Yet another indication that this is being done as a part of "existing canon" rather than something very different....
What kills me about this point, tho', is the talk of the ship being made to look different, and yet they insist they're holding to existing canon.
If they change the look of the communicators, the phasers, the uniforms, the bridge, the ship's corridors or make any obvious (even if slight) changes to the Enterprise's appearance...
Then isn't this VIOLATING canon, and declaring this "something else"?
Well, about the ship being made to look different... who's been saying that?
I've heard it from various "friends of friends" on the net, but I haven't heard it from anyone ACTUALLY INVOLVED IN MAKING THE MOVIE. Have you?
Every bit about the Enterprise being made to look different has come from someone unassociated with the film, as far as I know. In many cases from the same folks who kept insisting that "they will NOT keep the original Spock haircut because it's so dated. Just accept it."
I never did accept that, and I don't accept the "whole new ship design" claims either, because I've yet to see ANYTHING but wishful thinking posts from folks who want to see a "new and kewler" design.
The fact that Quinto is wearing a costume that is, stylistically, VERY similar to the costume worn by Mark Lenard in "Babel" was a very pleasant surprise to me. C'mon... if they're bothering to get the COSTUME DETAILS that consistent, not with ALL Trek lore but SPECIFICALLY WITH TOS TREK LORE... I find it... "less than likely" that we'll see random ship redesigns, too.
Regarding the "redesigned ship" argument:
1) It hasn't come from the folks in a position to know
2) The most that they've said is that the ship isn't EXACTLY what we've seen before... which COULD just mean that it's got additional fine "polish" but is an unchanged DESIGN.
3) We've seen internet rumor-mongering from various sources that have been supported by EXACTLY NOTHING.
4) It is very likely that other ships besides Enterprise will be seen in this film.
SO... maybe the rumors are correct. Or maybe they're total fabrications. Or maybe they're misinformed... made based upon someone seeing "a ship design" (not the Enterprise at all...) and assuming, incorrectly, that it's the "redesigned Enterprise."
So far we have NO reason to conclude that the 1701 will look any different from what we already know. Except for the wild-eyed rantings of people who keep claiming that "the original design is just 'so 60s' and thus must be DESTROYED!!!!!!!" and replaced by something "new and kewl."
