First Look - The Destiny

We'll see. To me, it mostly looks like the Excalibur from "Crusade" with the top sail ripped off. I do like it fromt he three wavy shots we see, though.

One wonders on the size. Smaller than Atlantis, but bigger than a Daedalus-class starship. 1000m?

Dull, boring rubbish.

Same old, same old. Horrible box-like design that's totally non-memorable with lots of small boxes and turrets on the hull. The exact same thing we've been getting for years zzzzzzzzzzzzzz - and yes, it looks Cardassian.

The observation deck completely ripped off from Sunshine.

Starships like the Enterprise are things of beauty that make you fall in love with the design and the ship itself.

I believe the boxyness of the Stargate ships is that thing called REALISM!

Boxyness = realism? :wtf:

Earth ships, maybe. But Ancient ships? Massive cylinders with greebles and boxes all over the hull? Lazy and totally uninspired.

In your opinion...

Yes because this is a forum where people go to express their opinions. Saying "In your opinion" or "in my opinion" is just stupid.

Looks cardassianish to me. Can't say I like it very much from the tiny blurry image I can see. I like the interiors they've shown (in photos and design sketches) a lot more.

Are those interiors posted anywhere? Link? :)
You'll find some photos here at Joe Mallozzi's blog, and beware of storyline spoilers in the text.

Kpnuts is a well-known basher/hater. His pronunciementos need to be challenged in this way on a regular basis.

No you're right. Ancient warships are clearly complex, stunning pieces of design, with so much thought being put into how it looks. It is not at all just a big cylinder in space, covered in a mess of boxes, greebles and antennae... it's a well thought-out and non-lazy design that ranks up there as the best in terms of sci-fi ships...

Looks just fine to me. Not every sci-fi universe has to follow the design rule of "form over function"...

Personally, I think it's the ugliest ship I've seen in any science fiction, but there you go.

My original point was that the design was lazy and uninspired. Choosing to add lots of surface detail and greebles, (which take all of 20 seconds to think up and implement) rather than think about it from a design aesthetic and try something a bit different.

I mean who designed that garbage Ancient warship seen above? It's godawful

Does this mean we get free reign to pick apart the plethora of design flaws in the Kelvin, too? :)

Design aesthetic is a painfully subjective thing. What works for one person is definitely not going to work for everyone. Obviously, what worked for the production designer here isn't going to work for you.

The Kelvin is a gorgeous starship, with beautiful clean lines. Yes it might not be to everyones taste, but design wise, it has one.

The Ancient warships look like they were designed in 10 minutes. A big grey ugly tube, with lots of bumps and greebles to make it look advanced.

It's a total mess, and I can't see anyone looking at that ship and being wowed by it. It's just fugly.

The inside of the Destiny is horrible, it looks like Atlantis but in need of a paint job. Isn't the ship millions of years older than Atlantis? I don't get it.

I gotta agree with Kpnuts here... All ancient starship designs so far in Stargate have been atrocious, looking no different in tech level than Earth ships.

This is from the episode Aurora, the first appearance of this class of ship. It was noted by the characters to have been severely battered from instense combat. The design was altered for the later episodes, and looks a little bit better than this.

Twenty seconds to think up, perhaps. Twenty seconds to implement? Not on your life. :guffaw:

The Kelvin may look pretty, but that's about all that's there. But that's a textbook example of all looks and no substance. Let's put all of the pieces that we really need to make sure the ship keeps going right out in plain sight, shall we? One good hit, and the ship's crippled, if it even survives.

Come on, just because we were indoctrinated into the TOS era ships allegedly being "gorgeous", they were nothing more than artistic wank in space. The practical applications are virtually nil.

A design that requires more than simple visual to target is far more practical and has far more of a capacity to sneak up on someone, wouldn't it? I mean, if you looked at this ship here, wouldn't you think it was just a cargo ship? All of those boxes can easily camouflage weapons, sublight engines, torpedo bays, multiple backup helms. It's camouflaged without needing a cloaking device.

Whereas, the Kelvin? It's screwed from the get-go. Obvious engine. Obvious weaponry. Obvious everything. A Pakled would know where to shoot the ship just on sight. That's a standard flaw in 23rd Century Federation ship design.

The Ancients never really did have an eye for aesthetics though did they, I mean there is history in the show to show they have a bad eye for design when it comes to ships. Their puddle jumpers are some of the most ugliest things I've ever seen. Even Atlantis is kinda odd. Their design of the gates and DHDs and Head Sucker things are cool, but their ships have never been cool, definitely nothing like the Asgard design sense. I just take that as that is the way they are in regards to their ships. Of course this was never said on screen, but I like to think they got their idea for flying cities from the Nox anyway.

Don't be pedantic, of course I wasn't speaking literally when I said 20 seconds to implement.

In other words, whichever designer who worked on them didn't do a very good job.

lol don't mind her. it's her job here to do that. >_< she's like the dr. smith in our jupiter one. out baltar.

Nope. It means you didn't like what they designed, end of story. I mean, it looks like all you like are ships with smooth surfaces or something. That's cool, but to say only ships with smooth surfaces are the results of good design work is ridiculous.

I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that I'm just the opposite. The more "bumps" there are on a ship, the more I like them. LOL. It makes them feel complicated, and big. I don't like smooth ships because they remind me of plastic toys that come with kid's meals.

I like the Stargate ships; they're either weird looking, or they are based off of something unique to the culture the ship is from. The Goa'uld have their pyramids, the Ori's ship looks like their symbol, the Asgard uses thor's hammer as the basic shape for their ships, and now the Destiny is the shape of a chevron.

And then you get some weird shit like the Replicator cylinder thing. That was just odd, but unique.

I also like how some ships, like the Daedalus and the Aurora classes aren't symmetrical.
