Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

The handle being the trigger I get, but twirling the nozzle around to go from stun to kill? It's kind of an odd '30s sci-fi serial-ish throwback in a movie that's about taking an old sci-fi show into the 21st Century.

Did they do that a lot in the 1930s?

Anyway, a ray gun is a ray gun. Phasers are ray guns. This is a pretty cool ray gun.

I thought the whole point of all these redesigns was to make Trek look like it evolved from today's technology. The new Enterprise, tricorders that look like Crackberries, communicators that look like iPhones, a bridge that looks like the Apple Store, uniforms that don't look like velour. The phaser looks like a prop from one of the original Flash Gordon serials that hasn't been polished in a few decades.

Looks infinitely better than the toy. In fact, I don't hate it. Still prefer the original, though.

I've yet to see anything in this film resemble anything on your list.

Is this phaser for lefties AND righties?

Being a lefty, this question also crossed my mind when looking at the pic.

If you say so. It's better looking than the phasers they've been using.

Yay, ray guns.

As big a fan of TNG that I am, I was starting to
find the handheld vacuum cleaner design a little old.

This is just fun again.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

All I've seen thus far--including the Enterprise herself, which I like considerably less than this phaser, btw--makes me think "Y'know, this is a design direction I sorta wish they'd taken back in 1987, with TNG." I still wish, however, that they'd opted to stay as true to the original designs as possible while increasing the detail and the apparent quality. But I get the felling that, once I see the movie, that will be at the very bottom of my wish (they'd only done...) list.

Interesting point about the tentacles, though. However, I don't see how dust busters were much more ergonomically friendly to non-humanoids than the Type IIs.

Probably why I don't hate it. In a former life, I posted extensively on this board that ENT should have used pulp SF and serials--even Jules Verne--for inspiration.

Well, it's definately better looking than the Enterprise, but it looks a little front heavy to me, and I personally don't like shiny handguns. It certainly could have been a lot worse.

Oh jeez, that would have been so cool. Damnit, I liked ENT before this post.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Looks a little more serious now.

Although the rotating emitter and the red emitter look kinda...crap.

Make the red emitter a dark black and we're in definite business.

That's a good point about shiny--the old phaser could easily be rendered so that it appears to made of metal that has been painted black and maybe even gray ceramic. The old shiny bits could have been weathered like this pisotol and the clear emitter...actually, I dig the clear emitter.

Still, coulda been a lot worse, as the new Enterprise and bridge attest--imao, of course.

Definitely reminds me of a nickel-plated .45. It'd have been nicer if they went with black finish, like a USP or Sig Sauer. Still metal, but not shiny like something Sonny Crockett or Agent 47 would wield.

Eh, everything in base colors gets bland.

It's a Phaser, it shoots "lasers", it should be colored and distinguished.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

hmm tough to say if it's the real deal... but a nice thign to have anyway.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Ah, I like it. Does anyone know if Master Replicas got the prop liscence for this gig or are we stuck with just the Playmates stuff?

Considering the problems MR has had with quality control and their factories in China as of late (the one making the Mark X tricorders walked off the job and so far, the company hasn't been able to line up a replacement), I wouldn't hold your breath.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Well, my thought is that to us, having it be flashy and 'cool' is more because we're a little in awe over such technology.

Wouldn't they be used to them and just be looking to design an effective efficient weapon? I question if the rotating emitter is effective or efficient.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

I like it. My favorite phaser is still the smaller, shaver-box phaser one with the pop-up target sight and the trigger on the bottom. But that's more out of fondness for TOS. My second favorite is the hardcore phaser from V and VI, and this one has elements from that one and looks like it has weight to it.

Re: Fisrt photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Looks good, like a sleeker TOS phaser.

If I could change anything about it, I would loose the red barrel tip and give it a black finish to look more like a military weapon as opposed to a shiney display-case gun. I still like the TFF/TUC phasers the best, since they were the only phasers that actually looked like weapons rather than a glue-gun(TOS) or dustbuster(TNG).

But that's just me. This is an above-average phaser design.

I guess for me it just doesn't look "chromey" it looks like stainless steel.

Looks tough and durable. I don't think I'd like it in black.
In black it just looks like any other modern day gun.
