Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

So, now that facebook's image servers have been down for hours and all of social media is ablaze with people sharing what the site's AI algorithm has tagged their pictures with, I decided to take a peek myself. Well, my cover picture is a screencap of the Discoprise from the end of Will You Take My Hand?, that facebook helpfully described as "Cover Photo, Image may contain: night."

So, I guess that makes it official. Facebook's image processing AI is unable to identify the Discoprise as the Starship Enterprise. It must have something to do with that 25% difference thing... Flawless logic! :guffaw:

Don't make fun of the AIs or someday they might want to kill us all...

First time poster here. As a Star Trek fan for years I was excited by a new series and while Discovery Season 1 didn't really capture my attention, I liked it don't get me wrong, it didn't feel Star Trek. I was happy though with season 2 as I felt it got closer to Star Trek we've known. There were still issues but for sure the series was a step up and with season 3 coming soon, I am interested to see where they go with this.

Yes, Season 3 is puzzling. Because it's hard to imagine Disco 930 years in the future. I mean either Control eventually won and they'll be surrounded with nothing but primitive technology-less people. Disco being the only piece of technology around OR Control will have effectively been completely defeated and Disco will be as obsolete as a trireme (ancient Roman rowing ship) today!!!

Too many cooks...

There were "too many cooks" but it didn't stop me enjoying Discovery for the most part.
As I've said many times on here, there are good episodes and some not so good, I don't really think there were bad ones.
We can pick faults, and plot line glitches in every version of Trek, in fact we can do it with every television and film drama we ever watch, it doesn't change the fact that we can enjoy these programmes.
Thousands of posts about Discovery on here suggests, that while not everyone is convinced by the show, we all care enough to discuss it at great length.
I'm looking forward to Season 3 and personally I don't give a flying fuck if half the galaxy don't like it.

Why only these two? Despite how common it is in sci-fi, absolutely nothing requires that the entire galaxy is at roughly the same level of cultural and technological advancement. Yes, Star Trek has always been guilty of this, but even that didn't stop the Enterprise or Voyager routinely encountering pre-warp people or civilizations that have just developed the warp drive and were on the brink of joining the galactic community.

The Discovery went not only 930 years into the future, but also 50 thousand light years away from the Federation. That's about as blank a slate as it gets. It can be anything and everything the writers desire. My dream setting would be an anarchic region that's only just begun recovering from a devastating interstellar war, filled with wrecked starships, scavengers, space pirates, millennia-old patchwork space stations (like the first drafts for Deep Space 9) etc... and the future Federation would be an out-of-context force just on the brink of arriving in the region, so at first we'd only hear rumors in the same vein as the tall tales of medieval sailors about one-legged and dog-headed people from the mythical land of Cathay. And the future Federation can be anything, evil or benevolent, or even lost its way and fallen into elder race-style complacency like the Vorlons of Babylon 5.

Basically, to go with the Roman analogy, I'd like to see a setting akin to a Roman legion transported into pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, just before the Spanish arrive. But, to close off my tangent, the point is, the writers are free to do anything they want with the setting, they don't have to limit themselves to either Control wiping out everything or a triumphant super-advanced Federation controlling the whole galaxy.

I guess they'll have to otherwise there won't be much of a story to tell.

I prefer finding ways to be excited about Disco instead of ways not to be.

We're actually going truly into the unknown. Except for the brief glimpse in "Calypso", where everything was contained within Discovery, we've never had anything take place in this time period.

And frankly, we can't even be 100% certain that Calypso took place in this timeframe. The ship had been abandoned for 1000 years at that point. For all we know, it's 1000 years past the 900 year jump we just took. Or, it's 1000 years past some other time period that they journey to further down the road.

One thing is for certain, it will be the worst 3rd season of television ever produced in the history of mankind.

Nah. As long as they lay off the fanwank and give us a half-way engaging story I'll be content. I'll be really happy if they can figure out a way to stick the landing on their story arc, which has been a big problem for me during the first two seasons.

THIS
is the biggest thing for me right now. I can bathe myself in warm, slimy fanwank....but not having a well-thought-out arc with a great ending is almost inexcusable. I can see an episode sucking at this (sticking the landing), but not an entire arc. That's your entire year's worth of work product. Gotta spend all your time and energy there, and make sure the damn thing lands right and makes sense.

Or...maybe...Discovery jumped 1900 years into the past, then waited around for 1000 years, so it's exactly at the same point it jumped ahead to. I know, right?

While I was arguing discussing things with all of you, I was working off-the-clock on editing this footage I shot. I interviewed four bands at a local pub for a Rock & Blues Jam. I mixed in the interviews with actual performances. One song from each band. Who says you can't spend time on here and be productive at the same time?

If you like rock'n'roll or are into the blues, I hope you enjoy!

The Comic Con Panel for Star Trek Universe (which seems like it might be the official name for I used to call Star Trek: All Those Series!) will be Saturday, July 20th, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Pacific Time.

I'm finally working my way through season 2 and after a good start, I'm really fucking bored with the Red Angel stuff and her mom. Does the entire season really need to be about the end of all life in the universe? Something we know ain't gonna fucking happen.
