General Computer Thread

I've got computers dating back to the DOS era and I have most Windows versions but none of my oldies run Vista, might try it on one of my more ancient testmachines..

At the moment I'm installing Windows 8.1 on an old machine, it was running XP but it's very well capable of running 8.1 and yes of course I've already downloaded OpenShell to make the GUI usable again, as for the OS itself, besides the GUI thing it is by far the most stable Windows I've ever used, has enough of all the modern doodads so it can handle SSD's from the get go etc and it is really quite fast.
The machine itself is an old AM2 Athlon64 4800+ with 4GB RAM (for now, need to dig out some more from my junkyard..) it has a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H mainboard, one of the three different versions, I always forget which one... storage is handled by a 200 GB Samsung spinpoint which is purrrrring like a kitten and a Geforce 9500 GT to handle graphics, no speed demon but still a usable machine, might also put 8.1 on my Optiplex 745.. :shifty:

We've still got the equipment to run the older stuff though I don't think we have vista. (It was on one of my dads laptops, but we got 7 and I don't think we kept the option). I've got an 8/8.1 usb rescue stick somewhere and I know one machine still runs 98 as there is a specific program my dad uses that runs on 98 and 98 only (No compatibility mode)

I didn't know he was still using that, but it's on a really old laptop that I bought for him for a tenner more years ago than I care to remember and he stuck 98 on it out of fun (Can it run it) and every so often, keeps it up to date

On the topic of AI, this is pretty fascinating.

What is real? Feels like we're entering the Matrix.

dos is old old school

Dos was the eternal terminal..
But it did its job well and it was lightning fast.. I don't want to set up autoexec.bat or config.sys anymore though, the limited amount of IRQ's was a hassle..

Got the Athlon installed and now comes the long and laborious work to install everything you want and to stop running everything you don't want.. installing and setting up Linux: 1 hour, maybe two, installed and setting up Windows two days minumum..

Also reinstalled my Compaq Presario 3000 laptop, it's a Netburst Celeron which spits out heat at 2.8 Giggleherz, it only has 512MB RAM and 32MB of that is assigned to the ATI 9000 gfx card but XP pro runs peachy on it, the machine is 22 years old and when it comes to build quality that thing is the sturdiest laptop I've ever used.

I know this is the computer thread but I'm having an issue with Bluetooth headphones and hoping if anyone else has had similar issues what I might be able to try.

Headphones work fine with the laptop but when I try to pair them with my phone they only work for phone calls but not music.. I recently upgraded to Android 13 as well if.

That could be anything from different bluetooth versions to any other kind of incompatibility... guess you could see if there's something online in fora or the manufacturers website that might fix it.

Yeah I did I looked all that up forums in reddit for my make and model of phone and none of their solutions seemed to work. I did learn that with some phones android 13 and 14 do have issues with things like bluetooth. If I feel really despo I will do a full factory reset

I get it, but ppl could just put the phone down.
That's easier said than done for a lot of people.

If you remove the distraction, there is nothing to put down. It's like telling people to stop eating junk when they have it available to eat in their home. If it's not there, they can't eat it.

Oh you're right about that, I am just sayng I find it redundant that we need more tech to get rid of ourselves from more tech.
It's like those apps that people need to subscribe to to remind them to take a screen break, as in pay money for something that could be free.

Rumors are Apple is going to make a clamshell iPhone.
The irony of it all.

Only rumors let's believe it when they have a demo model. I have a 4G flip phone with big buttons and big screen but it doesn't have NFC, and if it did I'd swap to it and stick with it in a heartbeat

Here's a couple of linkies

I've been looking for a nice Windows Laptop but for some reason a lot of videos I've been watching are just bashing Windows and Co-Pilot. While I hate all the AI stuff, is Windows really that bad? I guess growing up with it and being more familiar with it (I also have a Mac), it has given me some pause of actually buying a new Windows laptop. Also, could it really be as bad as Tahoe is and this ugly looking Liquid glass? I still think the borders seem so misaligned and the borders on border thing they were going with looks tacky.

I am a windows person and honestly you are going to see videos like that because for each of us the algorithms push different kinds of videos to each person, and lately I've seen a ton of those too but I use Windows every day and have had almost zero issues compared to what is posted online by youtubers. I got all the AI stuff in my edition thanks to updates but I haven't touched any of it and it hasn't intruded on any of my activities so where is the problem people?

As for laptops I have an Asus TUF F15 purchased in the middle of 2024 but I don't use it that much and it also got all the updates but I have had almost zero issues with that machine too. The only modification I did with the laptop was I removed Armory Crate, disabled it the BIOS because Asus are sneaky bastards and enable auto install of that via BIOS, so yeah disabled that sucker and installed G-Helper which is lighter and not bloatware like Armory Crate

i still have windows vista lol

Hey there are people still rocking Windows 7 that won't budge, eh whatever :D

Here's an article for cleaning it up:

I did have a Lenovo computer and ran into some BIOS issues to the point where I had to return it. What happened was I did a Windows defender update and it led to the computer no longer booting up and stuck on the Lenovo screen. When I called the customer service for help, they had me go through some steps which led to this BIOS screen (I don't understand it) that was password protected. Basically they ended up locking me out of my own laptop and I had to return it. Kind of a bummer exercise but now I'm back to looking for a new laptop. I've heard good and bad things about Asus. I've also had an Acer computer since 2019 (Which is why I'm replacing it) and I'm looking for a new laptop that has better sound and probably a larger screen.
