited as another co-star until Season 2), and Spock became more of a breakout character than originally intended. It was intended to be leading man Kirk (or Pike or April or Winters) with a collection of rotating crewmates and guest stars.

Probably Yeoman Rand, with her redshirt, was intended to be the primary representative of that primary colour.

Our first color TV console circa 1966 had poor reception through the rabbit ear antenna (with custom foil extensions) making it lucky to distinguish a desaturated color on the blurry, ghost-like figures. Ah, the good old days.

After Scotty's seventy five years of nothingness a simple memory lapse about Kirk was very understandable I'd say! That's my reasoning and I'm sticking with it!

Kruge's story in THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK is actually at tragic and horrifying tale of a well-intentioned investigator. The Genesis Weapon has already been nearly stolen by a mad human to wipe out whole civilizations and was created with illegal technology. He kills his own friend because the genocide weapon is that dangerous, he then has a subordinate commit an act of war on the Federation so he has to bring back proof or his men are outlaws, he kills Kirk's son who dies for Saavik [and thus gets a warrior's death], and he gets his own crew killed.

When Kruge is facing Kirk, he's fully prepared to die there and believes, "Yeah, I have it coming."

Barkley experienced his time in a slower transport, I say Scotty personally experiance every second of those seventy-five years. It's a wonder Scotty could remember his own name.
