Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

What we do know about their relationship from the book at all isn't Romeo and Juliet at all.

Her father (working for Lannister interested) essentially sent her to sleep with him so that he would be forced to marry her or besmirch his father's infamous honor, which opens the door to a Lannister/Frey alliance.

Really?
I always assumed she just played damsel when Robb took the castle, and stupid, teenager Robb fell for it. I did catch her parents siding away from Robb right when the Red Wedding came around, but I didn't get the vibe that Jeyne was out to hurt Robb. With all that fuss of "what if she's pregnant" and such...

She herself didn't know it was a setup, she thought her family was trying to make her a Queen. Mind you, the "Jeyne" Jaime sees after the Red Wedding is described very differently from the Jeyne before it, so it is possible she has been swapped and Robb's heir yet lives, aided by some in her family who had genuinely turned to the North's side. Either that or Jaime just has a very skewed perspective.

After this week's episode I really don't know who's head I want to see atop a pike more - Theon's or Joffrey's. What a pair of obnoxious twats.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

Joffrey at least doesn't know any better, being born evil. But Theon knows better and went to the Dark Side anyway

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

An excellent episode! Lots of tension all around.

- Arya and Twyin's scenes are outstanding additions. They serve to deepen Tywin as a character and give Charles Dance more of a chance to shine than a strictly faithful adaptation would have done. Jaqen's reaction to Arya's frantic demand that her second choice be killed immediately was a hoot.

- Dany's eyes increasingly shine with a touch of madness when she talks about claiming the Iron Throne. Nice job by Emilia Clarke there.

- More footage for the Joffrey gets slapped montage - always a good thing!

- Sansa being threatened with gang rape was intense (and a surpise given that they toned down her humiliation at Joffrey's hands a few episodes ago in comparison to the book) and her rescue by the Hound was awesome.

- Ser Rodrik went out with honor (really nice moment when he told Bran he, Rodrik, would see Ned again now), and Theon completely lacks honor. Osha's loyalty to Bran is endearing.

- So Jon and company walk along with their black outfits sticking out like sore thumbs against the white landscape and Jon shouts out to Ghost - not exactly masters of stealth, are they?

- Rose Leslie is great as Ygritte!

The book actually has Half-Hand chastising Jon for calling out to Ghost. Sound in that terrain bounces off mountains and travels for miles, alerting the Wildlings of their presence. They also say that it's best to move during the night and that the daytime is not their friend. This makes sense on several levels, since movement will keep them warm on what would be an otherwise killing sub-freezing night if asleep. They can then sleep during the day (and post sentries) in relative warmth without the need to make a fire and be noticed. All this, plus the obvious reason you mentioned - they're all wearing black. The whole raid on the Wildling "camp" where they find Ygritte was all originally done at night. The TV adaptation fell considerably short on these things, yes.

Oh, the other major difference of that scene - in the book, Jon couldn't bring himself to kill Ygritte and let her escape, as opposed to what we saw where she hit his knee and started a chase, exploiting his hesitation. In that case, I think the TV version made a little more sense.

I'm sure that will happen in the next episode (what happened in the book), so please be careful with spoilers. The show may do things differently but will usually end up in a similar spot.

Thats' not really a spoiler. What 137 did was simply state a change from the book. What's done is done. They changed that scene. If they add something similar to it in the next episode then it doesn't change anything since they have already deviated from the book.

I understand not wanting to spoil people, but it's a tad ridiculous to ban pointing out deviations from the book if the scene has already happened.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

How do you know it has "already happened"? Jon may simply let her go in the next episode. (now that the cat is out of the bag). Scenes that appear different may only be additional material until the 'book scene' does in fact occurr. We'll just have to wait and see.

Just use common sense and spoiler tag things that was different BUT could still happen.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

So we shouldn't talk about ANYTHING that is different, in case they come back to it at a later date? Might as well lock the threads, then...

The previews have already shown us more than you claim he spoiled...

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

excellent episode
I'm most of the way through Storm of Swords and yowza! I really can't wait for Season 3!

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

Perhaps just a mention that something wasn't in the book, or that it was different, w/o saying what the other version was? That's what I tell friends who ware watching the show w/o having read the books -- things like "Well that happened in the book but a different person did it", etc.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

Without going into details, Arya's kills courtesy of Jaqen have been different to the book so far.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

^ Yeah, I'm about 3/4 of the way into ACOK now and am surprised how differently the Arya stories are unfolding in each medium.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

I'm not reading the books so they don't influence my watching at all. I DON'T want to have those "oh that's different" moments, I just want to watch the show.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

Oh, Theon. You threw away a life of respect, honor and dignity for a group of idiots who continually mock you, ignore you and make an example of you just to show everyone how incompetent you are. And for what? So you can Captain a ship called the sea-bi*** with a crew who say they don't need you? And here you are, the Stark's at your mercy, and you dare bring up the fact that they killed your brothers? News flash, when your home starts a war and your brothers choose to fight in it, you've got to anticipate that those you are attacking will defend themselves and may in fact kill your brothers. It's called casualties of war. It's nothing personal, unlike what you're doing.

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

I'm not reading the books so they don't influence my watching at all. I DON'T want to have those "oh that's different" moments, I just want to watch the show.

That was initially my view and I by and large don't read much fantasy anyway. However, I picked up the first novel in the series a week or two in my library and, on a whim, took it home. I was pretty sure I'd put it down after a few chapters. After all, it was free, so nothing ventured, nothing gained and nothing lost.

But nope, I was hooked and as soon as I'd read it, I went out and got the second in the series. I happened to get it in the library again (yaaay!) but was fully prepared to buy or download it if I couldn't. I'm 3/4 through it and, once I've read the other 2 books I got in the library, will go and get book 3.

I've no difficulty with the books and series being different, after all, it means one isn't 'spoiling' me for the other. They're two different media after all and two different takes on the story.

At the same time, by no means is it essential to read the book to enjoy the series and your approach is equally valid!

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

I tend to reverse that, and not see movies until I've read the books if possible...

Re: Game of Thrones 2.6 - "The Old Gods and the New" - Rate and discus

I read the books for two reasons.

First, to avoid being spoiled when watching the series. I knew a TV show based on this book series was in the works (acutally, I remember when they were casting over here, vaguely) and I knew the one sure way for people to not casually throw that references like say Ned Stark being a secret Dragon was for me to already know that he was one of the Nine Secret Dragons of Thule.

The other reason was I'd been hearing since forever that the books were pretty good. I hear this about a lot of books, but time being what it is I usually put them on the back burner and then never think about them again. A TV series in the works was finally the impetus I needed to knuckle down and try the books (looking at you, Revelation Space, get televised already) - and even if the TV show sucked, hopefully the books would live up to their reputation.

I wound up finishing A Feast for Crows two days before the first episode of GoT aired on Sky Atlantic... which was good timing indeed.

And now I'm midway through American Gods, which also has a HBO show in the works last I checked...
