Iron Man ought to be able to cross the $300M mark before too terribly long.

Agreed any time now.

BTW: The movie 21 is coming out next week on DVD? Speed Racer is already at the 2nd run theater. Didn't these movies come out 2 1/2 to 3 months ago. WOW! Speed Racer must have fallen, fast!

I'll Netflix 21, I've been waiting for it as I could see it was likely good but just renter good.

As for Speed Racer it placed at #27 on the chart this past weekend in its 10th week in release. Its only made $43.5m to date on a $120m budget. It's also a flop in the WW market. Its WW total is a mere $85.7m!

The other May release movies to be near the top are Indy 4 at #11 and Sex and the City at #12 and Iron Man at #14. Really good holds on all 3 films.
Poor Prince Caspian down at #20 with $139m on a $200m budget. It's overseas numbers help it out big time though.

http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.c...-midnight-shows-broke-star-wars-sith-numbers/

FRIDAY 7AM: Warner Bros is well on its way to making Hollywood history this weekend. That's because its opening comic book caper The Dark Knight is already on its way to breaking records left and right today even as it's still sparking a ticket-selling frenzy across North America. I've just been told that the latest Batman installment's midnight shows broke the record of $16 million set by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. "Over $17 million, and still counting," my insider says this morning. I should have final midnight numbers by 9:30AM. Across North America, theater owners are working feverishly to squeeze in more screenings to meet voracious moviegoer demand.

As I type this, it is a minute or two before 11:00AM CST, July 18, 2008. I thought for certain that The Dark Knight would have made $300M by now ;)

I think the question(s) now are
  • How much can it make in its OW?
  • Will it be frontloaded and drop off?
  • How fast can it get to $200m then $300m?
  • The answer to the last question will tell us its legs to challenge Indy & IM to lead the summer and/or year.

As a highly anticipated sequel its box office pattern will obviously be very different from Batman Begins - it'll have a much bigger opening and a more frontloaded run. But the opening weekend alone may give us a very good idea of whether it's likely to take the domestic box office crown. If it opens to $130 million or more then it's likely got the domestic crown in the bag.

Deadline Hollywood is saying that a Warners source has passed along news that The Dark Knight is on track to make more than $60 million on Friday. Fantasy Moguls pegs the number at an early estimate of $63 million. If that's correct it would best the current record for the biggest single day gross of $59.8 million held by Spider-Man 3.

Warner Bros sources are telling Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood that they estimate The Dark Knight will have a weekend take of $155.3 million, setting a new opening weekend record.

I still believe that the tone of the film and the running time (over 150 minutes) will keep The Dark Knight from setting any new box office records.

I guess box-office fortune-telling isn't my strong suit.

Don't sweat it, Bad Bishop. Before the buzz about the huge pre-sales started building I had thought the darkness of the film would somewhat limit its box office and keep it in the $250-275 million range. Now, with this opening, it's assured of taking the domestic box office crown since even if it's frontloaded it should land at least in the mid-300s, and if it has good legs it could well end up in the high 300s or even over 400.

A couple of things to note: this is the fourth Batman film to set a new opening weekend record. Batman, Batman Returns, and Batman Forever all set new records when they opened in 1989, 1992, and 1995 respectively. Also, The Dark Knight will have the highest domestic gross, in unadjusted terms, in Warner Bros history.

Box Office Mojo has their weekend estimates up. Some quick takes of some of the other films we've been following:

* Hancock came in at #3 with $14 million (- 56.4%) for a total so far of $191.5 million.

* Journey to the Centre of the Earth held up pretty well, dropping 43.3% to come in at #4 with $11.9 million for a total so far of $43 million.

* Hellboy II unfortunately took a big tumble in the face of the The Dark Knight. It dropped a whopping 70.9% to take $10 million in the #5 slot, for a total so far of $56.4 million. A second weekend drop this big means that it surely won't reach $100 million domestic.

* Wall*E came in at #6 with $9.8 million (- 47.8%) for a total so far of $182.4 million.

* Wanted came in at #8 with $5.097 million (- 57.5%) for a total so far of $123.3 million.

* The Incredible Hulk dropped a massive 73.2% to take in $623,000 for a total so far of $131.7 million. It still hasn't matched the domestic take of Ang Lee's Hulk.

So, The Dark Knight will become the highest-grossing film of the year? That's what it looks like. I mean I figured the film would do good, but this is just outstanding. It's also such a huge improvement over Batman Begins in terms of gross.

Does this mean that audiences aren't afraid to embrace dark films? Or was it the buzz surrounding the film that helped push it over the edge?

With this opening it seems poised to now be the #1 film of the summer if not year. USAToday noted that unfortunately Ledgers death is a factor, despite our thread here saying otherwise. Media outlets recognize this as a factor. The hype on his last role and it being so damned good draws those who don't want to be left out.

I also think that due to the unfair advantage of having 3&6am showings that not other film had it was destined to set records. Spidey3 and PotC didn't have those showings and PotC was just as long a film.

It'll curious to see the long term word of mouth. I heard elevator talk this morning from granted 2 people who weren't overly blown away. Stating Begins was better. Are they an anomoly or will that thought be more widespread? It'll still do well I'm just now curious about frontloadedness and WOM.

Surprised but really pleased. I've been avoiding all news on TDK like the plague for a while, was impressed with Begins but didn't think Nolan would absolutely blow it away with the sequel, I'm glad to see it did so darn well. Not too worried about HBII, at least internationally, there seems to be a fair deal of excitement about the movie (at least judging from the trailer that played before TDK here).

Now lets get that Superman sequel fasttracked.
