Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Fury Road is one of my fav movies of all time. It blew me away when I first saw it. Every trailer got me more excited.

This just isn't hitting the same. I think mostly because it looks so similar to Fury Road. Fury Road was so unique. That uniqueness was a big reason it had so much impact.

I'm sure this will be entertaining, but it just looks like more Fury Road. And I think that's why I'm not getting so excited over it. I am going to go see it.

I'm the opposite, the fact that it is so similar to Fury Road is what has me so excited for it. I've been dying for more of that since Fury Road came out and I'm very happy we're finally getting it.

George Miller's trailer breakdown with EW.com
I think the biggest new information is who the narrator at the end was, the History Man, who it sounds like possibly narrates the whole movie. He also reveals that the movie will mostly cover Furiousa's life from ages 10 to 26, with a little bit at age 28.
Furiousa's mother was played by Charlee Frasier, which is a bit information I hadn't come across before.

The film premiers at Cannes this weekend before opening in many markets including Australia, North America and most of Europe next week.

Got a ticket myself to see it on Wednesday.

Just got back from a showing.

It's one of the best movies I've seen where I have zero desire to see it again. Fury Road is a hope-filled romp compared to this one.

Miller's history as an ER doctor seeing the pointlessness of human suffering and death really comes through – the trailers touch on it a little, but they undersell how much it's the explicit theme of the move.
Characters survive chances for meaningful sacrifice only to be injured or die in brutal and meaningless ways later. Lest you think it's accidental, Hemsworth gets a speech near the end that underlines the point.

The movie does suffer from basically being Fury Road, part 1. It feels incomplete, as if it needs the other movie to provide some closure. Unfortunately it's just a prequel, so we don't get any of that.

Ouch. It's definitely starting to look like the studios are going to really need to reevaluate how they handle these kind of big blockbuster movies.

In this growing age of "I'll see it when it hits streaming," they really should.

'Fall Guy' has been out three weeks and they brought forward its VOD release date by ten days - you can watch it this weekend at home..

Which the wife and I did yesterday – insanely, it's still playing at our local theater.

Shows how much confidence the studios had for the movie. They immediately pressed the abandon ship button as soon as projections fell short and put it on VOD to recoup losses.

If this were a Tom Cruise backed moved he'd keep the movie in theaters for at least 4 months before waiting 6 more months to release on VOD. This sort of tactic would not fly well with him.

Wow, shocked at how this underperformed... or is even a flat-out bomb at this point.

Seeing how it took decades to get 'Fury Road' made, and even as well-received as that was, it took roughly a decade for Furiosa... I'd guess that this is the last we'll see of the world of 'Mad Max' from George Miller. :(

I'm seeing a lot of armchair quarterbacks saying 'Chris Hemsworth can't put butts in seats', or 'Anna Taylor Joy can't put butts in seats' out there in forums and YouTube and I don't think that this is the reason the movie underperforming.

I think it's a prequel to a movie and a character that didn't need one.

I mean the last Mission Impossible movie came out digitally/home video in October 2023 after having only arrived in theaters in July of that year. Top Gun maverick released digitally in August 2022 after a May 2022 theatrical date, so only three months, although it took until early November for the physical home video release.

I don't know how long either movie stayed in theaters, they might have still been there when their digital releases happened, but both of Cruise's last two big movies were watchable at home within three months of showing up in the movie theater. Thats a lot longer then Fall Guy obviously, and longer then the 45 day window a lot of places go with nowadays, but three months really isn't that long a time to wait for a movie.

She might not have "needed" one, but she was the big breakout character of Fury Road, so I can see why they thought there would be an appeal there.

If that's the case, then I would have gone with George Miller's suggestion during a Fury Road Q&A about the fate of Furiosa in that she would have wound up just as bad or worse than Immortan Joe once the water ran out.

A wonderful prequel movie. Like absolutely perfect as a prequel.

That said, it isn't close to being as good as Fury Road was. And that's okay because it elevates it in every way rather than trying to eclipse it which a lot of prequels make a huge mistake trying. I came out of the movie wanting to watch Fury Road again in a good way.

I'm not surprised to see the movie underperform either, the first one had legs but opened very poorly and had a lot of repeat viewings I have no doubt. This won't have those legs for various reasons - ticket prices for one. I am surprised it ever got greenlit.
