General Computer Thread

What about this one? I think it ticks all the boxes, no it isn't cheap...

yeah $CA1650 before tax, there's an MSI 49" OLED for $1549 from Amazon who have a 45" LG VA panel for just under $1100 which has some good reviews and similar price for ROG Strix but that's a pretty old model.

One other challange - where to keep the box during the duration of the warranty. We're in a 550 sq foot apartment with little storage space and no building storage (scummy building owners). My in-laws downsized and moved so don't have their basement either.

Nothing wrong with that, i built mine in 2014, I7 core 4770, and apart from one of the 8 gig memory sticks failing only last year, i still use it today for with a RTX4060 for the likes of Star Trek online or actually starting to play my insane game backlog at last, i just completed Borderlands 2. Lol

I'm still running an RTX2060 that does job the gaming that I though haven't for while (MS Flight Sim 2020, X-Plane, Trainz). At this point no plans to update there but definitely wouldn't to be a 4090 - WAF only goes so far :)

I'm glad I still use low power stuff.

I'm not planning on upgrading for the foreseeable future. I'm using an RX 6600 with 8gig ram on my desktop and an Nvidia RTX 3050 4gig on the laptop

The cost of the 5090s is crazy here. Who would pay over $4000 for one. I'm waiting on the 5070 Ti to be released. Undecided when I'll buy it.

Well made my decision on the new monitor.

The $1700 price tag for the OLED failed the WAF test so I went with the 45" LG which seems to have a pretty decent panel that from front on is almost as good as the Samsung IPS monitors I have (which will now go to my wife).

Loose some of the vertical height but don't think it matters that much.

Just had to play around to get the resolution (5120x1440) working. I normally run a 2017 surface pro as a thin client but it wouldn't play nicely. HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 should support it but think the problem was going from mini-dp on the Surface Dock to HDMI.

But I've got N100 based mini-pc that's doing the trick nicely

A very good "Video Essay" about how modern Algorithms are screwing over many folks into "Algorthimic/Automation Complacency".

OMG yes I love that channel

It's scary what percentage of people discover a persons video.

According to "Technology Connections", 92.7% out of 44.5M viewers discover his video through the YT Home Page's Automated Video Discovery feature.
Only 4.6% of the viewers use their Subscription Tabs to find his videos.

We need to convince AS MANY people as possible to AVOID the YT "Home Page / Discovery section" FIRST & start with their Subscriptions Page instead.

People need to regain their Agency in what they curate for themselves, don't let the machine/algorithm decide for them.

I didn't bother with that and just searched for his channel and it was at the top of my search results.

My suggestion list always seems to feature tech videos and he and jayz2cents are usually in the first few suggestions.

I never use the YT (Home Page / Discovery / Suggestion) as a "First Choice".

It's always my YT (Subscriptions) as my "First Choice" in pages that I visit.

The only time I'll look at YT Home Page is when I'm bored and want to try something else.

Which is rare given how many Channel Subscriptions I have.

I've never looked at the homepage except on my phone

Interesting.

His video was interesting but I think search results and suggestions tend to be different for everyone.

A lot of the suggestions I find can be directly linked to whatever other content you watch on YouTube which can really shake up what's suggested to you. I'm just basing my comments on my own personal experience.
