General thoughts on ENT?

Every once in a while, a Trip hater pops up to say how much they like TATV. Hardly anyone talks about Horizon, in a positive or negative way.
So do you have to be a "Trip hatet " to love TATV.? I wasn't around for the original run.
As for Horizon, I thought it was a fine enough episode. They were definitely worse episodes. There were some good moments in there. I think that, for me, the episode was supposed to be Travis-centric. But the actor was just too weak to carry the episode. Don't get me wrong. I like the character ( and the actor ) just fine. He was just best in small doses where his acting "deficiencies " wrent as obvious.

I'm not a Trip-hater, by any stretch of the imagination. He did, after all, win the love of The Ultimate Ice Queen ... not an easy task! And yet? I'm a hardcore fan of "These Are the Voyages." It's got everything!

That's a large part of it's appeal, of course ... Jonathan Frakes is right up there with The Greats of this franchise! But there's more to it, than that. For instance, the Archer and T'Pol scenes are all very strong, in this episode. When they're going through Trip's things, though, he has the temerity to get on his soapbox and deliver a speech about it all being worthwhile. I could've done without that.

But later on, when they're on Earth and he gives her a hug, that's the kind of Fan Service I like. Where its implications are subtle. When they throw a tribble in a scene, it's so obvious and vulgar. But something like that hug really tells you something, specifically, about how far they've come. It's not the only moment like that in TATV, but that's part of the appeal of the show for me ... most definitely.

You're in the minority. In the TATV threads, most of the people who liked it were Trip haters. There are not many of them but they complain the loudest.

Maybe it's not that you were a Trip HATER as much as a Riker LOVER! :guffaw:

I suppose if I was enamoured with Riker/Frakes, I might have enjoyed it more. As it is, I was never much of a Riker fan. I do like Frakes though.

Oh, I'm ALWAYS in the minority on these boards! That's nothing new. Killing off Trip was not a "fun" way to wrap up the show, or the series. TATV would've pissed off ENT fans, no matter what, just for being the cross-over episode that it was. The show could've been very solid, everything ties in and makes sense and the ending's uplifting, BUT ... there's Riker in the holodeck, interacting with illusions of the ENT cast. So I'd never get out of being on the wrong side of the equation, as far as an ENT fan was concerned. Doubly so, the way things are! But I've always found myself entertained by this particular episode. It's "fun" to watch.

Commander William T. Riker is my favourite character in ALL of STAR TREK. Like General George Washington ... I, too, cannot tell a lie!

Was there ever an actual war with the Klingons? I take the "disaster" to mean that relations with the Klingons went from potentially positive to Cold War conditions.
Not during Enterprise's time more the TOS movies from the little bit I saw, I know that Picard said it led to decades of war but does that necessarily mean it had to happen right away? I mean roll a snowball down a hill can cause a avalanche so perhaps it's seen as if it was felt that Archer could have done better with the Klingons and that he was the 'snowball' slowly trickling down hill?

I thought Archer was more like a flake...

What do you think of Tom Riker?
Tom Riker ... is cool! Not only that, the character allowed Jonathan Frakes to guest star in DS9, in a different way. He really brought up everyone else's game in that episode and, as I understand it, the ratings hit the stratosphere! Rick Berman, et al, were so satisfied with the experience, that they brought him back for an appearance on VOY.

Kate Mulgrew hints that Janeway's really turned on by his mere presense, but in the script, nothing happens between them. Again, though, the ratings for that ep. were Out of This World! Frakes' nickname should've been "Gets" instead, because he definitely gets audiences to tune in.

Yes, it was on Death Wish, but he makes only a cameo appearance and has only a couple of lines.

His cameo was welcomed -- and needed! Openning the door for future appearances like those of Barclay, for example. I do not wish to derail this thread, though, by going so far off-topic with TNG-related fare. These Are The Voyages has Frakes in it and it benefits from that more than any ENT fan will admit. But it was an entertaining episode and ENT had its share of those.

Like the Orion Slave Girl episode ... now, that was great! The Orion know that sex can be a powerful ally and the ENTERPRISE nearly surrenders to it. The Slave Girls look fantastic, as they naturally would, but the bald Orion dude who's in cahoots with them reminds me so much of my Uncle Bill ... I kind of have to laugh at it. It's like, "noooo ... NO!!! Uncle Bill ... come on, now! Why do you have to be like that?" It's just funny ...

I've only watched Enterprise from start to finish entirely the once with some other episodes a fair few times so I'm not an expert but even with that in mind what does it say about Jeff Combs' performance as Shran that I was amazed he only appeared in ten episodes?

I mourn the fifth season which could've (should've) featured Shran as a season regular.

Yes Shran is a great character. I like him very much. It would have been great to see more of him. I really like the dynamics of his relationship with Archer, sometimes opponents and often friends.
I was very happy to find the ENT relaunch novels because they have more stories about him.
Of all Jeff Combs slew of Star Trek characters, to me Shran is the most memorable.

I wonder if this is a case of less means more? as in you appreciate a character more because you don't see much of them?
