When re-watching DS9 and TOS - I skip them. They are ok the first time, but its not a universe I have any interest in.

Hm, much like with Section 31, I never had a problem with the Mirror Universe episodes (well, maybe “In A Mirror, Darkly”), but I don't feel it belongs in Discovery (yet) and kind of wish they would try to do their own thing now. Of course this could end up being awesome, and I won't complain then, but in concept I could really do without the Mirror Universe on the show.
What's interesting about this, if it turns out to be correct, is that someone in another thread here noticed that it actually looks like the dedication plaque on the bridge says “I.S.S. Discovery”. Oh well, that would be a weird choice for a first season storyline.

Well, they did go from 13 to 15 episodes, so perhaps the showrunners/network wanted a "quick win" episode and went back to the old reflecting pool.

I don't know if it's what they're doing, but I think it's possible to do both. For example, the TV show Burn Notice did that for most of its run. There was always a "case of the week", but some of the episode was also devoted to the overall arc (which was usually an arc that spanned most, if not all, of the season).
I'm not saying every episode should be story of the week + some time spent on the story arc, but it is possible to have at at least a few stand-alone stories intermixed with the arc.
Having said that, I'd rather one of the stand-alones NOT be the mirror universe. Granted, they are part of Trek, and always will be, but I find them a bit cheesy -- at least the way the mirror universe has been shown so far.

Though Discovery doesn't sound like a very Terran Empire sounding name.
