They've already said that they will kill off a character in the first season that doesn't die in the books until book three. I assume that's what Martin is referring to, and Venardhi's theory that it's Hoster seems pretty solid - it could be a throwaway line in one of the last two episodes.

I don't think the slight difference in Sansa's story is that important, really. She's still just as taken with Joffrey and the Lannisters as she was in the novel.

I think it's important. That act, more than anything else, poisoned a lot of readers against Sansa, many to the extent that the character never recovered from it in their eyes. I suspect the producers of the show were worried the same might happen with the audience.

It did? I don't think I minded as much as other readers, then. It was a thoughtless, stupid and selfish action, but it wasn't malicious. She's a child in a temper tantrum, for god's sake.

Besides, she pays a great deal for her misjudgement.

Martin doesn't exactly get to 'give his consent' for changes. They consult him occasionally on things that might have long-lasting effects but for the most part he has no more say than any of the other writers. His producer title is an honorary one.

Except of course as you know he wrote the episode in question.

And he could have easily been rewritten by the showrunners. That's a common thing.

Hodor.

Hodor, hodor hodor hodor, hodor, hodor. Hodor? Hodor, hodor!

Hodor hodor hodor.

Did they leave in the bit where Old Nan tells either Brann, Robb or Catelyn, that that isn't actually his name? I just read that bit yesterday and thought that it was kinda funny since nobody ever seems to refer to him as anything but Hodor.

Says who?
So sayeth Martin.

They pick his thoughts on various bits like casting and changes here and there, but he doesn't actually have any control over the production. His involvement is as much for the goodwill it grants them from the fans as it is for anything else.

Which, in fairness, is more than most authors get and has probably helped keep them on a straighter path. Never doubt that if he wanted to throw a fit over their changes he wouldn't lose even his advisory role faster than Bronn would slit your throat for a glass of ale.
