General Computer Thread

guys hope this is ok to put here
my desktop pc started to show incorrect time and date over the last couple of weeks .my guess was the cmos battery was dying .(bios showing wrong time as well
so changed battery, had to remove graphic card to do it ,battery directly under part of it and reseat graphic card
started up good ,window tile showing and white circle rotating ,but it kept hanging there
inserted windows install/upgrade disk selected advanced options ,selected startup repair and after about 2 hours i got into my workspace with access to programs and files great
powered down then next day switched on now still hanging on window tile screen where do i go now there is a startup setting on windows disk (low res video /debugging/safemode)do i use this option or what could be wrong or how do i fix this ?
use the safe mode.
the go into device manager, from the view (iirc) option at the top, choose show hidden devices.

Then go down to display adapters, right click on each and any entries related to the gpu then restart and see if Windows reconfigures the display correctly.

Thing is that removing the gpu to replace the battery and then putting it back in the exact same slot shouldn't be causing this issue even if it's Windows that we're talking about.

It's possible there's some other issue causation != correlation.

Do the above.

If you think you will have recurring problems, make a bootable USB (at least 64GB) drive with Ventoy, then download Hiren's Boot CD to it. It uploads into memory as a diagnostic version of Windows along with a lot of great utilities to diagnose and fix problems. While you're at it, put an ISO on it, something like Linus Mint, a version of Linux that is beginner friendly.

Hmm, there is a small posibility that the GPU isn't completely seated properly, especially larger cards can be a pain in the backside to seat properly.
If Marc's suggestions don't work out then maybe open up the machine again, pull out the GPU and seat it again and look closely that is is really seated good and also if the powerconnectors are seated properly, if it's a NVIDIA card and it has one of those rotten 16 pin connectors then also check twice...

Exactly this.. I thought my card was seated level and everything hooked up well one time but I kept having random video glitches, freeze ups. Opened the case and took a better look and the gpu was in fact not seated fully in the slot.

update
noticed the motherboard has integrated graphics so disconnected the graphic card and used the integrated graphic, still same result, so plugged back in the graphic card and booted it into safe mode
after long time i got into my workspace
i shut it down and rebooted normally, after long time (10 mins ) got to login screen ,keyed in password again after long time ( 6 mins)got into work space, clicking on shortcuts and folders take about 4-5 minutes to open some just hang (settings page) .tried again tonight getting in but long delays (shortcuts/folders/setting page , usb mouse working fine
any ideas where i go from here to get it back to normal speed again ?

tried boot cd long time ago on a flash drive i had and screwed it up (don't know my way round that sort of stuff ,did download a linux mint 21 couple week ago didn't try it yet ,can that be used to fix my windows problem (again programing/software is not my strength

Sounds like Windows destroyed itself, I would try and boot from the Linux Mint drive and see what that does, if it boots without a problem and behaves normally when it comes to speed etc then Windows needs to be reinstalled, if Mint also is slow then you might have some hardware damage.

Yeah... 11 does that with a certain enthusiasm and vigor.. when it fails it does so spectaculary..
Windows always was a bit iffy and fussy but as of win2k it improved, took XP a while to get it right but late in its life it was very stable, Vista was troublesome when it came out but also late in its life was much better 7 was like win2k 8.1 was like 7 but you had to use classic(now open) shell to make it well, like 7 and to me it holds a slight edge over windows 7 because of some stuff it supports and being better at handling multicore processors, 10 now at the end it's pretty okay... 11 has never impressed me unless it's the LTCS version I'm running at the moment, home and even pro are NOT ever going to be installed on any of my machines..

Honestly the LTCS should be the only version that is made, all the extra non-sense that MS injects in their other SKU's is because of their stupid PM's wanting KPI's to hit to look good for promotion.

I'm saying that as a Ex-MS employee, it's always that weasly PM who wants to "Look good for the Boss" and make more money by screwing over the customer, not realizing they're driving away customers.

Microsoft quietly implies Windows has LOST millions of users since Windows 11 debut — are people really abandoning ship?

MS used to own 95.#% of the DeskTop OS market back in the day, now they're down to 72.3%

But back then Windows didn't dork around and waste your time, it was simple, slick, and un-obtrusive.

Didn't try to force you to log-in online with a MS account either.

Now the idiot PM's in charge want to pump up their KPI's at the cost of losing their user base as they migrate to a non-MS platform.

I agree, there are all kinds of little and big frustrations when dealing with Windows when you just use it, it's crude and unfinished and they don't intend on fixing anything because the normal user isn't important, everything with a corporate licence is where the money is and of course their cloud services Windows? Pff.. whatever.

And yeah, I am one of the people that moved away from Windows, I switched to Linux Mint 13 in 2015 or 2016, first just on one of my laptops because it was getting old and slow and at that time switching to Mint made it possible to get a few more years out of the old beast, after a few years it just became better than Windows for my needs and now I have one Windows machine for gaming and a whole bunch of desktop machines and a laptop for everything not gaming related.

So yeah, I can very well imagine the path that people take and move away from Windows.

I was debating on what to do with my W10 computer. M$ declared that my 8GB ram and SSD apparently weren't sufficient for them. Then the thing got knocked onto the floor and broke, solving the whole problem.

I deeply resented being forced by M$ to buy a replacement device after being assured that Windows 10 was their final OS, so breaking a refurbished eBay special bought when they stopped supporting 7 wasn't a tragedy to me. I didn't want to use W11, it's os is kludge and full of bloat and spyware and apparently it won't work unless you have a M$ account and 24/7 internet.

Now I use my phone and my Chromebook for the Internet, reserving my Win7 Thinkpad (made in 2008 and still going) for a media library and gaming center with WiFi switched off. I've come to the understanding that I don't need Windows 11 in my life.

So long, and thanks for all the fish patches.
