General Computer Thread

It is, indeed. People would be surprised at what you can embed in an animated gif or tiny piece of ad script. If you haven't already, I also recommend downloading MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Free. Nothing is better at finding malware and hidden adware.

Speaking of hijacking Google Analytics hijacks this page a lot when you do a search on this site. Causes errors.

BTW how would those programs deal with false positives?

I have a ton of game trainers and I sometimes use them when playing games so I occasionally get told by Windows Defender I have a virus when it's the game trainer running in the background?

It will often detect game trainers. If you wish to circumvent them, it's easy to add an exception in the software.

If you use Firefox then there are a few addons that are almost mandatory now: Noscript will prevent any script from running without your permission, Better Privacy to get rid of super cookies/flash cookies and Privacy Badger to keep trackers and other stalkerware at bay, I also use FlashBlock to keep flash crap from playing, if you do want to see the stuff you can just hit a button and make it play.

But what keeps Google away?
For instance when you visit places like here and DA sometimes you see weird google type addresses being used in the background....

The combination of all mentioned will make sure that most trackers won't be able to work anymore so they can't really follow you around anymore, your IP address though can still be logged, there is no 100% solution.

The only danger is as you start blocking tracking sites it can screw up some of your webpages so they don't display properly.

Also if when using the free versions of the Malwarebytes Products, people should be aware of their limitation] Iirc with the anti-malware, there's no realtime scanning and there's no automatic updates.

I always install Spywareblaster, it will make your machine immune to stuff without taking resources, you to need to update it by hand though, Spybot is also a good scanner/removal tool.

I used to use Spybot Search + Destroy and that was good but got put off because people said it's become bloatware..

It has. It's a shell of its former awesome self, and now offers installs of third party products.

OK do not want.
Yeah, once I installed it, and saw the way it was, I wanted to uninstall it. Turns out uninstalling it is a pain in the ass, as it's designed to reinstall upon removal of the program because it assumes Windows 10 deleted it. I had to delete registry keys and modify startup menus to make it go away for good.

OMG Spybot sounds like Windows 10 :D

Once you invite it in...... Run

^^^
I use the portable version of spybot, the last time I looked at it was last year or so, didn't know it had become bloatware.

I also use Firefox portable, thunderbird portable etc, no need to install and if your Windows kicks the bucket you don't have to reinstall all the stuff.

Well shit, thanks for the heads up. I have it on 7 with no issues. It sucks that it's like that now.

I just installed Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit onto my mom's laptop and it works well. Windows 8.

So, install was refreshed, still messing up.

Now Windows Explorer freezes if I right click. Not left, just right. Browser works, DVD player works, Steam works, but WE freezes. And restarting isn't doing a thing.

Going to do a full reinstall sometime next week.

Edit: It turns out this is a common problem with Windows 7-10.
I found a file to help try and solve the problem and downloaded it.
Fuckers know this is a right click on WE issue, put it in a ZIP file that has to be right clicked, freezes everything, what the hell use was that!?

Edit: 2
So got the Shell Extension viewer, disabled all third party ones, restarted with a lot of trouble since the task bar disappeared, restarted WE, nothing, still freezes on right clicking, so I've lost a lot of teh function of Windows for no reason.
