First Season 2 Images Arrive

Mr. Hengist is from Rigel IV. Lots of people are. It's not a crime.
One could imagine that he wasn't born there, but moved there at some point in his life and stayed long enough to be considered "from there".

Regarding the Saurian - is it preferable for Star Trek to update established races, e.g. Klingons, romulans, andorians, saurians, etc.

Or to invent new races:
Bolians, ferengi, suliban, denobulans, etc.

I’ll be honest I’m not excited about the new saurian - I’d actually have preferred a denobulan - just to contradict their total lack of visibility everywhere else - but I hope that they do something interesting with this character.

To be 100% honest, I'd have had no idea the Saurian in DSC was part of a race seen in TMP unless it was brought up here. If I didn't post here, I never would've known. Me -- of all people -- would've thought it was just some new race and it wouldn't have registered as even a blip on my radar. I heard of them (Saurian Brandy) but I had no clue what they looked like. I've been out-Trekkied.

It's too easy for people around here to get too caught up in the weeds sometimes.

Westworld did a great job of developing multiple characters and their motivations in the ten episode first season.

And DSC did a nice job of the same. Just not the background extras who happened to have names and make up.

:techman:

EDIT: and, in fairness, Westworld committed 15 mins more per episode on average to do just that.

I make this comment for the purpose of debate only and not to slag off DSC - but I think Westworld did a better job in this regard.

It really did. At least from my perspective, they didn't waste a minute of time messing around.
I think WW had the story figured out further in advance too. They seemed to know what they were going to do and worked much harder to keep the audience guessing right up until the end. I think many would agree that DSC had some story issues - regardless of how people feel about the show overall, the story seems to be a common complaint.

Agreed, but Westworld committed the time, nearly 15 mins more per episode. I wish DSC would do the same.
Fair point. I agree with you there - maybe the resolution of the Klingon war wouldn’t have seemed so rushed. I would also have preferred a smaller, cleverer solution - or a standoff - something like the Cuban missile crisis but in space. I know that historical event was trying to avert a war (and mercifully did) but something like that in DSC where our heroes use diplomacy in trying to avert the Klingons using a death ray or something would have been nice.
^ which is what they tried to do - but it was crammed in to the last, what? Ten minutes of the episode (if that?) but we had plenty of time to see Georgiou get jiggy with the Orion slave girls and guy. Giggety.

Maybe the writers will have more time and freedom to dedicate themselves to more complex storytelling in s2. Maybe this saurian will be the key to not reigniting the war with the Klingons and he will unwittingly draw the attention of the as yet unseen organians...

On the episode that ran 37 minutes, they should've shot a Meanwhile In the Prime Universe sequence with Captain Killy. Missed opportunity.

I think the run time issue is hamstrung by the fact that it is a broadcast show in some countries (SPACE in Canada, for example??). So, even though it's streaming on CBSAA and Netflix, they still need to outfit it for commercial television broadcast, which completely defeats all the advantages of doing a streaming show with regard to run-time.

I think of Man in the High Castle (which BillJ had mentioned weeks ago, and caused me to go check out)...and those episodes all run just around the one-hour mark...and they feel like little mini movies. I wish they'd do this with DSC on the streaming platforms, and edit them for broadcast if necessary.

If you think about it...15 mins more per DSC episode is 225 more mins over the course of the entire season. That's the equivalent of 3.75 additional episodes if they are an hour long, and frigging 5 additional episodes at the 45 min average they were running in S1.

That's a LOT of space to flesh out details and make the stories and characters more intelligent.

What’s the alternative on a shorter run time? For s2 I mean?

What if they just seriously stripped back the story and, say, only focused on Michael?

TOS used to have a 51-minute running time with three or four minutes cut out of the syndicated version. I think they should've had two cuts of Disco. The Regular Version and the Extended Version.

Lord of the Rings and The Godfather had all kinds of extra footage.

I didn't think the Enterprise could be more colourful than it was in TOS! But here we are. I'm totally looking forward to this season!

From what I've seen, they're about the same when it comes to color. It's just in different spots.

I just had a horrible thought that you can blame on my '80s childhood: Linus looks like he'd be right at home on Thundercats.

Not a dig at the make-up at all because that used to be one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. Can anyone else see it?
