Fleet construction

Re: post Dominion War

Post War phases:

1. Initially a period of refugees, refugee camps, and massive relief efforts. A time of political uncertainty. Society is absolutely focused on survival.

2. A period of Reconstruction. The situation is more or less stabilized, at least in domestic affairs. Society emphasizes rebuilding. :bolian:

As for new builds, I think these would be smaller craft. For rebuilding a small freighter might be useful, so I'm thinking of the Ju 'day/Federation raider/Maquis raider type. Two versions would be built. One would be civilian, and unarmed. Because this design can be useful as a smaller combatant, the Star Fleet version would be armed.

Build some more of the Defiant class. A proven design, if you must strengthen your defenses.

As for larger ships, I think that there would be a delay. The ship yards that can handle larger ships would be full of ships with battle damage. Next in priority would be old ships that can be refurbished. Then long delayed refits.

There's also the question of whether any shipyards took major damage, as we know the Dominion took Betazed for a while. Both FASA and Jackill suggest that some of the major manufacturing areas have as many as four or five drydocks, so I can see those being able to take heavy repair orders. But I think you're right about the war causing a delay in construction, and that Starfleet might pull older ships out of mothballs in the interim. :)

As for building more Defiants, I think there would be lingering fears regarding the Borg and Dominion. And tensions with the Typhon pact.

And due to their relatively small size, I think that these ships could be used as patrol vessels during peace time.

I have a vision of old hulls being held together with duct tape. That is, if the brass have watched Mythbusters. :rommie:

I had always wondered how Starfleet had gotten registries up to the 75,000+ range and then I saw how in DS9 each Runabout had it's own unique registry. If every utility vehicle and support craft in the Federation, excluding Starships compliment of Shuttlecraft, had their own registry, I could see a Starfleet with tens of thousands of ships, just not tens of thousands of Starships.

Just like cars have VIN numbers, as well as license plates.

I think Starfleet would want to build more traditional multirole vessels to help recoup some losses, though it's also possible they'd also want to build more tactical vessels to ensure they have something to fight with in the short term if they actually need it.

Nebula II class

I like the idea of piece-of-pie modules. I would combine this concept with mission pods on an aft section.

After watching TNG "The Battle" I got to thinking - Starfleet must have been hurting for ships to have kept an old heap like the Stargazer active.

The Raven was based on the Aerie class.

Note the different mission pods, which makes the Aerie type a multi-role vehicle.

I'm thinking that a Raven derivative, with different mission pods, could be a light weight multi-role/utility vehicle. And the relatively small size suggests that the craft could be produced more quickly than larger ships.

With a bolt on torpedo magazine/launcher, the craft could function in a manner similar to the PT boats of World War II.

Starfleet may have decommissioned the Stargazer after getting her back.

Oh, I meant before her disappearance.
She might have been considered a ship nearing the end of her service life at the time of the Battle of Maxia, but not quite ready for the breakers yet.
