The problem with the Mirror Universe episodes is that we really shouldn't see alternative versions of the same characters at all. Pick a starting point in the time line. Because of the differences, as time goes on, there will be so many changes that it's highly unlikely that the same characters will end up on the same ship experiencing similar situations as their prime counterparts. Granted, Discovery takes place before Kirk's encounter so we can let that slide, but by the time of DS9, I don't see how there would be any similarities at all between the MU and prime time lines. Sort of like a cosmic butterfly effect.

Yeah this is what I mean by the concept of continuity being essentially meaningless in the mirror universe. Just like the Kelvin incident, changes should have massive ramifications, but clearly don't. The same people seem fated to end up on the same ships/stations regardless of what's gone before.

The Mirror Universe hasn't been a setting for interesting storytelling since "Mirror, Mirror," period. Even the "In a Mirror, Darkly" episodes, which at least were relatively novel, were still dragged down by all the fanwank in them.

I liked the Mirror universe well enough, but I don't need to revisit it again.

I disagree. It would be interesting to see the legacy of Empress Sato.

And since Hoshi died on Tarsus IV, it would make an interesting story.

Before I joined the TrekBBS I always thought the Deep Space Nine mirror universe episodes surely must be fan favorites. I certainly loved episodes like “Crossover”, “Through The Looking Glass” and “Shattered Mirror” – especially as a kid. Sure, they are not more than harmless, silly fun, less a serious look at the concept of an alternative universe and more a chance to see our heroes in completely different roles, but as that they are brilliant.

But what do you know, I was always wrong. They actually suck.

(at least Enterprise set its mediocre MU episode completely in that universe, so there was no issue of the normal universe meeting the MU too early).

For all we know, Discovery could do the same.

I was hoping Discovery would do the MU at some point. Season 1 seems like it could be early, but I could also see it working well. I hold DS9's MU episodes in higher regard than most seem to -- "Crossover" and "Shattered Mirror" are legitimately good, and "Though The Looking Glass" and "Resurrection" are solid. "Emperor's New Cloak" is just such an awful, disastrous ending to the arc, it retroactively poisons the whole thing.

Definitely very much disagree, the DS9 MU episodes were kinda silly fun, In A Mirror Darkly was great, and the MU series that started with Glass Empires and ended with Rise Like Lions is one of my favorite Trek book series. The Sorrows of Empire and Rise Like Lions are fucking amazing.

There is a novella and a short story the series I mentioned above that cover some of Hoshi's time as Empress.
The novella, Age of the Empress, which was co-written by the writer of IMAD, is in the Glass Empires collection, and the sequel short story, Nobunaga, is in Shards and Shadows.
