First Time Viewing

Favorite characters among those who were around for the premiere: Kira, Dukat and Garak (was Garak in the premiere?)
Garak didn't show up until the third episode, but then he went on hiatus until season 2. He's such a phenomenal character that I can't believe he was in so few episodes!

Oh I can't believe I didn't say Garak was my favorite! He totally is. I love how completely gray he is. I'm half way through season 5 and I don't know if he's really to be trusted or not (I think not). That quote about "especially the lies", is the best thing ever

I would say Garak is definitely one of my top favourites as well - the mischievous glint in his eye is just so compelling. It took me a while to warm up to Kira, I prefered Dax but as the series goes on, I find Dax isn't growing as much as Kira - or displaying the amazing emotional range either.
Other people have commented on Sisko's stilted manner of speech - but once you get used to it, it can be very effective.
and poor Odo, I just want to be his friend - he is just heartrendingly lonely at times... oh hell, I like all the characters - which is remarkable for an ensemble cast. I'm almost done series 5 now.

I just watched The Darkness and the Light, super good! I kind of hated Kira when it started, she just seemed so one dimension and angry. Thankfully by the time I noticed this year that she wasn't there I realized that I actually missed her being there.

I like Sisko's speach. Although its probably the one complain I have about DS9 now, lacking awesome Picard-esque speaches. Even Kirk gave them :(

I am coicdentially doing the same, albeit picking and choosing select episodes from all the seasons. I find I've done this more often with DS9 than with TNG.

As for the ep "Darkness and the Light", what a shame for Kira's friends.

I thought about doing that but I've read on here a few people say you get a lot more out of it watching them in order. So far I'd agree, but I think you'd be ok just picking and choosing. There are definitely a few I'll never rewatch

Yeah that was a good episode for sure

Oh yeah, I agree. If this is your first time watching it, then go in order. I did that with both DS9 and TNG. It then makes you appreciate all the really good eps compared to the ones that you will never rewatch haha. Sounds like you already know what I am talking about.

What was that season 1 or season 2 ep, the one where they are hop scotching and playing a kids game stuck in a maze? :wtf:

Long speeches are definitely in short supply.

Sisko is more of an "action man" than a "speech man"

But this is one of the strengths of DS9. The characters are so rich, they can convey emotions and make their feelings known without long speeches.

Also, many times Picard's speeches were about morality, doing the right thing, etc. On DS9, there was a lot more gray area on these subjects.

Going back to the question you asked at the beginning of the thread, I would probably say season seven is my favorite. The last 10 or so episodes are one long and fantastic arc. When I recently watched this show I planned to watch these last ten episodes over the course of one week, but I ended up watching them all within three days because I couldn't stand not knowing what would happen next. DS9 had a way of making you always want to come back for more, with the exception of the first season which, compared to the later seasons, was kind of drab.

Sixth season for me. Firing on all thrusters.

Good to hear!

I'm half way through season 5 now and its really good. A couple clunkers but even those weren't awful. It seems like a "bad" season 5 is still a 6 or so. And a couple real killer episodes so far

Jake and Bashir doing A Farewell to Arms was brilliant

Just finished Call to Arms and so Season 5. AMAZING

What a show. I was literally on the edge of my seat. I can't believe the build up. It was totally worth the hype leading up to this. I can't wait to see how Sisko gets the station back. I really feel its a damn near perfect show. Its a huge battle with a massive number of ships and special effects and yet its totally about Sisko vs. Dukat all at the same time

You can just keep your posts in this thread. People, for the most part, are pretty good about not posting spoilers if they know this is your first time through the show.

Thanks RoJo. This is true. If you want to post in this thread, people shouldn't spoil you. That way you can discuss episodes you are watching (people love to respond to n00bs as they are always so enthuiastic!) with minimal exposure to spoilers. :) Although now you have seen a good chunk of the show, so you can probably read thread titles and participate in many more threads.

As for me, my season ranking (from favorite to least favorite):

6
7
5
4
3
2
1

I think you will find that a lot of veteran Niners prefer the latter seasons, for reasons I won't get into for fear of spoilers. ;)

Thanks PKTrekGirl. I am really enjoying it and although I want to go to the forums I want to steer clear. I like going into episodes without any ideas of what's ahead. I know for example some of what's going to happen to Dax but I don't know the details. Even the headers are spoiler-y sometimes

To the OP: just re-edit the thread title with a "no spoilers please" entreaty and post your thoughts on the show in this thread. We'd all love to hear what you think and envy you your first take on DS9.
