Spoilers Game of Thrones: The Final Season

Yes, that was a callback to the very first episode. Other parallels that I noticed:
- Royalty arriving in Winterfell
- Young boy climbing to get a better look
- Bran and Jaime encounter to end the episode
Also:

- Arya observing the procession from afar and then not showing up to greet (in the premiere, she was almost late).

- Visiting the crypt and paying respect to Lyanna/Ned.

- Focus on just Winterfell and King's Landing with a small connection to the North with the White Walkers.

I think there were others but those stood out the most.

At the start of the episode I was like 'Why does this kid climbing the tree matter'

Me at the end of the episode when I saw what happened to said kid:

Different kid.

Sansa has become smarter than Tyrion, she is the only one who figured out Cersei could not be trusted.

The only thing that seemed a little weird to me in the first episode was Dany's reaction, or lack thereof, when finding out the Night King turned her dead dragon into his pet. I'm guessing she's thinking "who the fuck is this weird dude and how the fuck does he know about my dead dragon?"

The kid who climbed the tree was a random village boy, emulating Bran in the very first episode.

The kid who was killed was Ned Umber, who appeared earlier in the episode, sent by Jon Snow to get more troops. He first appeared in an episode early last season.

I don't see it that way.

I like The Hound, but having he and Arya have a conversation about how she left him for dead and clearly doesn't feel all that remorseful about it didn't need to be shown because it's absolutely inconsequential to the story or to either character's overall development, and she and Gendry interacted with each other in passing and have no connection otherwise.

That scene felt like it was only there because of fanservice and took up episode time that could've been devoted to something else... especially since, in terms of actual content, the episode was only 54 or 55 minutes in length despite having an 'advertised' runtime of 66 minutes.

I will ALMOST give you the Hound......it could have been cut, other than it does show she isn't sorry. AT ALL.

The Gentry scene I think laid the groundwork for Arya to be THE ONE that kills the Night King. Everyone is focused on her and Gentry when the real purpose of the scene was to foreshadow the weapon that would save the Seven Kingdoms.

Torn on parts of this one. I enjoyed most of the reunions, and it's weird when you think about it that some of these characters haven't seen each other since the pilot episode. And a lot of this thread was talking about that, wanting other reunions, etc.

But I also don't need a Reunions clip show, where we just have a social and everyone catches up on what a crazy few years it's been. 5 episodes left, a TON to cover, and this episode was a lot shorter than the advertised runtime once you take out the 'previous on' segment and the credits, plus 15 minutes of behind the scenes stuff. Was a pretty standard 40-something minutes of show. Just not enough left to be dicking around.

I know we needed a refresher since it's been off the air for almost 2 years, but we don't have even a short 10 episode season, they've only got 6. Yes, last couple are going to be much longer, so probably about 10 episodes' worth when all said and done, but it's time to get done to business. Any further reunions need to be 100% plot service and not 'nice touches' or fan service...

The scene between Gendry, Arya and The Hound is more than just a reunion clip. From it we learn

That Gendry seems to have worked out how to melt dragon glass to turn it into weapons.
The Hound has now got a much better weapon to fight wights with
Arya has designed a new weapon for herself to use

From the previews it looks like the battle with the Walkers will be done by episode 3 then 3 dealing with the Iron Throne.........no filler episodes.

I felt the same way as you when it ended... WAIT... THAT'S IT!?! WE'RE ONLY AN HOUR INTO IT!

I hadn't been keeping up with GoT news, but I thought all the S8 episodes were supposed to be more than an hour. Reading a few articles, I guess this season will have at least 2 episodes that are less than an hour... I really loved all the moments between the characters, but yeah... there's not nearly enough time to cover the touching reunions, KL, Winterfell and the great battle to come, not to mention the fallout after.

Place you bets for survivors of the battle of Winterfell.

Combatants we care about:
Jon Snow
Arya Stark
Berick Dondarian
Tormund Giantsbane
Gendry Waters
The Hound
Jamie Lannister
Brienne of Tarth
Greyworm
Jorah Mormont
Davos Seaworth
Rhaegar
Drogon

Civilians we care about:
Danerys Targaryen
Sansa Stark
Bran Stark
Missande
Samwell Tarly
Gilly & Little Sam
Varys
Tyrion Lannister

Haven't seen much about Millisandre yet this season. But, we're also sitting upon a motherlode of kingsblood.

It's interesting how Jon Snow will react to Dany's actions taken as a whole. She did some pretty brutal things, but mostly to extremely brutal people and she has also been talked down from her extreme tendencies by Tyrion. Then again Jon's not usually one for context.

Given how close Jon and Dany are, I don't get where this idea that he's ignorant of the more brutal things she has done is coming from.

Well they were also staring at him--she's the Mother of Dragons, but I wonder if they're looking at Jon as their deadbeat dad who abandoned them?
Ever have a date with a girl where her 100-pound German Shepherd stares at you while you're having sex with his mommy?
How much does Drogon weigh?

While it certainly seems the Walkers are on their way to Winterfell and a battle is imminent, I doubt it's gonna go down like that. I mean, that one is supposed to be the big fight, the fight for survival of everyone, so I'm pretty sure they'll save that one for later. As for what happens next I'd say the Night King is gonna go around Winterfell and march south. Why fight 2 dragons and a massive army that knows how to kill them when they can just avoid them and go pick up more troops for his army from unprepared southerners? And then Jon and Dany would have to make a decision whether to go save Cersei's butt after she basically abandoned them...

We literally saw he didn't know about her execution of Sam's dad and brother.

I wonder if she would do the same to Northerners that don't immediately bend the knee?

House Glover? Lyanna Mormonnt? Sansa and Arya?

Probably not but...
