General Computer Thread

Did you folks see the news about the new ‘Recall feature’ that’s going to be rolled out soon by Microsoft?

In a word… YIKES!

Just what I need — my computer automatically taking a screenshot every 5 seconds and storing/saving it ‘just in case’… Supposedly only on the local device (Riiiiiiiiiight, and there’s a bridge in Brooklyn for sale).

Loathsome, in a nutshell. Definitely time to switch to Linux.

Cheers,
-CM-

For what purpose, exactly? That's what I'm struggling to understand.

Yeah, init is still fine if you're not operating in a corporate environment that mandates the distro to be used. Anything recently derived via Fedora, RedHat, Suse and Centos is going to have Systemd. It functions but it's a bugger to work with (not that I've have to for several years - it might have improved). I haven't tried Mint. It's probably time I did.

For me personally Mint has been utterly reliable and so far it has been able to do everything I needed it to do, also it has kept improving with every version they made.

It will likely be a huge storage and CPU hog. Hopefully, once disabled, it will stay disabled and not be reactivated by every update so that it has to be turned off again. Besides the unwanted system overhead, it might also represent a huge security vulnerability.

The modern SteamDeck & their clones seem to miss the point.
They're too big & heavy, the control inputs generally suck.

Nintendo got it right, if your device is (≥ 1 lb), it's too heavy to be a "REAL Handheld" gaming device.

The Steam Deck & their clones should've gone "NetBook" and just told the customer to BYOC (Bring Your Own Controller) and be done with it.

I still think the steandeck is too niche. They're not willing to sell them in major retailers while you can buy most of the similar devices almost anywhere.

I was going to buy a ROG Ally but you can't get rid of some of the bloat like armory crate. I want to experiment with handhelds so I will get the Lenovo Legion Go.

The Lenovo Legion Go is a "Buggy Mess".

You might want to hold off for a year or two.

Or get a normal Slim AMD U-series Mobile LapTop.

OK that puts that off my list. I just want to try handhelds but that also let you do a full clean install without proprietary bloatware.

I posted this in the what you are playing thread but it fits better here. GN made a processor go bang
