Forbes: How ‘Star Trek’ Became Obsolete Thanks To ‘Guardians,’ Fast & Furious’ And ‘Star Wars’

Im sorry I've never read so much clap trap all my life!!!
I don't go to see a Star Trek film because I think its going to be like Star Wars or any other film for that mater, what utter nonsense
Star trek is entirely unique and individual phenomena that came out of the 1960s TV series and spanned the decades totally different heritage to star wars.

They handled the 50th anniversary badly thats the only reason.

Thought ST 2009 was fresh direction for franchise . Unfortunately JJ, Orch, N Kurtzman had no clue how to advance it after

Agree w Tower Bridge - ST is a unique phenomenon and the Bad Robot crew didn't understand it, IMO

Liked STID n Beyond but just not what I was personally hoping for n based on box office, most others too

Hopefully CBS pulls it together

I keep banging on about this but I wish Trek would go more like Interstellar, The Martian, Gravity, Prometheus, exploring space is wondrous and dangerous etc if they want to emulate something.

Have a United Earth movie following the XCV-330 around 2090 or 2110 or whatever as they go to Alpha Centauri, Bernarnds, fight in the Kzin-Earth Wars, Wolf-359, deal with early human colonies, something. Yea you might have to change the ENT background dates but...so what.... Hell shove in some Starfleet Museum designs in there.

They went were most fans would expect-to Khan,

They understood TOS perfectly. which isn't going to always appeal to those introduced via TNG and onward. Or to every fan either.

I was thinking of movies that intend to entertain, just tell a story.
In these days of ubiquitous home media options, movies need to be big budget spectacles that take advantage of being on a big screen in order to convince people it's worth going to the theatre now instead of waiting a few months when they can watch it on their own TV.

Eh, it really isn't. Star Trek's as generic as they come, and though it did exist before Star Wars, it was the success of Star Wars that played a huge part in the decision to revive Star Trek as a movie series in the late 70s.

Star Trek generic NOW WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Star trek owes about as much to Star Wars as Alien the only similarity being that they are set in space.
Totally unique and iconic is how I would describe it
We need a new film now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WITH CURRENT BRILLIANT CAST.

Ask most anyone their definition of generic science fiction, and they're going to tell you Star Trek. Some might say Star Wars, but that's because to their mind, Star Trek and Star Wars are the same thing.

The success of Star Wars is the whole reason TMP even got greenlit. Had Star Wars never happened, there would be no Star Trek movies, and without the movies, the rest of the franchise from TNG onward would look very different indeed.
We need a new film now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WITH CURRENT BRILLIANT CAST.
I imagine that's difficult now given many of them are either busy with other projects, and/or cost more than Paramount is willing to pay. Plus one of them is dead.

It was always to my understanding that STID took so long to get made mainly because there was the sentiment by producers that it should be done by Abrams. Because he was busy making SUPER 8, that meant it couldn't come any sooner than 2013. They could have easily just looked for other directors who were eager to take on Trek, but for whatever reason they waited for J.J. thus the original June 2012 date they aimed for was not possible.

That was a big mistake. They really should have let someone else who was hungry to take on the gig.

Star Trek works best on TV anyway, and is at the moment enjoying continuing success on TV.
I've posted about my dislike for JJ's films, the new cast and plots before so I'll not go into all that again, but the bottom line for me is that Discovery and Picard support the above statement.

Nope. Orci and Lindelöf have admitted in interviews it was because they spent an entire year not working on the script because they were arguing over whether they should use Khan in the movie or go with a new villain. Said interviews are available in the book The Fifty Year Mission Vol. 2.

IIRC, Abrams did Super 8 when he did because work had stalled on STID.

If that’s the case, that’s even worse. I know Abrams is kind of prone to creative indecision, I just didn’t realize his writing buddies had that problem too. No wonder the scripts come off so sloppy.

I thought Star Trek was Abrams' gig.

My understanding Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) was the new villain in Into Darkness and the writers were contemplating if Khan would be in it.

Abrams didn't want to commit to another Trek film until there was a script, and the writers took a long time to get work done. In that case, another director should have been hired thus they might have given a more clear direction to the writers on where to go with the story.

Yeah. It felt like a lot of miscommunication and that resulted in some frustration on Abrams part.

This is funny because usually when a script is assigned the writers have a deadline they have to meet. if you're WGA you can't do spec work like that, so you gotta be paid, and where payment comes in there be deadlines.
