Fond memories of Lost In Space.

The closest equivalent in Trek was the mechanism positioned between the helmsman (normally Sulu) and the navigator (eventually filled by Chekov). I don't think it was ever identified on screen, but Franz Joseph listed it as an astrogator in the StarFleet Technical Manual.

With the release of "The Motion Picture", that component finally got a transparent hemispheric cover.

Wait... "Astrogator"? Wasn't that the Gorn? :p

There was. That unit seemed to function like a plumb bob. One can see it varying in the wormhole sequence.

There was a picture of someone holding the prop sometime back on the BBS.
