Forged in FIre Excerpt

I just wanted to let everyone now that there is a excerpt for Forged in Fire on the official Star Trek website. So far it's really good, and it has even included
a possible explanation for how Klingons got their ridges back.
:klingon:Qapla

ETA:
And an explanation for ridged Trill

Clever...
the reason for having Koloth "fixed" at this point is to explain why he had ridges in In the Name of Honor. But I guess this excerpt would have to take place before ST VI and "Flashback," given that Kang doesn't have ridges yet. And, of course, since Styles is still Excelsior's captain.

The Korvat colony negotiations mentioned in "Blood Oath" occurred in 2289, which is four years before the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and "Flashback." What I found interesting is that Sulu appears to be Styles' first officer, a mere two years after Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

Hmm... that was enjoyable, I'm a bit more interested now...

The Trill ridge thing was clever.

^Yeah, I honestly never even thought of that.
Is this the first that the ridged Trill have been mentioned since the introduction of spotted Trill?

I'm pretty sure it was brought up in Worlds of Deep Space Nine: Unjoined, but I could be wrong. Either that or Divided We Fall.

"Divided We Fall" featured
(in flashback) with a heavy shadow on his forehead, so it looked like he had ridges, but in later frames he was simply (inexplicably) spotted. But I really loved how the artist softened the blow with that very first depiction.

That excerpt was fantastic, but would you expect anything less from the authors of Cathedral, Rogue, Unjoined etc?

That was great. I've always liked Curzon Dax in the novels. I loved the reference to the Trill "keeping secrets" as well.

One question:

Are the Trill members of the Federation at this point? There's references to Earth and other UFP worlds being 'allies' of Trill. So it seems that Trill is not yet a member. But then why would a Trill be negotiating for a government he's not part of?

Also, I just had a funny idea about who should play Curzon at this point in his life. Linky

Ever since I saw "Facets" I've always pictured him as an un-Odoed Renee Anberjonois myself.

Starfleet accepts candidates who are not from Federation member worlds, if with a bit more bureaucratic wrangling. Why wouldn't the Federation Diplomatic Corps do the same? If anything, there are distinct advantages to having members of the species you want joining the Federation on your negociating team. (Also, why are we using spoilers? We all know Curzon was a diplomat.)

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Is there any kind of official word as to whether Trill is a member of the Federation?

Agreed, but this novel takes place when Curzon was much younger. He's over a hundred years old when he dies, and so I'm guessing he was born in or before TOS' time. Which would make him about Jamie's age during this book.

One more question:

What does the word 'HemQuch' literally translate as? The book gives that name to the ridged Klingon appearance, as opposed to the QuchHa' who are the human looking ones.

This looks awesome Andy! I've been waiting to read this for four years! Congratulations, it looks like it won't disappoint!

Also...

"one of Excelsior's officers, a young man who sported a small but bright red circular tattoo between his eyes"

...is this our young and troubled Lieutenant Lojur? I guess it's a bit early in the Excelsior's timeline to see many other crew from The Sundered but it's cool to see at least some familiar faces. =o)

Andy Mangles has also posted another excerpt on his site and I'm so glad to see Enterprise & Ds9 story continuity in these excerpts. I can't wait to get this book! here's the link for Andy's site http://www.andymangels.com

January can not come soon enough! A prequel to Blood Oath and a sequel to my favorite Enterprise episodes.

The Klingons really don't know what to do with their dirty laundry do they? But the Albino has certainly caused much trouble.

If you mean the first excerpt, that's the same as the one that was on Startrek.com
