First View of SOTL 2011 NX-01 Refit Diagram

How about the Enterprise images in TNG were displayed like a slideshow on one of out digital picture frames. We just happened to see the images of the moment. A few minutes later, they all changed. We just didn't see them.

Voila!

NX-01 missing from decorative collections isn't the problem. NX-01 isn't missing from those! We see the ship as part of the display of the E-E, for example. And as part of the display of the E-nil in the redone version of ST:TMP, too, for that matter.

The problem needn't even be that our heroes fail to mention NX-01 in dialogue despite her historical significance. They failed to mention the E-C despite her historical significance for the better part of TNG, and then continued to fail after mentioning her twice. They didn't talk about the E-A much, either - and never even mentioned the E-B.

Thankfully enough, the only continuity problem is that NX-01 was a Starfleet starship named Enterprise, and our heroes specified that no such beasts existed before Kirk's. (That, plus some continuity issues with Romulan cloaking devices...)

Excuse me? What are you talking about? The NX-01 isn't anywhere in TMP in any version I've seen.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything if it's not mentioned or seen in pictures or displays. For example, you see the space shuttle and the "ring enterprise" in both TMP and ENT but you don't see either in the Enterprise D display. Likewise the Ent D and NX Ent had the WWII carrier Enterprise but neither had the "Big E" in service today, and only one sailing Enterprise has ever been shown, although there were several.

Just to make this understood, everyone does know that when they created TOS, TAS, TMP, later movies with Refit Ent, Movies with Ent-A, TNG, TNG Movies, VOY and DS9 they had no idea they were going to make a backstory about the NX Enterprise, right?
You guys are arguing why we never saw the NX before ST Enterprise and why no one mentions it or makes it seem like the TOS Enterprise was the first or at least why it was the first famous E, it is simply because it never existed before then, so there was no possible way it would have been included before that point.
Look I hate the inconsistancies in trek and them having gone back and changed a bunch of stuff from the original but the fact is that they have been doing that since Star Trek moved from just TOS and become a franchise, there is no way around that.

As for the inconsistancies, it really isn't that hard if you think about it hard enough. For example, the original Enterprise wasn't made famous because it was the first of many Enterprise 1701s, it was made famous because of Kirk revolutionizing deep space exploration. And as I said before they don't show all of the Enterprises no matter how famous they are, not to meantion that you don't see every single room or even every wall of the rec room they may have pictures somewhere else.

It means plenty to me. It means in TMP they were saying there was nothing between the ringship and the TOS E.

Fie, I say! As far back as the pre-Voyage Home "Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise", that silly little alcove was said to be able to switch the pictures on command to show different things, videos, or that year's hockey playoffs. I find it easy enough to believe that it was a rotating display of "vessels named Enterprise" that included a bunch we haven't seen otherwise, and the overly large 1970s remote that Decker was playing with later could also change whatever was on the screens.

...And that there were no Enterprises before that sailing frigate?

...And that the nuclear carrier never existed?

You're damn right. There were only five things in all of human history named Enterprise, and the characters were standing in one of 'em. And the Heineken beer ad with Mr. Spock is the only other thing that's canon.

I'll cut to the chase and then say no more about it. I hate ENT with a passion and from day one I've thought it was one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever seen. From first hearing of its premise and concepts and then from the first episode I've seen it as nothing but a piss poor and blatantly obvious reboot and undermining of what came before.

Till my dying day I will never grant it any credit for anything nor will I ever acknowledge it in any manner whatsoever. It's garbage.

We know. This is not new information to most of us. And to be honest I understand why you feel this way. I might not agree but I do comprehend and... wait for it... respect your opinion. I welcome it actually. That diversity in viewpoints is what makes the human race interesting and keeps us viable as a species. But I also know that many people would rather force their opinions on others. It is human nature to categorize everything into something we can comprehend and understand. As a species we are sometimes very Borg-like in our need to convert others into our way of thinking. So trust me when I say it is okay to feel this way. I say this from experience. :bolian: Do you have any idea how often I get slammed for liking Enterprise? On several boards I thought I was going to be tared and feathered! I have also had more than a few people send emails telling me I should stop wasting my time on my NX deck plans and work on a "more worthy ship." (And I would be a liar if I said I didn't send something back telling them to mind their own damn business.) But just like you I feel the way I do and I can't help that. I have also stopped apologizing about it and I don't think you should have to either.

Oh and if we are cutting to the chase... I HATE "Voyager". I would rather be slowly flayed alive with a wooden spoon than watch it. That was not a jab at the Voyager fans. I am just stating how I personally feel. Remember kids, to each his own.

I like this explanation, actually. :D I think it might be wise to not get too involved in discussions over the quality of different series, and try to get this thread back on the original subject.

Agreed that whatever can be done to limit the inherent silliness of that alcove is warmly welcomed - quite regardless of the details of the artwork there.

I mean, that recreation room there is a vast, public space that offers very little privacy. Not very recreational as such, come to think of it. The five-image display is at the very center of attention, between the turboshafts on the biggest wall of the space. It's heavily framed and inset in two dimensions - you enter it by descending a few steps. It's a goddamn shrine! Dedicating it to the worshipping of five black-and-white pictures seems like criminal waste.

Multifunctionality and malleability would probably be the overriding feature of this recreation facility. If needed, one could arrange for team sports there, or have major public displays like Kirk's speech, then subdivide the space to more intimate playing areas or picnic spots or venues for art performances. The shrine should have multiple uses as well, then - perhaps including religious ceremony. Physically, it would remain a centerpiece no matter how the spaces were rearranged, so the varying uses might have to reflect that.

Showing the histories of various Enterprises would probably still be a good example of what that alcove does. Being inset that way gives the users some auditory and visual privacy - not enough to protect them from attention, but enough to allow them to enjoy an informational audiovisual representation. With five viewscreens in subdued lighting, and probably a good surround system for audio, yet with standing room only, the little "home theater" would probably best be suited for assorted short infomercials, perhaps mainly catering for the various visitors to the ship.

Hey! Easy there! I have one of those hanging in my house!

Very cool poster.:bolian:

It was also the only time we've seen the alcove. The ship was called into service before it was ready. The crew had lots of things to do beside making sure the rec deck was running the latest and greatest version of "A Short History of Ships Named Enterprise."

There could be many different programs it could display from "Presidents of the Federation" to "Great Vacation Spots on Non-M-Class Planets".

Timo - Just to build on this, check out this picture from Trekcore:

http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/tmphd/tmphd0555.jpg

and this picture:

http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/tmphd/tmphd1974.jpg

The first picture is obviously from the Briefing scene in TMP. The second is from the tour that Decker gives to the Ilia-probe.

Take a look just below the pictures. In the first, there are tags under the screens (the various Enterprise incarnations are clearly screens of some sort as they are backlit - okay, I know they could just be backlist for the sake of being backlit, but work with me). In the second picture there are no tags.

When my computer goes to rest mode, the screen shuts down. Perhaps that is what happens here. Once someone approaches and waves a hand, or what have you, in front of a sensor or some sort, the tags come back up. The person can then use the tag not as a tag, but as a selection key to pick which Enterprise he wants to see. IOW, it isn't a tag at all, but a control panel of some sort.

As for the black and white pictures, that may be the screens' static/hold mode. Once they are activated, the screens go to color (brought to you in living color by NBC!), have moving video/presentation, a voice over details the history of the ship, etc.

Just some food for thought.

^I prefer when they set it to "Miss Septembers through the years".

Miss Universe Contestants:
Miss Arrakis: A horned, blue humanoid with flippers.
Miss Perfect Little: Squat, black creature with tendrils, and many eyes and breasts.
Miss Vega 4: A giant purple paramecium, Miss Universe 3000's winner.
Miss Heaven: A green energy being.
Miss Pluto: A pink haired, blue humanoid.
Miss Demeanor: A turquoise, hoofed alien that bears antennae.
Miss Methane Planet: Halatina Smogmire, a footless alien consisting of purple methane gas.
Miss Earth's Moon: The Crushinator, an enormous pink robot that doubles as a car.
Miss Un-named Planet #2856-B: She is green, with orange hair and a trumpet for a nose. Zapp Brannigan apparently likes her.
