Game Of Thrones Season 6 Discussion (Spoilers)

When the casting sheet for what appeared to be a young Ned Stark, Lyana etc, I assumed that the large youth described would be Robert Baratheon. I didn't see the Hodor issue coming. IIRC, in the books he was always slow-witted, so this plot point of how he turned from Willis (I assume they changed him from the book name of Walder as Walder Frey may surface this season) to Hodor could be interesting. (I don't foresee any 'What you talking about Willis?' jokes, sadly)
It would be hilarious if they do 'What you talking about Willis?' for Hodor. LOL

One thing really threw me off was that Hodor looked about the same age or older than Ned and Brandon in the flashback when Nairn is clearly 15+ years younger.

Sure we have a Mountain that is 20+ years younger than his little brother, but this is clearly a more intentional choice than casting such a specific size/look.

I guess they're not going to bother to even try to explain how he got so tall and teenaged in the - wait, how long has it been since episode 1, in-universe?
Going by the books, AGOT begins in the year 298 A.C., and Joffrey's wedding happens on New Year's Day of 300 A.C., so the first three books span less than two years. Can't say how much time passes during the events of AFFC/ADWD, but I'd say less than a year. So we're looking at roughly three years so far in total.

They had to kill Balon at some point, he was a loose end to Gendry's leeches.

I loved the scene with the dragons. Tyrion gambling his life to gain the dragons' trust.

Can't do much about a child actor aging. At least they didn't just write him out like Walt in Lost. I'm still curious if Riccon will ever factor again.

What is Littlefinger up to anyway? We haven't seen him since he gave Sansa to Ramsay. He's the only character left who could stay competitive with Ramsay in an evil contest.

Actually, I'm pretty sure each season of the show is supposed to represent roughly one year. So, considering that Isaac Hempstead-Wright grew that much since his last appearance, it's obviously quite believeable that Bran could have done the same.

That said, I really loved the scene with Tyrion and the dragons. Just one more notch in the "yep, he's definitely the third Targaryean" scorecard. And when the giant pulled a Hulk on that archer, I actually caught myself laughing out loud.

I was, however, a little disappointed that they went the predictable route with Jon's resurrection. I mean, nearly everyone who had paid attention to the story all but knew it was going to happen the moment Jon died last season, especially since Melisandre showed up only a short while prior. Just a bit bummed that they didn't try something else like a few of the other theories that were floating around. It would have been a lot more interesting to see Melisandre actually fail, and everyone to have completely given up, only to have him awaken at some other point.

Given the comment between young Ned and Benjen about "Keep your shield up, or I'll ring your bell", and their desire to get Proto-Hodor to participate in their sparring, I have a feeling young Ned might accidentally smack poor Wyllis upside the head with his practice sword, causing him to skip for the rest of his life from aphasia and turning him into One-Word Wyllie.

The last time we saw him last season was when he met with Olenna Tyrell in his brothel and provided her with ammunition to use against Cersei in the form of Lancel Lannister. It's unknown at this point whether he stayed in King's Landing or went back to the Eyrie.

The dude doing his funeral (I presume at least, since he wasn't called out as such) was another one of his brothers, Aeron; who used to be a drunk, drowned, was revived and went a little crazy somewhere in the process.
I'm assuming it's just supposed to be some generic priest, since the show loves to excise unnecessary siblings whenever possible (see: Garlan and Willas Tyrell, Arianne and Quentyn Martell)

Dragons grow to be hundreds of miles long? Did I hear that correctly?
 No. Tyrion said they once "ranged" for hundreds of miles. They do get a lot bigger, though. A LOT! I do wonder if showDrogon will ever get as big as Balerion, like right towards the end.

And is it me or did Viserion and Rhaegal look slightly emaciated? Is that their normal appearance? I know they're not eating, so there's that. I could swear I saw their neck bones.

In Season 1 when Jon Snow fights the resurrected dead dude in Castle Black, he grabs a lantern to throw at him and burns his hand in pain. Does that mean he doesn't have the Targaryean fire-proof ability that Dany has? Isn't that one of the theories?

That did happen before Dany's dragons were born, to be fair. It's strongly implied that the presence of magic in the world is strongly tied to the presence of dragons. Viserys wasn't immune to the molten gold. And several generations prior to the show one of the Targaryen kings died in a fire (this was also after the last dragon had died). So who knows.

Dany is also pure Targaryen while Jon would only be half, but I don't know if that would matter.

In the pilot episode, Dani walks naked into a scalding hot bath without even blinking. I thought this was showing us her fire-proof power from the get-go?

Denerys picks the dragon eggs off the hot coals and then her servant touches the eggs and burns her hands. Denerys was immune to fire before the dragons were born and Viserys was not, that's why when the molten gold killed him she remarked "He wasn't a dragon."

I guess we haven't seen Tyrion get burned that I remember, but it's also strongly suggested the fireproof property is something only passed down in the Targaryen line.

Sean Bean is 57, albeit relatively youthful-looking for it, Kristian Nairn will be 41 in November and Joseph Mawle, the actor who played adult Benjen is 42. So I suppose it's really Bean who throws things out of whack.

Perhaps Hodor's giant's blood keeps him young-looking?

The preview of next week's episode seems to show the Battle for the Tower of Joy and a young Ned (but older than in this scene. In the tv show, Robert's rebellion is supposed to have been 17 years before season 1 (the books have a 14 year gap). For my money, the actor as Ned at this time, while a good lookalike for Bean, looks more like he's in his 20. So arguably Bean is again the one who throws the ages out of balance.

Fwiw, I've skimmed the first book for an idea of Hodor's age. Can't really find one. He's generally referred to as a stable-boy but that's his job rather than his age.

I wondered where Ned's older brother Brandon was in this scene. Has he been mentioned in the tv show?

Yep, they mentioned he was supposed to marry Catelyn and how he died.
He probably wasn't there because they don't really need his character going forward.

^ Thanks. Yeah, I guess they don't really need him but it would've been nice to see Ned's entire immediate family, especially as this scene was meant to mirror season 1 episode 1, with all the current generation of Starks together.

What is up with the current lord Karstark? The way his scene played out, it look like he wasn't at all surprised by Ramsey killing Roose. Did Ramsey tell him he was going to kill his father if the baby is a boy? I wonder what is the payoff here. They wouldn't have had the character there if it wasn't important later.

Jon Snow's wolf had a reaction just after he died and just before he came back. Does the wolf have the ability to sense these stuff, or did Jon transfer his katra into the wolf as many speculated.

I just finished the novels over Christmas vacation a few months ago. Even in the books, I think the passage of time should be longer than is outlined in official sources. I am perfectly happy believing that five years have passed in story.

As for the episode, it was by far my favorite since some time in season four. I am glad that they left out Dany because her story often breaks up the pacing. I liked the way the episode focused on multiple stories in individual geographic locations. Every scene was very well done, but I loved Tyrion freeing the dragons and the great rapport that seemed to develop between them. I'm glad Jon is back but what I really liked there was the scene between Davos and Melissandre--nicely written and shows great character development.

Most of all I like what the writers are doing with Bran. We know he is going to play an important part in current events but at the moment his abilities are going to be a great way to give us the full history of events without having to just randomly incorporate flashbacks.
