Friendship Outside of the BBS

So, I'm pretty much an out there, heart on my sleeve kind of person. And when i hit it off with someone on a site such as this, i tend to like to go the next step which is emailing or talking via telephone with the person. I have made a few friendships here that have been simply awesome, and have spoken to a small number of BBS'ers by phone. So far, these friendships have been absolutely wonderful!

The truth is, i have a lot more in common with so many people here on the BBS than i do with the friends i have in real life. BBSers tend to "get me" a lot more than real life friends do.

Have you gone the next step with anyone here on the BBS or elsewhere? I'm not necessarily talking about dating (but if you have, let's hear about it, without naming names unless it's mutually agreed upon). I know there have been a couple of marriages that have come out of the BBS. But, have you taken your PMs with someone here further? Emailed anyone? Called anyone? Gotten together for a playdate with anyone?

Please.... only mutually agreed upon relationships/friendships and no stalking incidents please! Inquiring minds want to know!

*******EDIT TO ADD: ok, just thought of this: is there someone you'd LIKE to contact outside of the BBS but are afraid to? (Again, no names please). And if so, WHY are you afraid to?

Yes, I have. I have spoken with several members by phone, some by email, I have met one in person, and hope to meet more at the upcoming convention in Chicago. I tend to form fast but lasting relationships with people, even over the internet. :D

I've PM'd with several people, e-mailed with a few, and had one phone call with one TBBSer. I'm pretty shy in RL plus I have some concerns, so while I'd like to meet some TBBSers I'm not sure it will ever happen.

Timby and I are friends outside the BBS. It made sense to us when we lived 10 miles apart. We've caroused about town several times.

mimic and I are Facebook friends, but we don't interact beyond the BBS and the occasional Facebook post.

Besides that I've not had opportunity to make a BBS friend outside the BBS.

I've PMd a couple people on the board, and have one as a FB friend (whose status updates I always look forward to reading). Beyond that, I don't know. I'd be open to an area meet-up unless it was someone who really annoyed me, but I doubt I'd initiate it.

I usually keep my life highly compartmentalized. Work is work, fun is fun, and the Internet is the Internet. I don't like mixing things. It tends to get complicated. Plus, I live in Italy, and I'm not sure of my spoken English enough to keep up with a long phone call, especially without body language and facial expressions. I can't make myself clear in English without waving furiously my hands!

I haven't been on TBBS long enough to really get to know anyone... There are some people from other forums that I follow on Twitter, or are Facebook friends. (Although I'm not allowed to use it... D:< )

EDIT: Oh, and to Randi's edit: There is someone on another BBS that I want to contact. Why not? Age difference. ;)

I'm just here to bitch about sci-fi plot holes and the like, not to make friends. I guess I could see how it would work, people with common interests, etc... but no, I don't really want to meet any of you people.

I've met and hung out with one person I first met on this board. I've spoken to one other on the phone, and we've exchanged letters and frequently IM each other too. That's about it as far as I know. Most of the people I would have wanted to meet in real life have moved on from the board.

Well Yeoman Randi doesn't know this but I plan to meet her sometime in the next year if I can. I know we would end up having way more fun than we should. And a certain Trek-Bear loving Mister has to come too. :bolian: We can all cuddle together and watch "Six Feet Under".

And Randi... if your son happens to be there I can't promise I won't kidnap him. You may think I am joking but I am not. I think he is cuter than a basket of puppies.

But to be honest, I think it would be awesome to meet all of you. I am a social person so meeting new folks is always a lark! I am just not sure you would want to meet me though. I am a bit strange even for this crowd. But specifically I would like to meet AdAstra. After all he is in my iHusband and it would only be right. I might even want to marry him for real. :alienblush: (I just hope I can get there in time to talk him out of that pink rug.)

And there is someone secret I would like to meet too. He and I would go drinking... in Japan.

I've made several friends in real life thanks to this board, including three of my best friends and current roommate. I like to think I've established strong ties and friendships with several other BBSers I've interacted with over the years, here, on Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, etc. and would hope said friendships would continue to blossom were we ever to meet in real life.

That said, I've also been burned, badly, by some people who I placed a lot of faith and a lot of trust in over the years. Lesson learned.

E-mail, yes. However, being on a message board provides no grounds for trust, which is necessary for anything more. The only case where I post on a site with people I know IRL, I met them IRL first.

I disagree, I think enough trust can be built to meet someone IRL.
