Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

The cold, harsh truth is: I don't expect anything after this. I'm braced for this to be The End. It'll be a pleasant surprise if that turns out not to be true.

I think it's the endish.

Discovery is done. But Starfleet Academy is almost positively set in the era, so Discovery people could pop in.

All of Trek's P+ shows spun out from Discovery except Picard.

Except Picard. And Lower Decks. And Prodigy.

There was one show that spun out from Discovery. Possibly/probably two with Starfleet Academy.

I don't really count "Short Treks" as a show, it's like, Discovery bonus material with one Picard toss out.

Discovery has been... controversial. It got some acclaim. It also received a fair share of backlash. If I were a P+ exec, I wouldn't consider it a slam dunk to just keep doing Discovery stuff, but I wouldn't write it off either. There is probably room for something generally-Discovery adjacent and something not. If they have the capacity and desire to run two show productions, going forward it's a better/more diversified bet to do a Discovery-related show and a Non-Discovery related show.

Oops, meant live action.
There are 4 Discovery spinoffs:

Short Treks
SNW
Starfleet Academy
Sec 31

And while the other new series are not spinoffs none of the shows would exist without Discovery.

Sooo...like they're doing now??

That's now what they're doing now at all.

After Discovery ends, we will have SNW... Discovery spin-off and SFA, most likely Discovery spin-off. I think there's another season of LDS in there somewhere as well. And Section 31... Discovery spin-off.

I'm hoping against hope that SFA is going through some last minute changes, originally intended to be in the DSC 32nd century, but being retooled as a 25th century PIC-era show instead. I'm almost certainly wrong, but one can hope.

I don't hate the DSC 32nd century era, but I would prefer the PIC-era.

Yes, you have SNW and Lower Decks.

One DSC related, one not DSC related.

I imagine once DSC is done something knew will be worked on. And so it goes.

Or it dies. It happens.

been watching a lot of the NCAA tourney and I am pretty surprised they haven’t been promoting Discovery’s final season. I’ve seen plenty of commercials for CBS and P+ programming but nothing for Trek.

That seems like a bad business decision to me.

Starfleet Academy is using the same stages as Discovery, so what would have they done if discovery wasn’t cancelled? Find more space? Or was discovery cancelled to make room for Academy?

I wanted (past tense) seven seasons but that would've been the five seasons we'll have except with the third season taking two seasons (one season with Discovery on its own, and another reconnected with the fleet) and then a final season that would make "Calypso" make sense.

Since then, I've come to the conclusion that the third season's story had to be told in only one season. Earth is the first place they go, once Burnham is reunited with Discovery. Then they're pointed in the direction of someone who knows where Starfleet is. Then they find Starfleet because they have the info. It's pretty straight-forward. So, I have to admit that Discovery re-connecting with Starfleet after five episodes makes sense. And Discovery could barely hold its own against some shitty Titan ship. It wouldn't have stood any chance at all if they ran into a more serious adversary in the 32nd Century. So, the ship had to be upgraded ASAP.

It's just that then it only left them with eight more episodes. Two of which involved writing out Georgiou so she could be in Section 31. That gave us six episodes to tell the rest of the story of the third season, when they would've had 13 if they weren't introducing a new century and writing off one of the main characters. So that makes the third season feel rushed in spots. I would've loved to have seen more of Osyraa. And I would've liked to have seen a little bit more building up of the Emerald Chain.

If the third season had been allowed to be 20 episodes instead of 13, I would've been happier with it. The first five episodes introducing the 32nd Century, the two episodes to write out Georgiou and give us those great Mirror Universe episodes to see things we didn't see the first time around (like Killy and Mirror Burnham), then the 13 episodes we normally would've had.

The 13 episodes we have gets us everything we needed to see, though I would've wanted more, but I can still live with it at the end of the day.

Then there's "Calypso".

I have reason to believe the fifth season will address "Calypso". Look at this YouTube video at the 15:30-mark. Back up to the 14:30-mark if you want better context. (3) Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Trailer Details - USS Defiant Retrieved From Mirror Universe? - YouTube

Anyway, if everything plays out the way I think it might, they will have touched upon everything I would've wanted to see over the course of seven seasons within the five we'll have.
