General thoughts on ENT?

sorry did nomean to express an additional thought in a comversation br watned no digression on this thread

Enterprise was my favorite series (TNG a close second). The cast was outstanding and the stories were compelling. I was sad to see it cancelled after just four seasons. It would have been cool if it could have lasted longer, but sci Fi was dead in the early two thousands.
I recently ordered an Enterprise novel so it should be fun to have the story continue.

I like the episode "Home," very much. But how was it logical for T'Pol's mother to keep broken appliances around, waiting on someone like Trip to come along and repair them, for her and get on her good side? I really hate this aspect of the episode, it's so lazy and so stupid, because no Vulcan would keep using inefficient, broken-down equipment at home, as their only kitchen appliances ....

I think it was a hint that her finances weren't very good.

Seasons 1 and 2 will be tougher to get through.

Season 1 meanders a lot with writing, general direction and characterisation.

Season 2 has the weakest plotlines of the series and has to be endured to do a full watchthough.

Season 3 improves everything to a degree, but only if you really get behind the Xindi arc.

Season 4 has a very weak opening and panders a lot to canon, but has some good arcs.

Overall it's a very mixed series with some weak characters and silly plots. It can feel too much like Voyager and TNG at times, but it can grow on you.

I agree with your assessment. However, season 1 and 2 was more or less just all stand alone episodes trying to help develop each character. Season 3 was basically the whole Xindi Threat story arc, while Season 4 was mixed with a couple of episode story arcs and, as you mentioned, lots of canon, such as explaining why Klingons ended up looking more human during TOS compared to TNG and what brought the founding members of the Federation together. Of course, the best episodes of Season 4, at least for me, was the Mirror Universe. I think ENT should of been given a full run of 7 seasons. I like the series and felt it was short changed. After watching the series recently through a 3rd time, it has certainly grown on me and wish there would of been more.

It was a pity seeing how much work went into refurbishing the sets for season 4. They replaced and repainted half the sets which finally made the interior of the ship look a lot better. Then they were sadly bulldozed after one season of use.

(It was a fun idea they had to film the Columbia bridge scene by using the Enterprise bridge set during the studio's refurbishment while actual construction and work was being done on it.)

Yes, it's a pity that they stopped the series when it was really getting good. On the other hand they should caught on faster on what the people liked.

I liked the series better than some of the others, Voyager and DS9. I agree with some of the comments that different seasons had a more uneven quality. I liked the Daniels/time travel arc the best.

There were a couple of slight arcs through the first two seasons. There was the temporal cold war, which they (almost) completely botched by half-assing it and not planning ahead. There was also the relationship between Andorians and Vulcans, which was developed pretty well, and paid off in season 4, with the Vulcan and Andorian arcs leading to the beginning of federation.

The Temporal Cold War was a hot mess I really wish they'd skipped altogether. It made no real sense and temporal mechanics gives me a headache. I understand it was something that was mandated by the studio for whatever reason.

I wish they'd concentrated much more on real prequel stuff from the start. The Vulcan/Andorian stuff was one of those things they should have elaborated on. Now that would mostly have to wait until season four.

I don't think the TCW was actually confusing. Daniels was the goody and the enhanced Suliban were bad. The problem with the TCW episodes was that there was no sense of development. Episodes didn't end with a sense that anything had changed or had been learned; it was just stuff that happened.
And in the best TCW episode (Detained), the time war was almost irrelevant to the story.

Captain Jack is how you do a time agent and make them interesting and colourful.

But that said, Daniels was originally bland on purpose, so he could keep an eye on things without drawing attention. But that doesn't translate well to carrying stories.

TOS was my favorite, some of the TNG I watch on BBC America seem not as good in retrospect as when I saw them originally. TOS shows seem dated in some ways but have some basic themes and stories that at least to me are timeless. ENT was a good follow up to me but has the sense that the studio was half heartedly producing it.

What was with the NASA astronauts having cameos on ENTERPRISE, as engineering officers? They didn't contribute much to the proceedings, at all. I'm finding it hard to find the PR value in that for either NASA, or the show. Not that I "care," I mean ... if an astronaut wants to use his clout to get on the show because he's a fan, then fine ... but ... give him a dramatic Death Scene, or something, you know? Show him fighting a Gorn and gets killed. Or stuff him into a shuttle that gets too close to a black hole that crushes him to death, as he enters its gravity well. Anything, other than just standing around with a PADD and mugging for the camera ....

These guys were Trek fans, as I recall. For a fan of Star Trek, perhaps a show that inspired these fine astronauts to aim for careers in space, I imagine putting on an Enterprise uniform and standing on a bridge set, even as a background character, was a huge thrill.
