What Fuller wanted really wasn’t the mirror universe anymore, just another parallel universe where characters are slightly different.

Everything I hear of Fuller sounds 100x times more interesting than what we got back then. But at the same time crazily unfinished and unrefined!

Like - this guy is still spitballing basic concepts around, at a time where you need to have made economic decisions about which sets to build and how to split up writing duties for your story arc.

I really think Fuller would have needed a boss telling him - follow the Trek rules ("canon" or "reboot"), then go nuts within them. That would have taken a lot of the worldbuilding problems away from him.

But since nobody, especially the higher ups, had a clear vision weather they made a sequel, a prequel, a reboot or a reimagining - all these little intricacies and neat concepts got lost in the shuffle.

I love ENT's "In a mirror darkly, part II" for it's sheer (intentional!) absurdity.

It helps that is very self-aware about what it is - a fun ride, not a deep character study - and that alternate title sequence is just fantastic.

DIS' mirror arc would have immensely improved from either 1) more self-awareness or 2) more gray tones and nuances like TOS.
What they did - having cartoonish-ly evil badguys(-girls?) in leather-clad outfits - works IMO much better with a certain level of camp and scenery-chewing like an inferiourity-complex-driven Scott Bakula amping it up to 11.

Yeah, it's not mirror universe, because it sounds like it stems directly from Burnham actually killing her captain and attacking the Klingons first. The mirror universe differences go way back in time for humans.

A proper TOS style mirror episode should have Mirror Burnham be the one who did not want to attack the Klingons first because her Vulcan upbringing influenced her properly. She decides to kill Georgiou who wants to attack the Klingons, Burnham fails, and Georgiou attacks the Klingons, but the ship is destroyed in the battle.

Burnham's failure to kill her captain is a punishable offense so she is sent off to prison to do hard labor. If the ship survived Burnham would have been thrown in an agonizer booth. Everyone hates Burnham because she was too weak to perform a proper assassination and avert the war they weren't ready for. As a result she becomes less outwardly emotional except for anger and disgust, and her advice turns amoral.

Sound like more of a "Yesterday's Enterprise"/TNG difference than Prime/Mirror.

I enjoyed Disco's use of the Mirror Universe, it was like those 80's Mirror Universe Saga comics come to life.

I actually like DSC’s Mirror universe depiction better than any depiction of it before, other than the original TOS episode. But I think it would have worked better post-TOS rather than pre-TOS. Between the uniforms, technology, losing the Emperor and just the knowledge of the existence of this universe before Kirk & Spock discovered it in ‘Mirror Mirror,’ it just doesn’t work for me.

But back on topic: I think the original idea about the alternative universe being created from Burnham’s actions would have been far more interesting than the Mirror universe. For one thing, we wouldn’t have had the cop-out of Lorca being from there rather than just being a fucked-up regular human.

Oh, and MU Georgiou as well. I hope she gets what's coming to her eventually.

What struck me about them was how cheap they looked. Compared with the elaborate, 3D printed Klingon costumes from the start of the season – including the Torchbearer spacesuit that saw hardly any screen time – they seemed very simplisitc. Some of the details looked like they had been cut out by hand and glued together. I guess Fuller really did blow most of the budget on the initial episodes.

Would that have come with lower expectations from us fans? We had pretty good ideas what the MU should be like, whether we liked what we saw before or not.

I'm glad Fuller got the boot. If not for how the MU played out in ST: D - we'd never have gotten Michelle Yeoh as the 'Empress' - and she was a joy to watch in that role, and I'm still looking forward to her headlining a "Section 31" series.

^^ She has done amazingly in that role, but that could've also been achieved by taking the actual Georgiou and having the war give her some trauma that turns her on her head, but since she's such a revered Captain, they can't just retire her, so they put her onto special missions.

I just really hated the Discovery mirror episodes. I'm not a mirror universe fan period really. If we are also out killing each other to get ahead, how do we continue to survive as a species?
