General Computer Thread

There are plenty of multi socket mainboards which are usually used in high end desktop and server machines.

You would definitely need a case with extra vents in the side for the multiple CPU fans, not to mention large and more numerous in & out case fans. Of course I would probably try water cooling. Do they make a mini chiller?

Oh no I don't think I'd do it, but the idea is intriguing......

The current system I have is all air cooled but hardly breaks high temperatures even in load.

Is it the cost that prevents them being more widely available, or would they be totally unsuitable for regular users?

Lets now.

You want multi-socket then you're look at Xeon E5 or Epyc 72xx.

So you can start with a Supermicro X10 series motherboard for $AU370.

Then you want two proceessors,. Cheapest is a E5-2603v4 s a 1.7Ghz chip, 6 core, 6 thread at $AU303.

So far you're at $976.

say min 32GB RAM. Can go either ECC or LRDIMM.

LRDIMM Is 16GB kit is $AU243 and you'd need two of them so thats $486. ECC would be about $20 per kit

So by this time you're at $1462 for MB, CPU and RAM.

This assumes you've got a case that will take a full ATX motherboard and suitable PSU.

Does that answer your question?

Well, I've seen pricier computers;)

So have I :)

That was merely the cheapest dual socket system I could price without spending out hours on it :)

Of course e-bay is good dual socket (and more)

Dell R710s (and starting to come through the R720s) are popular with home labbers. I have considered one to replace my current server but not sure I want to drop the cash on 6year+ old system. Plus for me the shipping to Canada seems almost as much at the damn computer!!.

I think my first 486 was technically pricier, but yeah, prices have come down a lot. I occasionally look at online sites just to test build some, though they don't usually have twin processor rigs.

Just for giggles, I've popped to one site, pcspecialist.co.uk (I suspect the graphics cards are the killer on this) but it has:-
i7-6900 processor(3.3ghz)
128gb Mem (16gb across 8 slots)
2 x PNY Quardro P6000 graphics card (each with 24gb mem)
1500w psu (more than is needed but just in case)
Left it with a 500gb hard drive and water cooling and it still comes out at GBP10,880 - before chucking 20% vat on top of that. I think that's a bit more than I'd ever use to buy a pc:hugegrin:

I know my current board couldn't take that much memory, though I wouldn't mind some more than I currently have.

Yeah the Quadros would add a bit as they are more aimed at the corporate market (engineering/CAD/data modelling) but the consumer equivalents come in around the $US1k mark.

For the cpu you wimped man :) Take an i9-7900X with 10c/20t for $US999 :)

Ooh, I hadn't noticed the i9, but on that particular website, I think they listed under i7 extreme computers and I'd just messed about with a workstation one. (Actually, I didn't even know they'd gotten i9s out yet, but I only really start hitting the research when I need an upgrade.) - I suspect an i9 would be a little outside my preferred price range though:hugegrin:.

Yeah..... That does..... Unless you're a really well heeled hobbyist, yeah a bit pricey.

Is Ebay a good place for 2nd hand RAM. I want to get 32gig of DDR3 ram but it's becoming rare these days and the prices are not friendly brand new.

It's not THAT rare and a quick price check tells me it's not too badly priced, either.

I would only get used RAM if there is a clear and amenable return policy. eBay is a notorious dumping ground for broken PC parts. Watch out for words like "untested." And even if they do say it's tested, if you can't return it if it's defective, hard pass.

Having a quick look at newegg.com.au shows lots of DDR3 ram. Can pickup up 16GB (2x8GB for $AU138 Not the fastest spec memory on the planet but unless you're absolutely pushing the system you're probably not going to notice it.

Of course if you're just going to get the ram the shipping will eat you alive.

In May 2014 I bought a 116GB G-Skill 16GB DDR 1866 kit for $CA164.99 (before tax). The same kit is $CA30 more expensive but then the $CA isn't as good vs the $US as it was at the time so factoring in that, inflation and the general increase in ram prices I'm not sure what the real issue is.

Perhaps the poster needs to look at his needs to see if 32GB is really necessary.

I'll have a look over there.....

I normally shop at PC Case Gear admittedly not the cheapest place but I've used them for a long time.

Did the once every six months thorough cleanup of the game rig, thanks to the filters (Antec P-183 V3) dust was not too bad, replaced some fans for new ones so the machine can go on for a few more years. :mallory:

I alway like the combination of Intel and Nvida simply because they are the greener option and make for a more cooler more quiet and more power efficient PC....i am running a i7 core, a GTX970, 16 gig, 3 zalman 120mm case fans, 1 240 SDD and 2 one TB HDD, 1 DVD drive, a oculus rift and two semsors via 4 USB 3.0 ports, via on a branded 650 PSU, and i still have plenty of power to spare. lol

My main system is a 2.05Ghz quad core AMD Athlon 5350 which has a max TDP of... 25 watts this includes the graphics card which is a HD 8400, for all desktop uses this is more than enough also because I don't run M$ Spyware 10 but Linux Mint 18.2 total system power consumption is about 35-40 watts, it has USB 3, 8Gb RAM a 1 TB HDD and a burner and the CPU has all features and optimalisations that a i7 has, total system cost 130-ish Euro.

As for the game machine AMD FX 8350, which was at the time I bougt it (2013) the absolute best option for the money, everything cheaper was far slower, everything faster at least 100-200 Euros more expensive and totally not worth it, it has 8Gb RAM 2 SSD's ,120Gb OS, 250Gb games, and a GTX 780, it runs Win 8.1 and it has Steam on it and some other games and that is it. When I don't game it is switched off so I might have the edge in power efficiency..:mallory::shifty:

The problem with RAM on ebay is, a lot of sellers don't know what they're talking about. I bought some laptop Memory based on a clear statement that it was compatible with my model, and it ended up not being recognized by the laptop.

I think I put it in my brother's laptop and it worked there, so it wasn't bad, just mis-identified.

RAM is almost always something I'll pay a little more for at Best Buy. Easier and quicker to return if there's an issue.

I am sure the that AMD does not have Hyper-Threading technology, plus i am sure it also lacks over instructions sets as well a reduced memory bandwidth and the obvious that is it twice as slow, but you got me on wattage, big time. ;)
