General Computer Thread

Not sure who else has been reading about the new Intel Processor, but I've heard that the 15th Generation should be released next month. I'm thinking about my next PC, as I'm planning on getting one. Will be good to update from i7-9700 chip that I am using at the moment. Just need to decide Core Ultra 9 or 7. Sadly I can't plan how much it will cost me without the graphics card (as I plan on using my RTX-3060 that is in my current machine until get a new graphics card sometime later next year)

Given how badly Intel has handled the 13th / 14th gen System Instability/CPU degradation bug, I would be very cautious about Intel right now.

They denied / obfuscated that there was a problem with their CPU's degrading for 1.5 - 2.0 years.

And they still REFUSE to do a product recall.

Intel machines are my only opinion, as I use a program called Daz3d. If use graphics card for AMD machines rendering takes a lot longer. I heard about that, that is one of the reasons why I am waiting until sometime after April next year to buy the new machine.

Try the AMD machines, ALOT has changed since the last time you've tried them.

^ That is an option - but a bad one as when I do renders of images when using the daz3d program, they are quicker with nvidia graphic cards. I can use the CPU to render on it's own - but much longer. I've pretty much stayed with intel processors for my last three computers.

I tend to lean AMD for the processors at least, though at some point, I need to do an upgrade (Means a new motherboard too at this point) as there is some software I want.

Just have to do the research first:)

Update from four years ago.

I finally upgraded my PC except my GPU. It's a GTX 1050ti. It still does the job and the oh boy the GPU's are expensive

Old Build

Motherboard - PRIME B450M-A
CPU fan- Came with the Ryzen 2600
CPU- AMD Ryzen 2600
Ram- Crucial Ballistix SPORT 16GB
Power Supply- Thermaltake 600 w

With this new build i'm good for a few years!

My Current Desktop Build

Intel i7-9700 chip
MSI Z-390A-Pro Motherboard
RTX 3060 12Gb
4.5 TB of Storage (over a SSD and 2 HDD)
Corsair 64Gb DDR4 @ 4100MHz (4 x 16Gb)

What I am planning on getting some time next year
Intel Ultra Core 7 or 9 15th Generation (yet to decide)
Undecided on what type of motherboard, but will have a maximum capacity of 256Gb of RAM
7 TB of Storage
128 Gb DDR5 (with a possibility of going to 256Gb sometime in the future)
RTX 4080 16GB (some later on)

I just wanted to also ask, would my build be ok for the next couple of years?

I do have a semi decent laptop which was supposed to replace the desktop PC but I can't seem to bring myself to change it all over.

^ Seems like you'll be Ok with it for a few years. I think the weak point would be the 8gig Videocard.

I figured that would be a weak point.

My laptop is an Asus Tuf F15 with 12th gen intel CPU 64g ram and 3050 4gig laptop GPU. But here's the odd thing, it seems to out perform my desktop PC.

But as mentioned for whatever reason I just can't bring myself to embrace it as the replacement. I'll use it for a few days but always go back to the desktop machine.

Maybe it's the ram and processor helping it out? But I think you're probably also hitting a bottleneck. What are the specs of your desktop?

But I'm with you in preferring a desktop. While laptops are generally more portable, I don't have a ton of space that makes using a laptop a less comfortable option if I plan on using my PC monitor with it.
