Great episode.

i cannot wait for Drogo to come to the land of the Lannisters.

I wonder how the Dothraki would deal with armored warriors.

After looking at that artwork... I like the TV Greatjon better.

Great episode.
I miss seeing Ned/Boromir in action. It feels like his role is comming to an end. And where was Jaime Lannistar during the entire episode?

He's leading an army against the Riverlands, the homeland of Catelyn. The episode mentions that when Tyrion shows up to meet Tywin, and later when Robb is discussing his options with his bannermen - he can strike at Tywin's army, gathering in Lannister territory, or Jaime's army, which is besieging Riverrun, the main fortress of the Riverlands.

Who was this guy, and why was he naked and going to a secret tree?
He's a stableboy, but since Bran became a cripple he's been the guy carrying him around. Bran wants to go to the tree? Hodor brings him to the tree.

And for some reason the only word he says is Hodor.

From Hibberd's EW recap:
Meanwhile Bran is in his room when all of a sudden some child just wanders into our scene and started talking to him. This is the youngest Stark kid, Rickon, who I noted in my first Thrones recap is "like the Maggie Simpson of the Starks." Suddenly Rickon takes out his pacifier and spouts ominous pessimism about Robb's chances, as if he knows anything. Dude, go back to starring in Tiny Starks or Winterfells whatever TV show you're in and let the grown-ups handle this. We're in Thrones Episode 8, it's too late to pretend you're part of our plot.
:guffaw:

Oh is THAT who that was? My wife and I looked at each other when Robb told Bran to look after his younger brother and said, "He has a younger brother? I though HE was the younger brother!"

An excellent episode that continued to ramp up the palpable sense of tension and menace as the season draws near to a close. Some thoughts:

- Robb came off very well in this episode. I think he's going to make more of an impact in the TV series than in the books (where he's hobbled by being one of the non-POV characters).

- The Greatjon was, well, great.

- Syrio taking on the Lannister men and allowing Ayra to escape was all kinds of awesome.

- I agree with those who found the scene where Arya kills the boy to be the one weak spot in the episode. It was poorly shot and edited and the boy's acting was weak. Maisie was great as Arya in her earlier scene with Syrio, though.

- Shagga and pals looked suitably rough and made amusing foils for Tyrion.

- Drogo's fight was epic and Dany continues to grow in strength by standing against long-held Dothraki customs she finds abbhorent.

- Sansa has been softened by the removal of a key scene in the book.

- Rickon speaks!

IIRC we don't actually learn that Sansa spilled the beans until the next book. But she is a little naive at this point and still in love with the whole idea of knights in shining armor and her beloved prince.

Yup first book, just read it yesterday. Trying to read along with the show and fill in the cracks. Amazing how many word for word parts are being used in this series.

absolutely.
some parts of the book seem like I've read them before, but that's because I watched it on the show

Since Martin himself is writing and Producing for this series, it was with his consent. Maybe he had a change of heart with Sansa's naivete over the years.

Martin doesn't exactly get to 'give his consent' for changes. They consult him occasionally on things that might have long-lasting effects but for the most part he has no more say than any of the other writers. His producer title is an honorary one.

I believe more than once he's commented at conventions and interviews about the reaction fans have towards Sansa so he may be in a way somewhat 'retconning it' through the tv show.

Since basically because she was a spoiled little princess crying to Cersei that Ned wanted to take her and Arya back to Winterfell and not lether marry Prince Joffrey and how she so loved Joffrey and wanted to be Queen someday that Cersei acted and killed almost every single member of the Winterfell party who were in King's Landing.

Wow so apparently GRRM says
there's a rather large change in the show that book readers won't expect since it didn't happen in the books till book three.

I'm guessing that is just Hoster's death or some other such comparatively minor event to help clear out unnecessary material from later seasons.

As far as I understood from the discussions on Westeros.org and Winter-Is-Coming, some minor male character who is supposed to die in the third book, dies in the first season, and it is supposed to cut material from the third book. Hoster seems logical, it will cut approximately half of Catelyn's chapters from the third book, where all she does is looking at her dying father.
