First looks at Jason Momoa as Conan...

I initially expected this movie to be awful but the more I've seen of it, the more impressed I've been. Much to my surprise Momoa looks to be pretty impressive in the lead - he definitely looks the part and there seems to be more acting going on than with Arnold. It's unlikely to give any of the big movies a run for their money this year, but it could well be a dark horse sleeper hit. Worth a rental anyway, me thinks.

That's whatchacall your damning with faint praise. :D

Momoa isn't a great actor, but he's likable and who's to say that he isn't exactly what a Cimmerian is supposed to look like?

Count me as those whose interest is up cause Ron Pearlman is also involved.

If only they'd cast Katey Sagal as Conan's mom. Yikes! No wonder their kid conquers the whole world. :rommie:

The trailer looks like this could be fun. Mamoa seems to play the role well, the cuts were so frenetic that it's hard to get a good feel though. He looks good as Conan, if a bit too handsome for the role. I do give props for the make up with facial scaring and a somewhat more sullen look which Conan should have.

I think some of that scarring on Momoa's face is actually real. IIRC he got into a bar fight a couple years back and took a glass bottle to the face.

Arnold's Conan was schlocky even in its time. This one looks like it could actually be some decent fun.

Nope. Momoa's actually much closer to Howard's Conan than Arnold was. Arnold was too slow and bulky.

As a pre-existing Conan fan, I never really though of Ah-nold as the definitive Conan, or even particularly right for the part. I agree, Momoa is closer, someone more panther-like. Can't think of a current actor who would be totally right for the part.

Interesting that they're using the "sword" logo for Conan (nice animation at the end). Did that originate in the comics? Here's a cover from 1985. Scroll down a bit.

While you can't tell much about the story from the trailer, the look of the movie is a lot better than I was expecting. I hope it's good.

I'm pretty sure that logo came with Arnold's movie. Through the 70's the title graphics were like this

at the end more like this

The one you referenced is from the second film, if I'm not mistaken. The comic adaptations used the movie logo.

Reeve is Superman, Shatner is Kirk, Connery is Bond, and Arnold is Conan. Everything else is just poor imitation.

He might have made the character more popular, but that doesn't mean he portrayed the character properly.
