General Computer Thread

Anybody here ever use a vertical mouse? My Logitech Performance MX is on it's last legs I think, and it's out of production, so of course a replacement from ebay is more than it was in-store.

The MX Master 3 looks decent, but also overpriced. Logitech has good ideas, and good designs, but lacks physical quality.

There's an MX Vertical from Logitech I'm thinking about. Somewhat less pricey if I can get one.

I need a larger mouse. The Performance MX is about as small as I can comfortably go. The MX Vertical is, by nature, a larger mouse. It looks about right.

Then there's button placement. The two thumb buttons need to be just right.

My windows is working fine but has an odd bug. On bootup it no longer shows the lock screen image, instead you get the default one which is a cave or something. It's not breaking anything just its annoying because I can't seem to fix it and none of the google helps seemed to do the job. Was this intentional since the last update?

One of my colleagues does (and one of the different keyboards too) but I'm not sure it's for me.

There's not much news I can tell, Linux Mint 19.3 has been great so far even on the 2200G

Do you use 32-bit Linux or 64-bit? I used the 32-bit version of PCLinuxOS - which worked fine, but had sound issues with the 64-bit version. Perhaps its just driver issues with 64-bit Linux in general.

Someone who works where I do has one, but I haven't been there in a month and won't be back there for at least a month, so....

I have larger hands, so have always preferred a larger mouse. The Performance MX, the Microsoft Natural Wireless 6000 before that. Both good sized mice. In fact, I miss the MS one more than I would the Logitech.

Most of my machines are 64 bit and have more than 4Gb RAM so they all are on Linux 64 bit, I never used PCLinuxOS, I stick to Linux Mint which shares its repositories with Ubuntu/Debian, I am not aware of any driver problems concerning 64 bit, on the contrary, 32 bit is almost done for, many distos will stop creating them.

Anker also do a version of these...

Have you used one? As much as I know Logitech are overpriced, I wonder what the quality is on one that I can get for under $20.

Not tried one but Anker are quite a good brand, i have one of their usb power banks and it is still sitting at full charge 2 month after it was last charged....plus i have a few of their cables and they are very good quality but don't break the bank.

I was close to getting a Logitech MX Vertical, but apparently it doesn't have the hyper-fast scroll wheel option (as opposed to the standard ratcheting option). I love the ability to let the scroll wheel fly to get through long documents or web pages.

There is a seller who has many new Performance MX's (non-retail packaging) for $80 now, which is a decent price considering the original $100 price. I'll stick with what I know until they improve the vertical one.

OK I like the Ryzen 5 1600 it's a great replacement for my FX 6300

But I want to pair it with a good motherboard with at least 4 sata ports and support for my existing gpu. I'd like to keep my gpu as it's served me well.

So existing gpu is my R9 380 4gig ddr5

I can keep my existing PSU and optical drives so anyone have any ideas for a board and ram?

I actually use the B450M-K for my main machine, decent office machine board, the 2600 non X should work fine on it since it only pulls 65 watts, you can use the stock cooler for that, it's not loud and good enough for that chip, also since it is a top down cooler it will put an airflow over the VRM which has no heatsinks.

Did a test run of an ancient machine yesterday, the mainboard had bad capacitors but was otherwise fine, also it has very little running hours, in the 10 years that I've had it it might have run only a few weeks of total running time, I managed to get the capacitors replaced by new ones of the same spec and of a reputable brand, rebuild the machine a few months ago and mounted a backplate which the cooler didn't have so I removed the mainboard from the casing and checked the mounting again, all was fine, put the board back in and then switched on the machine.
I had it run all day, it's a Pentium Dual Core E2160 so 1.8Ghz with 4Gb RAM (3 usable because it runs XP) and a Radeon HD 3450 graphics card.
Machine did fine, no hiccups or crashes, all stable so now it is inside a cardboard box where I'll leave it be, I'll dig it out now and then to check if it's still good but otherwise I'll leave it as somesort of time capsule.

Would that board be OK for some games? I still love Shadow Of The Tomb Raider so wondering how I'll go with the new board?

Of course it would be okay with games, it just isn't a board that would take an 8 core 16 thread or higher chip that easily for a 2600 it is fine and will do nicely, it just isn't a board that can take CPU's that draw a lot of juice.

I gathered that from the specs. But with the CPU I have chosen it should at least run Shadow, and probably way better then the setup I have now which is getting old.

Currently using an MSI 970 gaming motherboard
