Gene Play

If you could time travel back into the past, and meet GR as he was in the final process of creating what would become STAR TREK, what would changes, if any, would you have done in terms of technology, or story production, or even cast choices...You could only make ONE change...what would it be???

If I had money in this fantasy scenario, I'd make sure they had enough money to use the shuttlecraft in every episode instead of the transporter. The transporter was created because they didn't have the budget for transporter effects. I've always thought the transporter was way too advanced for their tech level, and downright unrealistic in the first place. It also opens a can of worms as far as the plot's concerned.

^^^How would you have made sure of that? Where would the money have come from? That's outside of the scenario proposed here, which is what you'd get Gene to change.

I'd get rid of the moronic falling out of chairs business. Either a ship has artificial gravity or it doesn't.

Obviously the money would come from the future. With inflation, your dollar would go a lot farther back then

Uh huh, and how would you plan to pass off this retro-counterfeit cash? Except for $1s, most of the bills have been redesigned and revised a few times since then.

You're trying to add the limits of realism to a fantasy scenario about traveling back and time and changing a television show. :guffaw:

More singing from Uhura!

I'd go to GR's bosses and persuade them that Gene Coon was worth holding on to at any reasonable cost including promotion to executive producer.

Gene Coon chose to leave, and IIRC, it was because he was burnt out on writing scripts. I think John Meredyth Lucas should have been hired back for year 3.

I'd suggest he give George Takei more lines and close ups so he isn't bitching about it 40 plus years later.

Nah, I'm trying to hold to the rules of the game (what would you get Gene to do). Get those cards out of your sleeve! Cheater!

I'll assume any actions not specifically forbidden by the rules is permitted until the Rulebook is updated :)

If donating to the shuttlecraft effects budget is out, then as a runner-up, I'd spur him to make some changes regarding continuity and dates of events (like the Eugenics Wars) in order to avoid the need for retconning and Olympian-gymnast levels of rationalization to make the timeline 'work out'.

Or maybe just prevent Chicago gangsters and Nazis from making their way into the scripts. Abe Lincoln can stay though.

If I'd make one change I'd get Gene to not rewrite every bloody script just so he could get a chunk of the payment for it (as Solow relates in Inside Star Trek), which ended up alienating writers who might've written for the show again, otherwise.
