Here's a question that has nothing to do with like or dislike of the film:

Now that it's arrived and it depicts a new continuity, and with sequels already planned, should this new interpretation of Trek have its own forum (as in Trek: New Age or something to that effect) or should it soon be relegated to the Movies forum like any other Trek film?

For myself I think that since it's intended as a restart with its own continuity then it should be taken as a new version of Trek.

Anyone else?

Like it or Dislike it, its a Star Trek movie, it belongs in the movies forum. The real question is what the hell do they call the forum for the next film? Star Trek XII? Star Trek 2?

Nah, this movie and its subsequent sequels deserve a section of thier very own. Relgating discussion of the new movie to the generic 'Movies' sub-forum would only serve to overwhelm discussion of the Trek back-catalog with threads about the new movie.

Sub-forum of movies maybe? At least for that time between it not having its own forum at the top of the list and when we finally run out of arguments and it can just be the next movie in the sequence.

It doesn't need a number, and it probably won't for this very reason. Like The Dark Knight wasn't called Batman 12 or 2, just Batman. The studio can't commit to our silly debates.

Where's the fun in that? I was looking forward to the endless screams of "THIS IS STAR TREK 12!!!" "OMG! ITS STAR TREK 2!!CANNON!!?!", if you're just going to be all sensible about it then they shouldn't even get a forum.

If we all resolved to be sensible about everything 90 percent of what's posted in the forums here at TrekBBS never would be.

Hell, and a good 75% of everything on the Internet.

That will still happen. If they put a specific number, they close the debate. Those really pissed may shout but in vain. Ambiguity is much more fun: we keep arguing over and over, and over, and over, and over, and over,
and over,
and...

than take a ST movie marathon break

and over,
and over,
and...

Regardless of how you take the film, in all aspects, it does mark the beginning of a new direction by the studio and the franchise, so I would think that all Abrams-related Trek material should have it's own forum.

I don't think the Abramsverse needs to be segregated, but the Trek XI forum needs to remain either until there is a need for an XII forum or discussion here dies down to a point that it won't swamp the movies forum.

There is the point, made above, that if this is just dumped into the Trek Movie forum it will push all other discussion on to the second and third pages immediately. At best.

Of course, maybe that's what should happen. Discussion forums are driven by current discussion.

Yes, a Trek re-boot forum would be warranted I think, maybe as a sub-forum in the movies forum though.

What about having Three sub forums in the Movies Forum
Original Series Movies
TNG Movies
JJ Universe Movies

That way, the movies would have their own forums, and not be overwriting unintended discussions. However, it would keep everything together within the Overall Movies Forum.

I think the alternate universe Trek deserves its own forum. It's essentially a new film series so it should be treated separately.

I know we're good at this - but is there really a forum's worth of discussion to be had between now and the release of New Trek 2: McCoy's Holiday on Risa

That sounds good - making XI a sub-forum of the Movies forum without having he others in a sub-forum seems unbalanced.
