"G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra" trailer released

I got a VERY bad feeling once the PC started with the team being "international", but I thought "this can still work"...I saw the costuming and thought..."not that great, but it could still work".

I saw the trailer and said: WTF is this? Some big budget low-class rip-off of Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future?

GI Joe is a military/action-adventure piece, not a psudeo-superhero/sci fantasy piece (the Cobra-La elements of the Movie notwithstanding).

This PoS will NOT get my money, not in the theatre nor in on DVD!

Just say "H*** NO!" to "Feaux Joe"!

Cobra-La was hardly the beginning of the fantasy element. The original TV show included everything from a gigantic blob eating everything in its path to Synthoids. Let's also not forget that everyone fired lasers and not conventional weaponry on the battlefield. Take other elements like Zartan's super perfect disguises, the Weather Dominator and the way Serpentor was created and I think it's fair to say G.I. Joe was "scifi" long before this movie was a twinkle in anyone's eye.

Oh, and let's not forget guys like Iguanus: http://www.yojoe.com/action/01/iguanus.shtml

I'm saying, what somebody shoulda done when they saw they were making "Batman: Army Men" and not actually GIJOE was go to Larry and say: "Larry, we obviously have no idea what we're doing with the material and you wrote it by your damn self for over a decade so we were wondering if you could bang out something plausible so we don't look like complete a--wipes in the eyes of the fans?"

But, but this is Hollywood, so what they actually said to Hama was: "Larry, you wrote comicbooks. Your very best idea is inferior to our worst idea because we write Movies. You and the "fans" *snicker* should fall down on your knees and thank God that we, the movie makers, have finally decided to do GI Joe right. Here's some money, please go away."

And the press release: "Larry Hama is a big part of GI Joe history. We even brought him down to the offices to talk Joe for a while."

Looks fine to me - the sort of cheesy summer blockbuster I'd expect from a film based on dolls.

Speaking of Baroness, lets pause and give thanks for her character....lol.
YES.

Larry Hama was involved as a consultant (he took out Snake Eyes' one line for a start).

look up the review of the old draft on Latinoreview, the villain had some really stupid-ass name and wasn't even a Cobra...or, an ARAH Cobra character...

Well, consultant don't mean wrote.

I'm just sayin'.

And NX, that's exactly what i thought when i heard they were sticking with the international nonsense. You want international, go license Rainbow Six!

I agree. Larry Hama's involvement gives me hope that this won't be a total crapfest, since he's more or less the only one who ever really 'got it' and treated these characters with realistic respect. Hopefully he had more control and authority to say 'No, that's stupid' than it appears and I suspect he actually did.

Larry Hama should 'get it' with GI Joe, as well as writing the bloody comic he invented the characterisations of the Joes and Cobras by writing the filecards and based it on his own US Army experiences as well as his planned 'Fury Force' comic for Marvel...

Exactly what I meant. ;)

His approach to treat these like real-life characters was the only semblance of good characterization they ever got, and his firsthand Army experience was invaluable.

stretched page much?

i'm going to say what i said elsewhere: as yet, we don't know how much of an international flavour the Joes have. sure, Heavy Duty is played by an African-Brit, Snake Eyes by a Brit, Cover Girl by a Czech and Breaker by a French-Arab, but, Snake Eyes is apparently still an all-American character and we don't know how much the actors' ethnicity and nationality are playing into their characters. If Cover Girl is Hawk's aide (as was reported, (is she the blonde when Hawk says 'Make the call'?)) she maybe an American character, still as a US Army soldier. HD and Breaker could be French or Morroccan or British, or they could be Americans. we simply don't know.

personally, I'll be happy to see the movie irrespective of a Brit's presence on the team, but if HD is British, then Yay. i always thought Cobra must've been operating outside of America if they're really 'a ruthless terrorist organisation bent on world domination'. or were they planning on starting with America and then conquering everyone else after?

Wasn't stretched on mine, in fact it should have been auto resized to 800x600...
