Five years ...

I just realized that May 13, next Thursday, will mark 5 years since the final episode of Enterprise was broadcast. It doesn't feel like 5 years!

Sadly, most of my memories of that time aren't fond, at least in terms of being a fan of Enterprise and Star Trek in general. The basher vs. gusher wars got worse, the whole Save Enterprise thing was greeted with a mixture of blind enthusiasm and unwavering scorn, and I think 5 years later it's not unreasonable to pronounce These Are the Voyages the most controversial single episode of a science fiction program (and possibly of any genre) in TV history.

I think a lot of the bad blood that was unnecessarily created during the waning days of Enterprise is still out there. I certainly no longer identify myself as a Trekkie because I was then and remain disgusted at the OTT, unreasonable hatred that was spewed towards that show from the day the series was first announced until the last moments of TATV. (There's a line between criticism and hatred, and that line was crossed too many times to count, IMO, especially by certain individuals -- some of whom are still around and others who have faded away -- who seemed to have no life except to bash Enterprise and everyone involved in it.) I think it was also the point where the whole notion of "it's only a TV show" was lost on many, who started to use offensive terms like "blasphemy" when referring to the series, suggesting to me that Trek had dangerously become a religion to some, and then there was that whole Akiraprise nonsense where some people rejected the series based on a special effects shot in one of the TNG movies that lasted a couple of seconds and which simply indicated elements of the NX-01 design was later reused in the TNG era.

And this was also when "fanon" really kicked into high gear. My favorite "gotcha!" moment was when there were people complaining about T'Pol joining Starfleet, with people griping that it violated canon that said Spock was the first in Starfleet. And then someone went through all the TOS episodes and movies and said there was no such reference anywhere on screen.

For me, though, the epitome occurred when the first details of the episode "Regeneration" were revealed and we learned the Borg were going to appear. The episode, as you know, was a sequel to First Contact and unscored some of the timeline changes that had been caused by that film. It also helped to iron out some continuity burps regarding the Borg both in TNG and Voyager -- especially Voyager which established Starfleet was investigating the Borg years before Q gave Picard the preview. Anyway, either on TrekBBS or rec.arts.startrek someone posted that he was so outraged that the Borg were coming to Enterprise that he smashed his TV. Someone asked if he actually did that or was just BS'ing, and he said yes, he did actually do it. To the credit of other participants I believe recommendations of "get professional help" followed. But I sort of saw that as the moment some elements of Trek fandom went past the harmless "let's wear our uniforms to the movie" stage and into the "do I want to be in the same room with these people" stage.

It got so bad to be an Enterprise fan and supporter that I ended up quitting the TrekBBS for about 6 months at one point, and I abandoned rec.arts.startrek completely. I remember the old Moderator Actions board -- back when it was a "bitching board" -- often had people complaining about certain users who kept harping on Enterprise, and then some of the so-called "bashers" turned the tables by lodging complaints against guys like me who actually came up with good arguments in favor. I ended up going away and I didn't come back until some of the more militant "bashers" either gave up or got kicked out. And in fact the number of posts I've made on the Enterprise board here in the last 5 years, including this one, can probably be counted on one hand.

Some of those ripples continued to be felt when JJ Abrams brought Star Trek back, and a few people went back to their old tricks from the Enterprise days (while a few others stole said tricks for their own anti-AbramsTrek agendas) but fortunately unlike Enterprise the movie had the studio support and critical and box office clout that the naysayers were rendered irrelevant.

Still, with 5 years of reflection, I refuse to consider Enterprise a failure. Considering how many SF shows -- good and bad -- have been unable to survive a dozen episodes, never mind 4 seasons, the fact the series managed to survive 4 years is a victory. And the fact it's most likely going to be the first post-TOS series to hit Blu-Ray (owing to the fact TNG, DS9 and VOY have apparently been declared impossible to upconvert unless they redo everything) will probably place it in a good position to be reevaluated by people whose views weren't colored by hatred for Berman, Braga, and the others. 5 years is, after all, an eternity. Were mistakes made? Of course, but the sad part is included in the list of the mistakes were things like "breaking the status quo", "trying something new" -- they'd probably have been better off just doing another 4 years of Voyager.

Fortunately, also, I haven't really seen the same sort of virulent "basher vs. gusher" conflict with other SF shows. There's a bit of that on Doctor Who, as there are factions who are decidedly not in favor of how the revival turned out (but they have also been driven into irrelevance by the critical and public success of the series, which dates back to around the time Enterprise was exiting the airwaves). Certainly I often compare the fan reaction to the first season of Torchwood to how Trek fans responded to Enterprise. And occasionally a single product comes along that fires up people on both sides -- most recently Avatar. But none of this approached the overall unpleasantness of Trek fandom from 2001-2005. I hope we never see a repeat of what happened during the Enterprise era.

It is a shame that some people's worst nightmare isn't that the show they like goes off the air--it's that it continues to air but goes in a direction they don't like. There's a lot about the Doctor Who revival that I take with a grain of salt, but on the whole the world's a better place with the show on the air than not.

I may be in the minority, but I can't see getting that worked up about creative decisions made by people who I don't know, for a project that I don't have any kind of stake in, other than it entertains me (or not).

What replaced Enterprise in its timeslot? I'd ask the haters whether they really think it's a better show.

23skidoo, if you intend this thread to be a platform for attacking people (including members of this board) who have a different view of Enterprise than you do...not gonna happen.

I love Enterprise too, and I miss it, but those who do not care for the show have as much right to their opinion as folks who do like it, without being called names or disparaged. There's room in this great big beautiful universe for everyone's point of view. IDIC, and all.

Sharing favorite moments or good memories of the show might be a better way to mark the 5-year anniversary.

I found something to like about every episode of Enterprise, whether it be good character interaction, the nuances the actors brought to their roles, the compelling stories, or the wonderful production values. Some of the episodes are, IMHO, the best in all of Trek. I still wish there had been 3 more seasons-- I think they would have done some great stuff.

What replaced Enterprise in its timeslot?
As I recall, UPN aired re-runs of movies, which got lower ratings than Enterprise did. And the network went under about a year later, I think. A Pyrrhic victory at best. :sigh:

It's true that there's been a lot of hate for both ENT and Star Trek XI. And it goes both ways - lovers can hate you for hating it and haters can hate you for loving it.

I've experienced it both ways. I love ENT but loath Star Trek XI. I've had people jump down my thoart for praising ENT and people jump down my thoart for criticizing XI. When I first joined TrekBBS, I offered some complaints in the "Star Trek Movies XI+" forum about the movie and was villified for it. As a result, I avoid that forum now. It's been noticeably less acerbic in regards to ENT, but it's still there.

But you're right HopefulRomantic, we should mark this anniversity by talking about what we liked about the show. So, here's what I liked....

The characters:

Archer: I liked how he wasn't the type of captain we were used to. He wasn't a Kirk or Picard. He wasn't even a Sisko or Janeway. He was much, much more flawed. He wasn't a polished gem and had to do a lot of on-the-job learning. I also liked how that learning was something of a shock to his system of beliefs (as evidenced by his character arc in Season 3).

T'Pol: I liked how she also wasn't typical. She wasn't a Vulcan in the mold of Spock and Tuvok. She was willing to experiment with her emotions and question her society's deepest held beliefs. I also liked how they presented her drug addiction - in a non-judgmental way.

Trip: I liked how he was a much more "hands on" type of engineer. Whenever there was a problem he would get in there with a flashlight in his mouth, not just push a couple of buttons like LaForge or Torres would.

Phlox: He was what Neelix should have been. He was fun-loving, full of life, and eternally optimistic. However, he had all these things in moderation and wasn't so sickenly sweet as to require an insulin shot. He also had a serious side that didn't conflict with his care-free ways.

Sato: I loved how she was a fragile character, scared about space exploration and very nervous about her life aboard Enterprise. Almost never had we seen a character that was like this. All main characters are almost always super-confident and sure of themselves. The only exceptions I can think of are Barclay on TNG (and he wasn't a main character) and Ezri Dax on DS9 (and she was only a main character for the last season).

Reed and Mayweather: Okay, I can't say I really appreciated these characters. But I can't say that I disliked them either. Any flaws they have I would have to attribute to the writers simply not giving them things to do. The problems weren't with the characters themselves.

The Plot:

I have to say that I really didn't care for the plots in the first two seasons. Afterall, they had very little serialization, which I think is essential for a prequel series. They had more than the usual Trek seasons, but nowhere near the levels I would have liked. I loved the serialization of the final two seasons. The Xindi Arc was was ultimately a distraction from the prequel nature of the show, but it was a highly enjoyable distraction. The final season is what clinched it for me. When they finally embraced the concept of a prequel to TOS, the show took off in terms of quality. If they had been given an additional three seasons, I'm positive ENT would rate right up there with the very best of Trek in many more people's eyes.

The Production Values:

The show looks beautiful, IMO. Even the special effects in Season Four look better than most of the stuff we'd seen up until that point, despite the fact that the budget was severely cut that season.

So, were there flaws and mistakes in ENT? Of course there were. But, they're no where near as serious or deal-breaking as a lot of people make them out to be.

I never got to watch Enterprise when it was on other than a couple of episodes while on vacation in Florida. Those did not give me a good impression. About 3 years ago my local cable added SciFi and I got to see more. I liked it enough to buy all four seasons so I would have something to watch on the laptop while sitting with my sick dad. I watched it all in a two month span, then watched it again.

When I went to startrek.com I was shocked at the way fans were treated on the Enterprise forum. Anytime someone posted something positive they were immediately attacked by people with nothing to do but bash the show and anyone stupid enough to watch it. It was clear these people had no life but their agenda to drive away all fans. That may seem like a strong statement, but these people each had 30,000+ posts and that points towards an obsession of hate. I could not believe that the official Star Trek web site let so much bashing of fans continue. They could not be bothered to even assign a moderator for the forum. Eventually it was easier to just pull the plug.

I guess the positive side is leaving the official forum lead me to HOT and then on to TrekBBS. There is much more balance here. I still cannot help but cringe when HR makes a statement like "They have a right to their opinion." Not because they don't have the right to their opinion, because they do. No, I cringe because that brings flashbacks of the pirahna's from the official ST forum that were intent on driving all fans of the series away.

I didn't see any of this two years ago when I made it to VegasCon but I was shocked by one fan I met while in line for an autograph. A group of us were talking and one person said "If I ever meet Abrams I am going to punch him in the face for what he is doing to Trek." The movie was not even out yet. That was my only trip to a big convention. I learned that the messed up fans are not they ones wearing costumes. They are free spirits having fun and they added to the experience.

People need to realize that with 29 seasons (or 30 if you consider TAS as 2) and 11 movies you don't have to like everything. There is enough trek for everyone. Relax, enjoy what you like, and ignore the rest.

But anyway, back to Enterprise. I'm really glad I gave it a second chance. Those "beautiful people" they hired as a cast are better actors than I was first willing to give them credit for. I recommend purchasing the DVD's because watching it quickly and in order is the way to get maximum enjoyment. The development and interactions of the characters are more important in this series than any other, except maybe DS9.

seems like longer then 5 years enterprise went off the air.
I only got to see some of the episode on thier first run but when they came out on dvd i bought all four seasons purely because it was trek and there's not much to dislike about that far as I'm concerned.

could never understand the bashing it got while it was on air, no some episodestmay not have been liked by some people but then all the series had that yet the other series never got bashed like enterprise.

i think part of the problem with enterprise is that at the time they were churning out series after series too fast and I think people were getting bored with it. maybe they should have left enterprise and run it a year or so later.

but it was still fun to watch in any case

I started watching ENT a few months ago (Never aired here) and have to say that I like it. I have seen up to mid season 4, at least. Overall, it's good TV, with good plots and likeable characters.

It really is a shame we haven't had any new Trek since. I did watch Enterprise at the time of airing but haven't seen it since and have been subsequently re-watching the whole series and I've got to say it's refreshing to be watching a Trek series, almost as if for the first time. And sure, Enterprise has its flaws, but it's still Trek and I will continue to embrace it as such.

:techman:

When Enterprise was cancelled, I was sure it would follow in the footsteps of TOS -- try not to panic, TOS fans :) -- I just mean in the sense that Star Trek really began to gather a following after it went into syndication. Happily, ENT did the same when it was released on DVD -- Thank you, Netflix! -- and at last turned up on SciFi.

I'm sad that we didn't get a 7-year run, but I'm happy to have gotten what we did.
