Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

https://trekmovie.com/2020/04/03/in...-picard-is-a-dream-exclusive-soundtrack-clip/

Switching shows, Discovery season three is in post-production now. Can you talk about where you are in the process and the logistics of recording in light of the lockdown in California?

I am writing the scores for the first, second, third, fourth and fifth episodes. We’re full speed ahead. They wrapped production like six weeks ago, maybe even longer. I am not working at my studio. I am working out of my home because of the lockdown, where I am writing for the episodes as they come in. What it means for my ability to record with an orchestra, I can’t do it right now, but the moment that they let me, I will.

I'm re-watching "The Sound of Thunder". It's still hard to watch Saru argue with Pike and coming on way too strong. Fear Ganglia made a huge difference before.

I just remembered the NYCC trailer showed Trill and the Trill Symbiot pools. I'm really excited to see how they're tied in. I assume they might use them to get 'first hand' information on what happened over the last 900 years.

Well, to be fair, she could return to the 23rd century in the season finale as well. I wouldn't put it past her to steal the Red Angel suit even at the end of the season if it took her that long to decide she didn't like it in the future.

Maybe she returns to the past in Discovery, leaving the crew in the future? She then "hides" Discovery somewhere, where the ship "waits" through the long ages . . . while to the crew it seems Discovery blinks away and then returns instantly? We know from Short Treks that Discovery will be abandoned for centuries, right?

Did you try the Twilight Zone? Some of it has been quite good.

I tried watching it, but it's not canon. Several episodes of the original Twilight Zone series showed Earth invaded and humanity destroyed, yet J.J. Peele's version completely ignores this and tries to pretend none of that happened. At least the 2002 version brought back Bill Mumy.

I was about the say I thought the whole point of the Twilight Zone was to explore the "What if?" type scenarios. Now, I'll grant my passing familiarity with the series might have me mistaken but I never felt like something was missing if I picked up an episode at random.

That's the beauty of it: separate short stories, each with a different spin and tone, jump aboard anytime, drop out anytime, skip what you want... I looked up the top episodes and those with trekkian themes, aliens, time travel, etc. and watched only those.

There are very few I will say I've enjoyed but it always left me with something to ponder about.

This article explains how Jeff Russo and other composers might be able to score TV series during this crisis. I was pretty close to the mark. The only thing I didn't think of was the possibility of them all doing a VR session and composing simultaneously that way.

One way or another, the soundtrack for DSC S3 and other series will get done. They're figuring out how to do it, innovating, and I don't think they'll have to recycle from the first two seasons or Picard.

That having all been said, I hope whatever they do makes it worth it. Even though I like Jeff Russo's scores better than most of what we had during the '90s and '00s, I still think the best music for Star Trek on TV is from TOS and the first four seasons of TNG. DSC's music shouldn't sound like those, but I still hope they kick it up a notch and make it worth the wait.
