It would make sense to make the new character female, since they just got rid of one female cast member, and probably wanted to keep the same gender balance.
Nah, the Captain's Table is a mysterious bar that just happens to have starship captains hanging out; the books are just our favorite captains telling their stories.Isn't that basically part of the premise behind the Captain's Table series of books? (Haven't read them myself.)Hmmm, they could of had all the characters from all the series, including TOS and ENT at the wedding reception seated at various tables, talking in the crowd of guests ...
... and then not explained how they were there.

In this picture he looks just like Gareth Hunt, who played Mike Gambit on The New Avengers. Different hair, of course.
I'm surprised to hear that Sir Patrick Stewart was expected to wear a toupée, when he'd previously found notoriety from starring in DUNE and in EXCALIBUR without having worn one. Stewart was proud and vital. It would've been laughable to have him suddenly sporting a lush mane, out of a clear, blue sky ...

Nicely and concisely put!

I just saw that scene a couple of minutes ago!One of the worst looking hairpieces Patrick had was that one he wore in Beverly's flashback of viewing Jack's corpse ("Violations"?). I hope that wasn't his own.
And yeah, Patrick was a virtual unknown to American audiences in 1987, TNG put him on the map. Only LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton were names at the time.
Stewart looks like Ben Affleck in this picture,
He must have forgotten about Code Name: Emerald, because he told his first con audience (Denver Star Trek Convention/Star Fest, 1988) that before appearing in TNG he had "done four films; of course three of them were Excalibur,Lifeforce, and Dune."And yeah, Patrick was a virtual unknown to American audiences in 1987, TNG put him on the map.

It's fun spotting him as Dr. Armstrong in Lifeforce, which he said he did only because he needed new windows for his house. He also describes it as his first screen kiss, though it was with Steve Railsback.
He has a small part in 1985's Code Name: Emerald, playing a military colonel who does some plot exposition for hero Ed Harris.
